I am a Brit who has lived in the USA for 50 years, although I am a devout atheist I have fond memories of the Church of England.
Unlike Americans the British just don’t take religion SERIOUSLY, they regard religious devotion as sort of like a chore, washing up for instance, no one likes doing it but it is better done than leaving the dishes dirty.
As I child I remember our local C of E church very well, St.Thomas’s, the vicar was a wonderful warm, friendly, cultured, Oxford educated Scotsman who everyone adored. His wife was the same a lovely lady who, at the summer garden parties held at the vicarage would join in all the activities and also be up to her elbows in suds as we all did the washing up.
There were no gloomy lectures on religious dogma, no THREATS of eternal damnation if you missed communion, no confessions.
I was named after the Reverend Keith Murray.
He was sadly PROMOTED TO CANNON and moved away, my mother cried. His replacement was a dour, quiet batchelor who was no match for the charming, convivial Keith Murray.
In spite of my atheism I still have a warm spot in my heart for the C of E, or perhaps that warm spot is for the people more than the church.

Richard Curtis obviously didn't do any research. New Vicars are interviewed by the local church council before they get the position of local vicar, so David Horton would have known who the new vicar was before she arrived.
