Interesting fact: Patrice was called in last moment for the Roast. Was still writing material on the flight. Then got up there and just went off the cuff.

That was literally most of his career. He was to comedy what Eminem was to rap 15-20 years ago. He could just get up on stage and just say shit without any preparation and still be better than 99% of his peers. Dude was a once-in-a-lifetime talent and he deserved much more then he achieved even with his constant Bridge burning. The saddest thing to me it's him finally realizing how self-sabotaging he was and finally truly trying just as it was too late for the diabetes to take over.

And who's fault is it? He knew since around since he was 21 or 23 years old. Even a decade later he still had time to change his habits to be at least 60. He later said he didn't care enough about staying alive. He tried to change and watched what he ate but too little too late. He had to make the decision himself and nobody could tell him what to do so another big one gone.
The closest 'big' one to make it was John Pinette. He had surgery and lost a lot of weight but didn't take enough time to recuperate doing stand up and theater on stage and he died. Ralphie just increased in weight till he was gone.

The sad reality of this world is you can be the most good looking, smart, talented, etc. person in the world and have the whole world brimming at your potential and yet disappear into nothingness if you're unwilling to adhere to the constantly evolving and changing climate of society.
I dunno. It's unfair, really. Then again, maybe this is what keeps the balance. The fact that there are people who, though not as gifted, get the fame and power because they play the game and get to sit at the table.

This is actually his greatest moment and it's such a fantastic thing to leave as his legacy before dying. He didn't even have time to write jokes before he got the call to get on a plane and join at the last minute. He wrote most of the jokes on the way there which is why he was holding his papers with his jokes and scrolling through.
He disregarded most of his material because it no longer fit and he instead was just honest with everyone and it was the funniest set all night. And that's exactly how it should have went, because that's what he was best known for: of-the-cuff humor. It was literally the best thing that could have happened for the show that night and his legacy.

He discussed the post-roast briefly on a podcast, can't remember whose it was, but basically said Patrice & he truly had never met before, always seemed to be booked a day off from the other, and so they had never even casually spoken back in the green room or anything, and he and patrice happened to end up being on the same elevator up to their respective suites and he said he remembers saying it was an honor to be on the dais with a legend like him, and Patrice nodded and chuckled and told him that "too few black people" line was ruthless, and that he wasn't expecting it, especially since Anthony's "Tyson-Richard Pryor album joke" didn't land.
Anthony told him he'd been waiting to say that exact line to SOMEBODY Black for years but had always forgotten it and then it was too late when he would remember it a couple of minutes later, and so they both laughed and said our best lines tonight happened to be improv rather than written material, and so they went their separate ways, and not even seven days later, Patrice was dead. Anthony looked down and sighed and told the podcast host he regretted going to bed early that evening instead of having some drinks and shooting the sh!t with O'Neal. #Rip

Hes number one imo. the greatest comedian ever in my book . In his last O&A appearance one of the last things he said was he just wanted to be remembered ,well it's sad to know that he won't ever know how much he is missed . His advice on women and life , prioritizing your happiness above all else really changed my life and every now and then I find myself tearing up knowing that there will never be another Patrice O'Neal. What Patrice really left behind above the comedy was the idea of being righteous to yourself and what you believe to be the truth. He respects Charlie Sheen for standing up and not being a phony. When I was a kid, I never thought much of this appearance because I did not know of Patrice back then.
Now as an adult, I have consumed many hours of him on Opie and Anthony and his standup. His peers and those who worked with him hold him in such high regard.
Seeing this again now, I realize this was Patrice absolutely nailing everyone. The jokes may not have been refined but that’s because it’s just him being him and commanding a room the way he always did. Total legend this man was and it’s a crying shame we are hurling through the universe on this rock of doom without him.

This was my introduction to Patrice. Never saw anything like it. I was intrigued by his off-the-cuff style, taking pauses to find words and breaking off sentences halfway through. It's rough around the edges, but the jokes land super hard. I thought he did it that way to make it feel more real among all the rehearsed sets with pre-written jokes. Now I realize that this actually was mostly improvised, which is genius.

He had that shit planned out and knew people were gonna catch the real meaning of the punchline only after he was dead, knowing he'd never be able to relish his fans' reaction.
