Day in the life of a Veterinary Assistant!

  • On a typical day you would have multiple rooms going, many patients to see. Usually you get pulled every way shape and form to help your team.
    I have a great team behind me, they have helped me learn everything I know now and are always excited to show me new things and test my capabilities. Although I am still learning and I have a new journey to become licensed, I’m hoping this channel will help out any techs assistants or techs and give some insight on the field!

      @@lifeinthebay8360 You don't need to go to college to be a vet assistant. You just need to take a certificate program, just make sure you check with your state's requirements. If you want to be a veterinarian, then you can take any major like: biology, zoology, etc.

    I just retired from my first career, planning to begin a new career as an assistant, remote learning during the Covid pandemic. Of course, when I started my practicum, we were barely out of restrictions. I was so fortunate to find my practicum and subsequent employer. The point is how you demonstrated it all; I felt like I succeeded when I could recognize your day! It made me smile... Thank you!

      Find out about the different unis in your country that offer vet (unless you are rich enough to travel overseas for vet haha). Then find out the differences, decide which one you want to go to. Look at the entry pre-requisites and work towards those.
      Good luck! It's really competitive since so few universities actually offer vet courses. In Australia there are only four. In New Zealand there is only one. There are quite literally thousands of students across the country competing with you for the same seats.
      Make sure you get good grades, and get lots of work experience. I got work experience with animals across the board (wildlife, large animal (cows, horses, sheep, pigs), small animal (cats, dogs, rabbits etc.)). Just anything that helps you stand out.
      Good luck!

      It is highly dependent on the state. Many states have different laws for what assistants can do vs was licensed/registered/credentialed veterinary technicians can do.

    • @PiercingChild
      @PiercingChild 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@katanddawg I agree. Also in my experience as a new vet assistant (coming up to almost a year in my first job as an assistant) it also depends on where you work. For example, when I did my on the job training at a small clinic, I got to discharge patients, fill prescriptions etc. Where I am now, I work at a large 24 hour hospital and they don't allow assistants to do those things.
      But a simple way to explain the difference is that vet techs are like human nurses. They administer meds, place catheters, take blood etc. Assistants don't do those things but we clean, walk dogs, clean kennels, restrain animals, help in surgery, clean, autoclave and wrap surgical instruments, put patients/owners in exam rooms and clean up after before new patients come in etc. I like being an assistant because there is so many different things to do that you're never bored.

    • @katanddawg
      @katanddawg 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PiercingChild Hopefully things become more streamlined soon and consistent between states. CVT/RVT/LVT are fighting for title protection and clearer guidelines regarding the differences between credentialed technicians and assistants.
      Technicians, licensed or not, also do all of the things you listed for assistant duties plus more technical skills. It's what makes a great veterinary team!

    • @alliegarcia3904
      @alliegarcia3904  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! I think that’s an awesome goal.
      As far as getting started, you can always reach out to different shelters or animal hospitals and apply/volunteer for the kennel position. This will get you into a hospital and slowly introduce you to veterinary medicine. Once you’re there you can always ask questions, maybe talk to the managers about your interest in assisting (hospitals USUALLY promote within the clinic, if you’re a kennel tech and are interested in assisting sometimes they will help move you up to achieve your goal)
      As far as money goes, the vet field as a whole doesn’t pay a whole ton. BUT, you an always grow. Every clinic and state are different so you would have to do a little research around where you are to see what they make and if it suits you. You can go on indeed and search vet assistant jobs near you to get an overall idea of what starting pays are!

      Yes. Either from a community college or trade school. Programs range from 12 to 18 months.

      Most vet assistants get on the job training from what I’ve seen but if you want to become a vet tech you will have to go through schooling

    • @alliegarcia3904
      @alliegarcia3904  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically it depends on the clinic. Most clinics will train an assistant on the job. You do not necessarily need to be a certified assistant but again it depends on the state.
      I know Penn Foster does both a certified assistant and a certified tech course.

    Hi where are you from? I'm a certified VA from NY and we are not allowed to draw blood or give vaccines :/

    • @alliegarcia3904
      @alliegarcia3904  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! So every state is different with what they allow assistants to do. Some states are more strict than others. Same goes for clinics, one clinic might allow a VA to do much more than another clinic.
      I live in Florida, technically you don’t “need” a license here to do this like blood draws and what not, which can be nice but also frustrating for some CVT’s.

      you have to go to vet school but yes u can be a vet assistant there is a program called pen foster you can take so you wont have to go out and spend so much time to get upgraded from a kennel tech to a vet assisiant

      I’m a certified assistant, they teach you this in your schooling.
      Plus, every clinic is different. Some uncertified assistance can administer vaccines and draw blood. It really depends on the clinic and the state allows.

    I noticed clients aren't involved ? Honestly worst part of the field is patient have an owner you have to educate! There is such a thing of a stupid question especially from grown ass pple you have to explain how to care for a dog that need to eat and drink water and train. There is a high rate of suicide in this field. Pple are stupid. Entitled and they multiply. Pple need to show the real side of the field. It's not calm, cute and cuddling BS. Clients can be very ungrateful.

      But as an assistant you do draw blood, get together vaccines, assist the doctors and what not. I was planning on making a whole video dedicated to that so stay tuned for it!

    This is a bit misleading as assistants don’t draw blood. Depending on the state and hospital, they may. However that’s not a part of the job.

      I'm from SoCal, and I'm a vet assistant. It really depends on the clinic. My old clinic, they wouldn't let me attempt injections or blood draws, but I work somewhere else that gives me the opportunity to do everything. Now I give SQ and IM injections, check vitals, do blood draws, anal gland expression. Have yet to put an IV in, but it's in the works as I go further to get comfortable with surgery stuff. Heck they let me read cytologies for ears and skin
