Talking about bringing back memories, when this song was released at the time, I felt in love with a girl where she had to move to another State to lived. I remembered saying our last goodbye then finally I dropped her at the airport. However, my emotions overwhelm me driving back home alone, I cried while this song was playing on the radio. She was pregnant carrying my baby in her, and that was the last time we saw each other. I'll never forget her, and I will never forget that moment and that song.

What always amazed me, was that Taste of Honey was able to take this soft understated ballad from 1961 and rework it in english during the middle of the disco era and have a hit with it in 1980. I think we also find so appealing because of it's use of the pentatonic scale in addition to the octave scale we're most used to. You can also hear that scale used in the Ben E. King song "Stand By Me" from the same 1960's time period. Listen for it at 1:53 in this clip when the violins kick in. th-cam.com/video/hwZNL7QVJjE/w-d-xo.html

I'm not 100% sure but instantly I thought of Slick Rick. I really feel like in the middle of one of his rap songs he suddenly altered his voice and threw in this verse "I'm feeling sad and blue" and it echoed off and then he went back on into the song again. For the life of me I can't remember which song that was.
But yeah not only that I some how knew the rest of these lyrics too. So I must have heard it else where but definitely not a japaneese version.

I was like 12 or 13 when this song was a hit and I thought they were Japanese and not black R&B singers (didn't realize until later they were the voices behind "Boogie Oogie Oogie" from the disco era). I think that was because the Japanese sound and name made me think of a geisha girl singing, and also they performed it in geisha attire live on TV playing the koto. Finally, I always thought the title sounded like Japanese cuisine (perhaps confusing it with "teriyaki") but then later learned it was given that name which is indeed a hot Japanese beef dish because it was easier for the Western world to pronounce, remember and identify as Japanese.

Original song for this was Sukiyaki created and sung by a Japanese American. He sung it in Japanese and it became a big hit the states and in Japan. Check it out it's in Japanese but it's great song. It was a guy singing it I forgot to mention that

I think you may be around the same age as I am so I wonder if what you're remembering the opening lyrics from is a rap song called "Ladi Dadi." Originally done by Dougie Fresh and Slick Rick. Then remade by Snoop Dogg in the early 1990's.

You pronounced it correctly. It's a Japanese dish that has nothing to do with the song but the title was chosen only because that was the only Japanese word Americans knew at the time.
