Good to see you managed to work things out. I'd like to apologize for how I worded things earlier regarding your previous video. I wrongly made the assumption that you were aware of the service menus on the consumer Sonys and that the claim being made (regarding not having such a menu) was directed specifically at the 27V26 and not the sets in general. The Sony sets from the mid 90s onward should all have service menus, some being more complex and some being less complex, from the lower end mono sets all the way to the high end XBRs. It's also worth noting, that just like the PVMs need you to specifically save the settings you've changed, so do the consumer sets. Changing settings and just turning the set off will **not** keep the changes you've made. You need to press Muting and then Enter, at which point "WRITE" should pop up, turn red, and then disappear. At which point, the settings are saved. I'm sure you are aware as to why, but the reason that the service menu is not visible while in RGB mod is because of the method of which the RGB mod is done. While all of the registers being poked and setting being changes are native to the jungle IC, the actual visual portion of it is being generated by the OSD. Since your mod completely disconnects the OSD's video output when in RGB mode, these visuals are not shown. Moving to the setting you wish to change, swapping to RGB mode, and then adjusting it WILL work as the registers are still being poked and the setting is still changed, the picture showing the number changing just isn't being shown. The way to get around this would be to properly mux the OSD and external RGB sources so that both can be fed to the jungle IC at the same time, which is similar to what is being done on a PVM and on European sets with native RGB (sometimes externally, sometimes internal to the jungle IC itself).

Hi, I have 2 Sony Trinitrons 14" KV-1484 and from what I have found out they are too old to have interface service menu - all service adjustments must be made with small knobs found inside the TV. Have you ever worked on such tv's and can you maybe do a video about it or point me to where can I find info on such service adjustments?
Awesome video I have a Sony KV27V42 with the RM-Y165 remote and the service menu was the same but to WRITE the settings I had to use Muting (top left) then Enter (under 9)
Thank you, great video. Good on explaining how each component, composite input looks different. I found that out trying to adjust for svideo and component HD retrovision cable input. I got it perfect for me.
I am drooling over the linearity you managed to find on these old consumer sets. I've been scouring my local craigslist and facebook marketplace and have struck out three times. Every TV I aquire is is a mess.
Sorry about my English, but I suffered from the same problem (positioning with S-Video and RGB doesn't match) with my Sony KV29FS100. But, in my case, I couldn't adjust with service menu because RGB shifted image to the left, and my HPOS is evaluated in zero, i.e., I can't shitf image to the right, causing an assimetrical aspect. What can I do to solve this problem? Thank you very much, I'm a big fan of yours. I saw 240p Test Suite in RT for the first time.
Hello, I have a Sony Trinitron kv-21t3u with RM - 839 remote. I can get into the service menu but the adjustment figures are locked I cant change them at all.
How did you enable the service menu in AV mode? When I turn on the service menu, I get to the black screen. I can switch channels and volume, however, nothing happens when I press the change button the inputs. It’s just not clear how to do calibrations without visualization.
I've been having issues with a high-mileage KV32FX68 with 32" wide flat CRT; no matter how I set the cutoff and drive in the service menu, shadows have a noticeable green tint, while highlights are magenta. Plus the whole thing is very dim overall. Mind you, this thing has over 25k hours(!) according to the working time readout, so I take it it's definitely knackered. I have a Müter rejuvenator, but I've heard few if any success stories with Trinitrons, on top of which I'd have to fabricate a socket adapter first. Probably not worth the trouble... Compare this to our humble 19" Blaupunkt that's seen 30 years (!) of daily use and still has a decent picture for its age, and had just two repair jobs. (Inside lurks a Valvo tube with Grundig electronics).
I have a Sony Triniton KV C2911 D and the Remote also has no display buttona and when i do the combo and when i press 5 the TV turns on which doesnt happen for him. We may not have a Service Menu at all..which would suck ^^
Hello! I hope you can give me a hand with this, please!!! I have a pair of Guncon lightguns for PlayStation 1&2 (in perfect working condition) but every time I try to calibrate them, the pointer ends up roughly 2-3cm to the right of the target reticle (I'm trying on a Panablack CT-G2995). I tried on a 20 inches LG and it works fine, but I need to use the Panablack since it has component input. Now, when I turned the TV off, I noticed that the left central screen marker (the little dot) is considerably farther from the tv frame than the right one. Could it be that the screen has misaligned inside the TV? Do you think opening the tv and manually centering the big screen could solve the problem? I hope you can give me a hand, thanks for reading!
Sony KV-HW212M95 I was trying to remove overscan, when finished I turned the tv off and somehow changes were reverted! HPOS for an example was set to 45 but after turning the tv off and on it was 42 again.
I'd like to calibrate my (1989) Sony Trinitron KV-27SXR10. I think I need to reduce its vertical size, the bottom edge of the screen is cut off in most NES, SNES and TG16 games! It has the green overlay text for standard user menus and adjustments, but I can't seem to get it into service-mode using the remote. Will I need to open it to adjust pots? Unfortunately I can't find the Sony service manual, but would love to know more so I could fix it!
Hey Steve, have you ever made a video defining/detailing each aspect of a Sony service menu? I ask for the purposes of correcting the geometry and linearity on my Sony Trinitron, but I don’t know what each setting does or stands for in a Sony service menu.
Sony remotes are pretty universal in functionality. Just go through a thrift store and dig up any Sony from the remotes crate. You can even grab the DVD ones, they usually do 90% of the TV controls as well.
Doesn’t the RGB mod use the OSD video lines for display? I think the service menu has some separate settings for the osd centering; that might explain why the RGB centers differently than the inputs. You should be able to match them up by adjusting the osd offsets.
HI, as oon as I press any button on my original remote, it just automatically turns on the TV. Looke din the service manual, says to do the same thing, but it just won't work. Model is KV-M1440B. Any help would be appreciated
Had the same problem. Found the solution for mine today. Try pressing "Info" (officially "Display On Screen", confusing name ikr, anyway it's got an "i" or a "+" on it, or both) then "5", "Volume Up" and "Tv" button (it's the one that is an empty rounded square).

Any idea which setting to adjust a pincushion issue? My 13” Trinitron looks great except for some minor vertical issue which I believe is called pincushion. Also how do you exit the service menu? Thank you!
I can get into my service menu, although my geometry tweaking values are locked for some reason (KV-21T1D). It's not the remote buttons, they work fine elsewhere in the menu.
I have a kv-29t80 model tv (very similar to this one taht you have) but I don't have the remote. Once I use S-Video which is native to the TV, should I assume that I don't have to worry about this calibration?
I’d freakn kill for a consumer set with geometry that good. I’ve got a Toshiba 32af44 and a Sony kv27fv300 that both have some wonky asymmetrical geometry going on. Otherwise good sets, but the geometry bugs me.
It's only available on Sega Genesis (Mega Drive), Sega CD (Mega CD), Sega Dreamcast, PC Engine/Turbografx-16, Super Nintendo/Super Famicom (SNES/SFC), Sony Playstation, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo GameCube.
I’ve got to adjust the yoke on mine. Both its position and the rings. Even if you didn’t actually move yours maybe just talking about the effects of each one would be nice? If you epoxied it I wouldn’t blame you for wanting to leave it. Maybe you could find another bad one to show what they do. I know I still see trinitrons everywhere and I already picked up three.
When I turn my TV off and turn it on after making adjustments in the service menu, the TV reverts back to its messed up state. I’m on a Sony KV-27FS13. Any help? Thanks

Hi Steve! I picked up a Sony Trinitron 13in with Composite. The screen looks pretty good for what it is, but around the center right of the screen it looks fairly wavy. I wanted to see if I could get some direction on what to look at to correct this issue? Thanks!

The issue i'm having is the image is simply wobbly. The sides and bottoms just arent straight. The bottom pushes in and the sides push from the left in wards.
Sorry to hear that. A lot of times that can be from either the deflection caps or the caps on the power supply area of the board. After 20 years or so, they can start to cause wonkyness.
So I opened the back and cleaned out years of dust but I didnt notice any bad caps or anything of that nature. My Sony KV TV only turns on when pressing one of the numbers on my remote, and doesn't power on when pressing the power button on my remote (But does power off when pressed), which makes it impossible to access the service menu. I like the way you review man , not like others pretend to know everything ! Keep it real as always & keep it up 👍🏼
Thank you once again so much! This worked on my Sony 37" KV model too!
Holy shit that thing must be huge! Only have a 32” and good lord is it big!

Hi I've got a 2001 sony trinitron 27in crt....the image is slightly bowed horizontally and also with a solid blue screen the sides are reddish and if I tap tv body the red sometimes goes away or switches from left side right side any idea why?
I have mostly old XBRs from 95/98, I can't believe how good they are now.
Any fix for wobbly screen
Just got old Sony trinitron crt KD-27S65 27” from 1998
Thanks Sir, it helped! I could center my old console display and make full use of my screen's size. Cheers.
I love crt from retro games and vhs recorders hi from Russia🇷🇺
I just picked up a sony kv35s42 for free and that thing is A BEHEMOTH! !!!
Pretty cool you still work on CRT
Am I risking anything by running the 32” version of this tv in “Tate”?
(Inside lurks a Valvo tube with Grundig electronics).
may I ask where you learned this? I have a KV-s2953e but it has no display button on the remote so I have no idea how to get into the service menu
I have a Sony Triniton KV C2911 D and the Remote also has no display buttona and when i do the combo and when i press 5 the TV turns on which doesnt happen for him. We may not have a Service Menu at all..which would suck ^^
@@mariotheslut pressed the like but do not like :P I still haven't figured it out.
I hope you can give me a hand, thanks for reading!
como me gustaría que estuvieras en Medellín Colombia para calibrar mis tres televisores de tuvo para mis video juegos. 😅😅
Sony KV-HW212M95
I was trying to remove overscan, when finished I turned the tv off and somehow changes were reverted!
Wow you have so many crts I'm jealous
Hey Steve, have you ever made a video defining/detailing each aspect of a Sony service menu? I ask for the purposes of correcting the geometry and linearity on my Sony Trinitron, but I don’t know what each setting does or stands for in a Sony service menu.
I adjusted everything to my liking just to turn off the tv and everything did not save. How do you save the settings ?
Did you get it to write? I haven't had any luck, no mute button on my remote and menu then enter didn't work
What about blurry text? My KV-25C5K displays all sorts of text, especially in the service menu, in quite blurry fashion.
Help please!!! Sony WEGA kv29fq60k.
Can't fugure out service menu!!! Really need help!!! Display, 5, vol+, tv on won't fits. ((
Can you get an after market remote for this?
Yeah I have the same problem, pressing 5 powers on the TV.
@@seanlees8429 Try mine.
@@dragonspirit9256 I don't know if it will work for you.
You turn your tv off with the remote and press the buttons I show on this image: ibb.co/yRRJfcH
Bem linda até RGB scanlines mais qualquer importante perfeita 😉😎
I really wish Sony's round tubes had component video inputs. Is it hard to mod it for RGB?
I did a tutorial on the mod. It isn't that bad. It's about the same as a NES RGB mod in difficulty.
@@RetroTechUSA Thanks for the reply Steve! I'll have to check out that video and try it out!
Hey you wouldn't know how to set the default screen mode in the service menu, my trinitron always turns on in 16:9 and I want it to default turn on to 4:3 to save me the hassle of pressing the button every time?
Sounds like a SCART cable issue: make sure pin 8 gets 12V, not 5V.
Hi Mate where can I download a 4:3 Color bar image and a test pattern so I can calibrate the colour and geometry on my Sony CRTs. The size of the image looks wobbly on the vertical lines and image is far too bright
I own a SONY Trinitron KV-32FS13 and the way to save the settings after changing things in the service menu to your favor in that TV is, "Press MUTING then ENTER to save into the memory."
Excellent video. I have a trinitron tv and i see some wave effect and I can't modify some options like pamp, hpos, trap etc from the service menu, i just change the values but nothing happens, and some others options I can. What could it be?
these tv's look so much more rad than hd tvs!
Any idea which setting to adjust a pincushion issue? My 13” Trinitron looks great except for some minor vertical issue which I believe is called pincushion. Also how do you exit the service menu? Thank you!
Helpful to get into service menu. Unfortunately the video could not help me with anything else. Back to square 1. Well, 2.
I can get into my service menu, although my geometry tweaking values are locked for some reason (KV-21T1D). It's not the remote buttons, they work fine elsewhere in the menu.
Can you make any changes? You have to usually use the "1 key" to go up &"4 key" to go down. Then use 3 & 6 too for change settings.

I have a kv-29t80 model tv (very similar to this one taht you have) but I don't have the remote. Once I use S-Video which is native to the TV, should I assume that I don't have to worry about this calibration?
Is it possible to adjust the size of the image, that the corners will fit to the screen?
I’d freakn kill for a consumer set with geometry that good. I’ve got a Toshiba 32af44 and a Sony kv27fv300 that both have some wonky asymmetrical geometry going on. Otherwise good sets, but the geometry bugs me.
very helpful video thank you
Are you using the arrow buttons to change the settings within a category? Because I only have a controller that works the main functions.
Hi Retro Tech its possible to have this calibration software for N64 Everdrive? - Thanks!
It's only available on Sega Genesis (Mega Drive), Sega CD (Mega CD), Sega Dreamcast, PC Engine/Turbografx-16, Super Nintendo/Super Famicom (SNES/SFC), Sony Playstation, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo GameCube.
Subbed and belled!
Awesome, thanks
Read up on this ir for any other tv for every servixe manual expressly made for the specific models
I can do a video in the future working on it.

Hi Steve! I picked up a Sony Trinitron 13in with Composite. The screen looks pretty good for what it is, but around the center right of the screen it looks fairly wavy. I wanted to see if I could get some direction on what to look at to correct this issue? Thanks!
Hello! im very interested in how did you calibrate the geometry of a B&O Mx4000 ...could you help me please? Thanks in advance, a greeting
I have a Sony KV-32XBR50 and this combination didn't work. No sign of the menu combo in the manual either
Thanks for your video. Can you demonstrate how to calibrate white balance, please?
Is there an easy way to correct a pin amp like problem but in the horizontal orientation? I understand that most variables only change vertical direction like pin amp corner pin, pin phase, V.angle, V.lin and so on. I dont know how to calibrate similar problems in the horizontal direction. Do you know how?
I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. What are of the screen are you having trouble with?
@@RetroTechUSA sorry im not so good at articulate my self in english. In the top corner The image droops down. I want to lift The corners to The edge of The screenarea.
Hopefully I can use this to work everything out with mine. Will be putting in lots of time. Trying to get the damn geometry back to normal. My only issue is mine is a HD tv and from 2003.
I dont really wanna mess with the psu because I don't know how to safely discharge the tv. If the tv was discharge i'd recap every single thing and put it all back. The tv i've got has tons of options to change everything but most of its to vague you really cant tell what exactly you're changing.
None the less I still vastly prefer playing my retro games on a huge crt with some wonky geometry than having to deal with the awful picture quality of playing sub 720p games on LCD/OLED/Plasma
did not work on my kv 1370r, any advice?
I have a Sony Trinitron with VCR combo I tried every combination however that power button (standby button) doesn't turn on the tv. To turn it on I need to push channel + or - or any chancel number on the remote. This doesn't work. What should I do?
I just bought a PVM-14M2U Sony Trinitron and the screen is off pretty bad to the left of the screen. I’ve already messed with horizontal settings but didn’t do anything.
What’s a good alternative if you don’t have a Super Nintendo to run the 240p test? I have PSX, Xbox, N64 currently.

So i just recently found a KV-40XBR700 and it wont let me use the Display, 5, Volume Up and Power on method to pull up the service menu. Yet, i can adjust everything and manipulate the TV with the remote. Any suggestions?
My 13FS100 came without a remote, and it's a model that only the remote it came with will work.
I wonder if there's any universal remotes I could use with it
Almost any Sony tv remote from will work. I actually use my 13FS100 remote for all my other Sony TVs, since it's nice and compact.
I used an RCA 3 in 1 universal remote and was able to do everything except WRITE the settings. I needed one button from the proprietary remote to write my settings. Thankfully I found the remote and cleaned it enough to work. Good question
They should be decently easy to come by. Ive picked up 15 sony CRTs and they all came with remote except 3. I probably got lucky. I am also pretty happy with the RM-Y194 mini remote that does everything you need in a 5 1/2 inch length which fits well layed next to a Roku express+(have 6 for the CRTs, recommended) controller.

In service mode there is horizontal line to set the white line calibration

My Sony KV TV only turns on when pressing one of the numbers on my remote, and
doesn't power on when pressing the power button on my remote (But does
power off when pressed), which makes it impossible to access the service menu. I have tried both on a non-Sony remote and on an official Sony-branded remote, which means that it's something coded in the TV itself. How can I make it so that the TV doesn't turn on when pressing one of the remote's numbers but instead actually turns on when pressing the power button?

Thank you very much!
Even with the menu -> enter, my settings dont save when the tv turns off and back on, they default to the original settings. Got any ideas? KV-13FM13
Try pressing Mute then Enter.
In my case (KV-21V6E) it's Mute (which causes the "service" string to change to "write") and then 0 (zero) which changes the "write" color to red and does the actual writing. If you're too slow to hit zero it goes back to service.
Ive done this with rear projection tvs but didnt know you could do this in a non projection tv
Cool
My Toshiba TV has an area near to the top corners squeezing in and there isn't a single person on the internet able to help me with it. Service settings dont help as it appeaars theres something wrong inside.
