I saw the Who for the first time the concert immediately after this one, on Thanksgiving Day 1973. That was almost 50 years ago, and it was still the greatest concert I ever saw. I was star struck. Years and years later, I read a quote from Roger that Keith wasn't very together the night I saw him...still recovering from the Cow Palace incident...but I thought he was brilliant. I was lucky enough the see the Who twice more with Moon and another 11 times after he passed. He was one of a kind.

I was at that show with my very first boyfriend in high school. He was a huge Who fan, in particular bass player John Entwhistlle. I was 15 and it was a crazy show!

One of my closest friends was at that show. He too was a drummer and raised his hand when Pete Townsend asked the audience "Is there anyone out there who can play drums, GOOD?" My friend told me the guy (Tom Scott Halpin) who was chosen was "Ok, but I could have done better ". And he's right! Oh, how close he came.
BTW - Just a minor correction: The venue was called The Cow Palace Arena in Daly City, California. With Peace and Love to all! (Michael)

You should dive into the greatness of Keith Moon. He was unique in style, and played like a monster…the WHO’s sound was in great part due to Keith.

It happened at the "Cow Palace" not "Cow Park."

Quaaludes, were big back then. I saw a friend walk face first into a sliding glass door on them. Bounced back and went, Whoa! (Didn't feel it until the next day).

I was there! Lynyrd Skynyrd opened for The Who. It really was history making and I’ll never forget it! The poor guys just didn’t know what to do without Moon to play drums.

I was at this show. Nov. 20, 1973. The Who came back in 1975 and did two make-up shows at Winterland in S.F.

In case no-one's mentioned it, this was a case of history repeating:
    (a) Keith Moon got the job by substituting (at his own insistence) for the then-current drummer
    (b) As an aside, many years earlier Dannie Richmond got his job with Charles Mingus by "auditioning" under stressful Scott-Halpin-ish circumstances

The Cow Palace was in DAILY CITY. the Who were well established , Skynyrd was relatively unknown then .

Somebody came up to him and said "If you take half of one of these with a brandy you get an interesting high" He didn`t know what it was but said "half of one"? I`m Keith Moon and took it whole.

You were surprised (about 7:22) when you heard he took a horse tranquilizer because when horse tranquilizer was mentioned at about 6:20 i think you talked over it.

They had asked Lynyrd Skynyrd(opening act) drummer if he could do it but they had been partying too much after their set for him to do it

The Keith stories are not well explained here. Keith had almost a couple of crazy stories for just about every day of his life. But of course he was a brilliant drummer, and a much loved and extremely funny and generous person.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was not even remotely as popular as the Who. If you know the entire history of The Who, they had been around for longer quite a bit longer, and there’s no comparison between these two bands. To illustrate that, I don’t even remember seeing Lynyrd Skynyrd that night. If that’s even correct. And we literally wrist our lives getting tickets and stood outside in the rain all day to get in there to see The Who.

I was there too and only found out recently watching the Lynyrd Skynyrd documentary that they opened for the Who that night. I have no memory of them, just the Who. But in the doc they said it was the first time playing to more than a couple of hundred people. That night it was over16,000 people.

Lynyrd Skynyr was not even in the same ballpark as The Who. They were a wanna be Allman Brothers Band and were not even close to that. You cannot even compare them to The Who The Who get in discussions with the Beatles and the Stones when it comes to greatest rock bands of the 60s. I am a Who guy in that discussion.
