  • The Music Man Majesty is a fantastic guitar. Sterling by Music Man makes budget versions of the Majesty with the MAJ100 and MAJ200. How do they stack up to the real Majesty?

    The notches in the nut of the EBMM majesty is because it's a compensated nut to adjust each string length individually to improve intonation. Also the majesty has a hex adjustment for bar tension, you can see it on the backside of the trem block if you push the tremolo down.

    This video is so useful for people questioning this when buying a majesty, thanks for that! I own a MAJ200 purple and I'm really happy with it, as long as you have it professionally setup it will play wonders. I definitely think the upgrade from MAJ100 to MAJ200 is worth it, considering you'll spend 200 on the pickups alone + labor if you're not a luthier yourself, might as well get it from factory with other part upgrades too... not to mention MAJ200 finishes are usually more premium.

    I have the MAJ200 in Royal Red and it’s a beautiful guitar. Within 8 months of owning it the push-push pot went bad and while Sterling did send me a replacement under the 1 yr limited warranty, I decided to do my own thing. I pulled everything out, did away with the boost circuit, and installed bourns pots with the tone being push-pull for coil splitting. I also installed a Schaller Sureclaw which makes adjusting the trem springs a breeze. With my setup specs, it stays in tune and I don’t have a lot of issue unless I really get crazy with the whammy bar. However, sometimes you can end up pulling it back into tune!

    The most significant difference between the Ernie Ball and the cheaper Sterlings is the piezo pickup on the Ernie that the Sterlings don’t have.

      Thanks! I don't have any videos on string changes, but it's similar to a string-thru guitar if you're familiar with that. Setting the bridge height is also similar to pretty much any other bridge, with the two screw posts. You can check out this video, th-cam.com/video/OI-kxH0N2hw/w-d-xo.html. I don't do the height adjustment on a floating trem, but it's the same process.

    Thanks for the video! The only thing I don't like on Maj100 is satin. The only thing that I don't like on Maj200 is the abscence of shield. I think I will buy a Maj100 (I already have set of CL and LF at home ready) and bring it to luthier to make the Maj100 more glossy!

    Great post. I’m a big fan of Sterling… I own a JP 157-7string, a JP 160, a JP Maj100, and a JP 70-7 string. Not to mention my JP Majesty Artisan 7 string.
    The nut on the Majesty is compensated and works well. I enjoyed watching you and subbed. Looking forward to more content when I catch up on older posts.
    Thanks for your time. Be well. Peace.

    My only experience with a JP Sterling was comical but not in a good way. I stumbled on one at a local Guitar Center and it must have been taken right out of the box and immediately put on the wall because the nut was cut so poorly that the guitar tech on scene said it was impossible to fix and they would have to send it back. The B string was literally laying on the frets. It looked like the nut was cut with a hacksaw. Neither one of us could figure out how that guitar could have possibly left the factory. I trust that was a unicorn.

    Thank you so much for this! I’m a huge Petrucci fan and want a MAJ but couldn’t decide if the extra $2k+ cost could be worth it for me. I’m definitely going for the MAJ200 after seeing this and I just prefer the Cerulean color. I have a plan to buy it in about a year. Also, you’re extremely skilled!

      I bought a used (but in perfect like new condition) Ernie Majesty from Guitar Center that was only a few hundred dollars more expensive than a new Sterling maj200. I saw a few used Ernie Majesties on Reverb and Guitar Center in similar price range that I bought mine.

    I have that exact same Majesty 6-string in Titan Blue and I absolutely love it. I gave a MAJ100 a test run at a Guitar Center before ultimately deciding on the true Majesty because when I had a chance to test one of those, I absolutely fell in love with how absurdly versatile that guitar is. To me, it's like having three guitars in one: Fender Stratocaster, Gibson Les Paul or Ibanez Signature Series (such as a Satriani), and an acoustic. That versatility made the $3800 price tag much easier to swallow, though I sometimes wish I'd ordered a 7-string instead of the 6. I'll just have to save up for another one, I guess. Great work on both your review/dive into the Majesty and the comparison/review between the Majesty and the 100/200 Sterlings. They're still great guitars, and if I didn't love the Piezo bridge so much I'd have gone for a Sterling for sure.

      I have to say I'm jealous. I had to send all those guitars back, but I really miss that Majesty, especially the color. You're right, it's super versatile, especially with the Piezo bridge.

    From what i heard and from experience, the interesting difference in sound between sterling and MM is from just the bridge alone. People tend to look over this but bridge can quite significantly change the timbre or the tone of your guitar. Especially if the difference in quality is massive. I hear that the MM has that typical soft yet snappy, plummy, and bouncy attack that more expensive or premium bridges have. Also clarity, theres more separation even tho the rainmaker is supposed to be darker. And the evenness of the frequency, the bass is punchy but not overbearing. Its like it has broader spectrum of eq. I had the same experience when i change the same re-branded gotoh bridge to a hipshot trem. Its like totally different guitar, night and day.

      The music man bridge mounting posts tend to have more play and wiggle, making it easier to end up in a different position after trem work. A bit of plumbers tape will tighten it right up.

    In the Majesty the electronics are for the Piezo, the boost and all the switching between pick-ups. They use a programmable electronic switch. The real hardware switches are watched by the electronics , the pick-ups are not connected to the hardware switch. The switch is only programmable by the Music Man. If I remember well there is a MM guitar where the user can "program" the switch possibilities. I have the red Majesty, the first model, so the one with the lasered wood and satin Finnish. I love it.

    Now I haven't watched this video yet, but will...I am commenting on the thing that I consider a HUGE difference between the MM version of this guitar versus the import Sterling version...and then will comment on a possible remedy to achieve in the Sterling version what the big thing that it is missing versus the MM USA version...it isn't what I call a 5 minute fix...it would take some work...here it goes (no doubt you cover this discrepancy in this video)...the MM version has piezo saddles to get an acoustic tone out of that guitar...here is the remedy if you want to have that in the Sterling version...I put a Graph Tech Ghost Floyd Rose on a Floyd equipped guitar of mine, and it works great...I put mine in with a Hexaphonic circuit board with a 13 pin output so I can use it with my BOSS SY1000, but they also make an Acoustiphonic circuit board...you can equip your guitar with one or the other, or both, depending on what your needs are...to me, in the case of the Sterling Majesty, in order to have a budget version of the "real deal", you can equip a Sterling Majesty with those electronics, and get great results...thanks for the video...going to watch it now. Editing in more...not sure why they didn't put at least a coil tap push push on the tone control of the Sterling, to tap both the neck and bridge pickups, but my guess is that could be wired in as well for a fee or if someone is a do it yourselfer.

    MAJ200 Stainkess frets just didn't look anywhere near as polished as those on the EBMM. I'd happily polish my own frets and save the $2k. Adding Fishman Powerbrideg saddles etc. could get the MAJ200 even closer to the EBMM

  • @bluwng
    @bluwng ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The tuning issue is,inherent in design and the root cause is not at the nut. Guitarist always insist the nut is the root cause and there is no objective evidence to substantiate this. The problem is at the bridge solution is modifying the holes on the sustain block and string holes at the bridge or buy a Gotoh FST design which resolves this or buy locking saddles.

  • @marcelo.bassalo
    @marcelo.bassalo 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    For a 1050+ USD guitar, this "cheaper" option should have had stainless steel frets. That plastic nut is not great either, graphite is the minimum at this price point on other brands.
    I like the look and the fact they have locking tuners but this could be more for the buck.

      Doesn’t matter if it’s a $100 or $100,000 guitar. No guitars would stay in tune if you bend the shit out of its strings and yank the hell out of its tremolo bar. And it’s even worse if the guitar has a brand new set of strings.

    I had a very bad Majesty Monarchy 7 a couple of years ago, the QC was AWFUL, it was terrible in every way, out of tune constantly, a tiny bit of black paint in the maple shield and the piezo stopped working! The pickups were stunning (Sonic Ecstasy) but the rest of the guitar was utter dogshit. Then I bought a JP15 Sahara Burst and it was the same, sharp, shrill and the piezo had problems... AGAIN. I wanted to change the pickups and due to the electronic preamp it wasn't possible. I sent both back and picked up a very luxurious Mayones and it was 10x better than MM. I'll never buy one again and I hate that brand so much even though I'm Petrucci's number one fan. How sad I was when I looked at the case, being totally excited and realizing all of this things after it. Never again.
