I've been hoping to open commissions, and have even announced them, but nobody is commissioning me. The prices are really low, but I'm still not getting any coms. What might I be doing wrong? My art isn't horrible, and I've seen people get commissions with less (not to say I'm great or anything, I'm not. I am trying to say that I don't think that's the reason). Any tips? You might not be doing anything wrong, it might just be that there isn’t much appetite for commissions in your style right now. That won’t always be the case. Please don’t undercharge!!
I'm 15 and have been drawing things for people for the past half year. I didn't know where to start with paying commissions, thank you so much for this!
Ive done some commissions so heres some tips I suggest myself: Pls charge $40 dollars and up, time to draw commissions can be difficult. When charging a price do it after you've finished the artwork. Also include the amount it takes to ship, get a frame and other materials. Always be nice when talking to them about what they want in a drawing. When shipping it give them the tracking and check up on them once they've received it. That's basically it😅
about the 'color of the hair' meme post or whatever, you can actually really easily fix that by making a new layer, setting it to clipping on the part you want to be purple, color all of it purple, then set the layer to color! and the color will be change instantly, so it wouldnt be that much of a hassle to fix it, it would just take a little bit of time to fix
I have been following you from year 1. Your art is very amazing and every toutoral you make is very helpful. Also your characters are very unique in style
This is a year later, but for anyone seeing this recently and wondering the same, I would recommend 50% before, the rest after you finish the commission (and send it with a relatively large watermark). After receiving full payment, send the art without the watermark. Until you gain a good reputation where you can ask for 100% upfront.
I would like to know too and would you send the payed art work thought picture format or is there an other way, this might be super obvious but I'm stupid and over think things 🙃
find the potatoes depends on the medium you use but if you do traditional art you either send a picture or send it to the person but with digital you send a png or jpeg :D hopefully that helped
Hey, I'm starting comitions soon but I'm torn between two styles. I do draw characters and enjoy doing head shots of cute characters that I let people adopt. Honestly I just started doing commissions, like not even 24 hours ago so I don’t have any commissions yet but I feel confident that I will get at least one! And ty for the tips, they were very helpful
I've been trying for a while to sell commissions, and I've been told by absolutely everyone I know in real life that I should raise my prices by a lot, in the beginning they were anything from 50 cents to 5 dollars. But the problem is that ABSOLUTELY NO ONE knows that I exist at all, and I really just don't know how to fix that. I try using tags on insta, but those tags are full of thousands of other pics, It's kind of upsetting tbh. I thought when I started that I'm fine with having no followers as long as I can get commissioned and make a living, and in the beginning for my low prices I was overwhelmed with commissions and my mental health went down bc of stress/school. The second I raised the prices, though, I've barely gotten a commission since. I would really appreciate if anyone gave any advice pls im dying here
Same here. No followers on instagram, no clients. Instead everyone ask me if commissions are open and I always say: yes, yes, YES!!. Still have no clients despite I low the price. I really don't understand (Sorry for my bad English. It's not my native language)
Gosh I know that feeling all too well 😅 Offering commissions as a less-known artist with not a huge follower count is honestly really difficult. Even if you make amazing artwork, if you’re not a recognizable creator who’s popular from other platforms, chances are you’re going to have a hard time finding customers. It can be very upsetting when you put hours into your artwork but still feel like you have no reach. Unfortunately it seems that the best way to become a popular art creator and get more commissions is by dedicating time on other platforms to show off your work and by taking part in what art challenges are trending. Although these methods may not always work, I’ve found that they’ve helped me in the past. Another tip I have is to remember your own worth and avoid comparing yourself to other creators. A lot of times I’d find myself looking down on my artwork and never feeling like it’s good enough and this can very easily make you loose your motivation to create artwork. To avoid this, make sure you take breaks between large projects and take the time to draw characters you really love. Also redrawing your old art can be a really good way to boost your confidence and really show how much your art style has improved. Best of luck to you! 💖
Thanks for the tips! I take comms but I’m not comfortable enough to do paypal so I use an app called amino and just charge amino coins. This is a great alternative if you want to improve your art skills but you aren’t ready to charge real money for commissions
It's so interesting how I got into drawing because I started redrawing your anime style eyes from your "6 anime eyes tutorial" and thanks to that I'm now into drawing! (Insta, markers..) 😁 btw this video helps a lot, but I'm interested, around how many people knew you when you opened commissions?(followers) Like, am I enough popular to do it...?
I'm a VERY small artist, not even considering my low art level compared to many others, but I'm still willing to start commissions. If I do traditional art, do I need to send it to the person? Or just a picture via the social media?? And if I do need to send the artwork, is it gonna work via mailing it?
I do commissions a lot as a purely traditional artist. For sending the artwork, it is up to you if you want to, but if you do, you need to add on the price of shipping the artwork onto the commission price that the customer pays. This additional charge covers the cost of the postage and packaging (I use chipboard mailers with a clear cellophane bag to cover the artwork).
What i recomend for making sure they like the art first is sending it with a watermark and then they say if they like it or not and if they dont thats ok becuase u watermarked it :3
Thanks for the video, love your art❤️. When do you think is the right time to get into commissions? Should I get better at the basics before offering my services (I’m a beginner)
You should start doing commissions when your comfortable with your art level. I’m no commission guru but if your comfortable with it it will be much easier!
Your tips are very helpful; I started commissions a while back by offering free lineart of other people OC on DA. I had a few requests, but once I started charging it stopped; I want to open them again, but I'm not on DA. Don't know if I should go back because I'm only on IG; I was thinking of going with RB or S6 for now until I can get my own store set up. I work M-F so I'm trying to work around that schedule.
I'm here and I'm five minutes early. I can't wait! That thumbnail looks amazing too!💗 I also just remembered I'm 9 days into Inktober and I STILL haven't started yet!😑😥
This is kinda what i would do with my commission schedule I have it open for 1 week, then its closes at the end of that week and whatever commisions i have i do in the next. After that when I finished, on the start of the next week I open them back up and let people put commissions in. Also google forms are your best friend
Though this is 7 months old thank you so much! I've been recently wanting to make money of my own, so I can help with family expenses and have like pocket change. I thought commissions would be the best option considering I love art and I have been suggested before that I could earn money because of my skill level. This helped me alot and i really do wish to start commissions soon! ^^ I just have one question, any suggestions of how to get payments?
So I'm thinking of doing commission but I'm not sure what to draw, I draw a variety of things but I'm not sure if that would make things complicated if I do more than one art skill I guess, does anyone have any advice?? (Also apple the drawing you did in the video is absolutely adorable I love her!!!! I'll have to make some fan art of her and send it to the discord lol)♡♡
When you go to make your commission sheet, it's fine to include a variety! Just specify them all on the sheet with example pics so your clients will know the exact details.

Hello! I know your comment was made a year ago but I wanted to say that perhaps people don't comission you because you don't have a lot of followers? You should first start posting your art and when more people notice you, you can start doing comissions! Anyway, I know that your comment was made a year ago and you might do comissions now, but I just wanted to say you shouldn't give up! Have a great day!!
@@Heythere191 Well. Before opening them I did post my art, I am not dense XD And no, to this day no one gives a damn. I am okay with this now. Not everyone can make it.

I'm still young I still have a long way to go at the same time I'm also in school... what I'm saying is 'not to get too desperate in wanting to start a commission now, it's great to learn more about others experience and learn from that as it will help us in the future when we do start doing commission... Idk if it makes sense but to those whose thinking of strating take it nice and slow and think more into it 😄😁
Which websites do you use for getting money if you're a minor?? and where can you list your commissions if you want the person to have complete control over the piece? i thought maybe etsy buuuut you cant be a minor for it....
Thank you so much! I’m an artist who plans on doing art commissions so this informative video of yours is very helpful! Also too I joined your Discord. 🤟🏾❤️🙏🏾✍🏾 🖍 🤑
So I've been checking out some videos explaining commissions and how they work. I think my biggest issue is just figuring out what my product is. Doing characters is not my strong suit but I do like to draw abstract ink drawings but I think most people are more or less looking for characters or portrait work. I haven't found anyone who specializes in something other than something that involves drawing people. So I think this is what I need to work on before I start commissions. Unless there's someone actually making money off of something else besides drawing people. Let me know
i kind of wanted to do commission because i need urgent money so that i can pay my rent, my dad is an asshole so apparently i have to feed myself and pay rent myself(im 15 and also there's no part-time available for 15 years old here in case you want to tell me to go get a part-time work or something). but the problem is i'm not even close to small artist, I'm basically invisible. not only that I'm afraid if I'm gonna suck, and end up with 0 customers. I'm not that confident too since i barely draw these days...i think my artstyle is almost near average if not average but that depends on who's viewing it, people could be thinking that my art is nowhere near average. also i take pretty long time on finishing my pieces(around 3-5days or even more since I'm busy studying and doing stuff), even though people say i should take my time but I'm afraid that my customer will grow up impatient. yes i know I'm just scared but i can't help it, there's just too much going on around me

apple youre my favorite youtuber and you inspire me so much! you’re the onlyreason i don’t give up on my art!
That thumbnail looks amazing too!💗
I also just remembered I'm 9 days into Inktober and I STILL haven't started yet!😑😥
Apple to.u should do drawing holidays as people!
(Sorry if I’m late)
This is kinda what i would do with my commission schedule
I have it open for 1 week, then its closes at the end of that week and whatever commisions i have i do in the next. After that when I finished, on the start of the next week I open them back up and let people put commissions in.
Also google forms are your best friend
Thanks for the video. Been drawing more and considering commissions.
I just have one question,
any suggestions of how to get payments?
I started accepting commisions like 6 moths ago and I just got my first one this week
Congrats!
thank u so much
So I'm thinking of doing commission but I'm not sure what to draw, I draw a variety of things but I'm not sure if that would make things complicated if I do more than one art skill I guess, does anyone have any advice??
(Also apple the drawing you did in the video is absolutely adorable I love her!!!! I'll have to make some fan art of her and send it to the discord lol)♡♡
When you go to make your commission sheet, it's fine to include a variety! Just specify them all on the sheet with example pics so your clients will know the exact details.
Hey appleminte um I was wondering if u could like do a video on how u shade in procreate and what brushes u use I’m not sure if anyone else wants to see a video on this but I needs some tips on shading in procreate so.... yea
I saw this drawing on your insta, and I honestly love it!
Like, look at her hair! :D
Thank you!
does anyone know any resources on if/how taxes work for commissions?
im planning to sell art but when its finished idk where to send it or how
I closed my commissions today, i've opened them a long time ago and no one was interested. Really Nice tips ! But i feel like give up, this is not for me.
@@Heythere191 omg this is so nice of yours djdsjddk, i love your catra pfp!!!
@@Heythere191 Well. Before opening them I did post my art, I am not dense XD
And no, to this day no one gives a damn. I am okay with this now. Not everyone can make it.
I am a 15yr old girl wanting to start an art commission after watching this video and reading so many comments about they're struggles with they're orders it made me think a lot more into it. I'm still young I still have a long way to go at the same time I'm also in school... what I'm saying is 'not to get too desperate in wanting to start a commission now, it's great to learn more about others experience and learn from that as it will help us in the future when we do start doing commission... Idk if it makes sense but to those whose thinking of strating take it nice and slow and think more into it 😄😁
Monthly Art contests sounds fun
Most of what i said in the live chat was "AIAZAWA IS HOT"
Lol
Also,
Maybe you can name her stormy, serinity , midnight, or somethinh like that!
I used to name like all my ocs midnight and it was so cringey 😭😭😭🤚
I came early from discord. What’d I miss? Oh wait nothing! Because I came early! Also really god job Apple!
Can you show how to draw anime, in different poses. I mean, one anime all possible poses
Thank you so much 🌸❤️❤️🥺
You can also do commissions for free right? Or isn’t it a commission then?
No its not
Which websites do you use for getting money if you're a minor?? and where can you list your commissions if you want the person to have complete control over the piece? i thought maybe etsy buuuut you cant be a minor for it....
Thank you so much! I’m an artist who plans on doing art commissions so this informative video of yours is very helpful! Also too I joined your Discord. 🤟🏾❤️🙏🏾✍🏾 🖍 🤑
what does she use to draw so beautifully
Hi apple minte can you do Again a tutorial 😔🥺 please
I'm not that confident too since i barely draw these days...i think my artstyle is almost near average if not average but that depends on who's viewing it, people could be thinking that my art is nowhere near average. also i take pretty long time on finishing my pieces(around 3-5days or even more since I'm busy studying and doing stuff), even though people say i should take my time but I'm afraid that my customer will grow up impatient. yes i know I'm just scared but i can't help it, there's just too much going on around me
Thank u so so much!
