I do feel the pressure be a representative for my ethnicity, also. When I walk past someone, I feel obliged to smile and show that my ethnicity aren't all grumpy, backwards, judgemental people. It's almost like I'm not allowed to have a bad day. When I'm exhausted, I just don't feel like proving people wrong, but when I don't smile, it forms a fear in me that I just reinforced a stereotype about my own people. Its kinda hard out here.
I’m an Oxford graduate of Somali descent (graduated 2010). I completely relate to everything you both say. There was a time I felt so isolated because there were few minorities with a similar background to me (family on benefits). I 100% do not regret applying though - it’s worth sticking it out and in the end you’ll be a stronger person for it.

My Wife's cousin is White and also had a hard time at Oxford due to the fact he was not privately educated. The other students would use alot of Latin in front of him as they knew he wouldnt have studied that at a 'free' school.
I studied at Oxford Brookes University. I lived in Oxford for about 20 years. I loved my time in Oxford and i found Oxford to be very muli-cultural. There is a large black community in Oxford City itself. Enjoy the rest of your time there in Oxford. It is what you make of it! All the best people. ❤

Old post but just felt like answering. Oxford is one of the most prestigious universities in the world. Therefore with a degree from Oxford no matter what degree generally opens door to a lot of jobs, presumably the majority of students studying in Oxford are very intellectually able. Even in Singapore an Oxford or Cambridge degree opens doors.. I know this is true because my brother is studied history at Oxford & now Head of an investment banking group in Singapore. The job he does has nothing to do with his degree but his Oxford degree shows that he is very likely intellectually able.
