The way you explain your jobs, you make it look so easy to do the job. I thank you for that, I’m sure going to work on my own car leaning from your videos, thank you very much for all the videos, and trust me I’m looking at all your videos I can find over and over to make sure I under all of it 👏🏼👏🏼
You've got the alternator 180 degrees backward LOL. And I guess you realised the X5 has a different crank case venting system when you fitted the lower sump and noted the drain in port :)
Great video. Have an '03 with about 150K, am the 3rd owner. Don't know if the timing guides were ever done, so I will assume "No". With that, and no cold start rattle yet, should I replace the tensioner? Would that forestall guide failure for some time, vs. leaving a tired tensioner in there? When I pull out the old tensioner, is there a risk of the guide falling down and/or jumping a tooth? Thanks again for all your insightful BMW videos.
Yes, Yes, and No : -- Replace the tensioner. -- It will prolong the lifetime of the guides, by reducing the clapping friction of the chain against the guides on cold starts. -- There is no risk of the guide falling or jumping tooth when replacing the tensioner.
I have an E38 that I'm gonna bring back, I will be using your videos to change out the timing chain guides. I would like to change out all the seals and gaskets on the motor so I may take it out of the car..
My timing gaskets are fine right now but my water pump went out. I'm around 113k so I know eventually I should care for the timing guide and cover gaskets . But it's fine to put a new water pump on and re visit the timing chain later right?
to do a 2001 e38 740 engine (Vanos, Chains, seals, valley pan, engine timing) with no experience using the Bentley service manual or online DIY forums, is it safe for a non savvy person, chances of screwing something up ? can i just follow the instructions and get it done?
I have a question for you, the bolt that holds power steering pump in place I broke the bolt in the hole I got it drilled out but the guy made the hole hollow causing it to break! What the name of the part that holds the power steering pump in place ????? I think it's called the upper pan or the lower case cover?
how u doing nathan i just do vanos repair on my engine m62tu and when it finished the timing was wrong and the engine shaking so bad . i fix timing but there still little shaking un engine. is that mean the first wrong timing harmed the valves ? so vibrating will still even the timing is right ? thanks
got that right..3 guys that bougt donor engines i warned them ..to replace the guides tney refused .and 2 blew within 14 months the other 6 months later
Hey. Thanks for the video man. My guides have broken apart, its noisy as hell but hasn't jumped a tooth. Is there any other jobs I need to do in there now its full of plastic? B
Hey Nathan with a BMW 03 540i with a 4.4 followed your timing guide and timing set video and did the valley pan now the car wants to pop and backfire like timing is off I checked the timing twice and rotated and put jigs back on and everything lined up what do you believe the problem maybe waiting on a scan tool to scan to see if it gives me a any help would be greatly 😔😡🤔
I’m gonna guess you already figured it out a year later, but for every full turn of the crank the cams move a half turn. Sounds like you had the crank pin in on the wrong cycle. The number 1 cylinder should have the intake and exhaust cams pointing at each other, otherwise you’re 180 degrees off.
Hello Nathan. taking into accout the prestigie the public have for you a question : I have a 1994 bmw 540i v8 and to replace the engine by 550i biturbo v8. The question is, fit and work? Doubt is strong hug. Paul
Great video(s)! @01:50 you talked about not letting the timing chain tensioner slack off... ? I'm about to change my timing chain tensioner due to its failure.... how should I proceed? I'm thinking I should pull off the VC and use a screw driver to hold/keep tension on the tensioner. Any thoughts? Do you have a video on changing the tensioner with the engine in the car ? I have a 2001 540i - thanks.
Hey wassup i need a slow video with ever thing i have to do and for timing chains with all the tools also i have 01 740 i found guides but i found metal like a part of the lifter or piston its big.. Might need a video of how to rebuild. Detailed slow video so i wont miss any thing or get any thing wrong or break a nut. Its a lot to remember and my guid chain is loose. I droped the oil pan oil pump chain is tight but one is broken on it . Nothing shakes on oil pump. chain is good. I notice the guid chain hanging and a u shape piece of metal. Half to rebuild, want to do it my self. Help
How did you handle the OSV differences between the 540i engine being behind the timing cover and the X5 being at the back of the engine? I am going to swap a X5 M62TU into a 540i and looking for pointers. I already see i need to change the upper pan, oil pump, and oil pump chain. Anything else? X5 enigne only has 77K.
Its not worth the swap there are tons of things that are different, get one from a e38 or another e39,you have to change the oil pump chain which you have to remove the timing chain to do that
i am not worried about removing the timing covers and chain etc. looks like most of the engine is the same except oil pan, oil pump chain, and the OSV system
TH-cam search "Auto Dr diy". He did a multiple part series on how to do this job. In one of the videos, part 4 or 5 I can't remember, he shows you how to get the crank pulley bolt off. He had to make a tool for it.
Had to replace the timing belt on my '96 Outback, after it failed on the road, and couldn't stop the engine from turning (did not know about pinning the flywheel...). Tried everything, and finally, in complete frustration, just put a pipe on the end of a 1/2" ratchet, prop it agains the ground, and kept turning on the starter. Took 3 or 4 attempts and the front end was hopping up like a Mexican Chevy, but it worked! Glad it wasn't reverse threaded....:-)
you can tell it's the wife's car because no way she lets you bring a motor into the house no matter HOW shiny it is if it's one of Nathan's beaters - lol

Nathan, what water pump you recommend BMW OE plastic or after market metal propeller? Thanks

Is the alternator aluminum case a part of the front cover?

Just comparing this to a small block Chevy V-8: is it worth all of this complexity? Given that most people shift far below 4000 RPM?
got that right..3 guys that bougt donor engines i warned them ..to replace the guides tney refused .and 2 blew within 14 months the other 6 months later
I'm gonna attempt a head gasket and valve job on 2000 540i, anything i need to lookout for?
Is there an adjustment for the power steering chain? I seem to think there a nut in there to do so.
Hey. Thanks for the video man. My guides have broken apart, its noisy as hell but hasn't jumped a tooth. Is there any other jobs I need to do in there now its full of plastic? B
What is the ft lbs on the crank bolt when reinstalled?

It was a massive intake leak drove for 1 year and sold the money pit about a month ago no more bmws for me good luck to you all

Rosana Miranda I'm sure you could do it but you would have to have the whole donor car from the 550

it can fall back and hit the cover, but if the upper timing cover is not installed then the guide will fall too far and jump timing
I plan to just remove the old chain tensioner and screw in the new one - with opening up the engine covers(chain or vc). Wish me luck.
that will be fine, but if its making a growling noise its probably the chain gudes

well, i already purchased the X5 m62tu. am i screwed?
i am not worried about removing the timing covers and chain etc. looks like most of the engine is the same except oil pan, oil pump chain, and the OSV system
Thank you Nathan
How do you tighten up the oil pump chain do you have to remove the whole oil pan to get to the oil pump you never made a video on oil pump
What are the signs of failing guides? I have 02 4.6is with 79k miles. Thanks.
You can hear the guides growling at cold start
Can you be more specific in terms of sound?
a grinding or rattle , if you remove the oil cap it gets louder
Dude i can't get the Crankshaft pulley bolt off. I had 2 fly pins snap. What else can i do?

so after you pulled the engine from the hoist it was transferred to you engine stand . nice
+CoolinKofi I just picked it up and put it on the stand... lol i used the tractor and the bucket to do it

That thing looks almost like the Ford 4.6L modular engine!!!
why?said back right lamp malfunction?
+Trino Munoz Check the third brake light trino, they usually throw a error for that
Thanks
I never understood the reason for the water cooled alternator.
+bimmerman3 Yea im not sure that alternator cooling is that much of a issue
They moved back to air cooled alternators on the E60's etc..
Im sure they figured out machining the front case to hold that alternator was not cost efficient
+Nathan's DIY Garage Some engineer sold it well when they were designing that engine.
hi friend is that m60 or m62 ?
m62tu
thanks friend .. i have 740i with m60 and have miss fire problem can you help me pleas ?
random misfire or certain cylinders? any codes?
random misfire friend and i dont have diagnostic tool my BMW is 740i 1995 how can i find the problem friend and thanks for your time
Check the ccv on the rear of the intake and make sure the throttle body rubber boot is not torn
ops: the questions is, fit and work?
+Rosana Miranda I'm sure it will physically fit but getting everything to function correctly would be difficult
do you have facebook page?
Dimce Gligorov hello yes I do the link is in the video description, or just search for Nathan's diy garage
Okay. Thank you.
Because i am leaking lots.of.oil and planning to.open valve covers and upper timing covers and want to.recheck timing
Nathan's DIY Garage got it.
i will message you there.
thank you sir
It's a bmw 745 2003
