Please never stop making videos. They’ve had such a strong influence on my reading life. The Gracq recommendation has me rereading the Tartar Steppe in anticipation! Thanks as always
Claude Simon has ruined my life. I went on a bender a few weeks back with this girl and I brought along Triptych, The Palace, and The Georgics for company and afterwards I’ve been in a daily rotation of depersonalization leading into self-actualization.
Hey man, I read the first 20-odd pages of flanders road and I got to the montage bit about the jockeys' colored silks flitting against the blackish-green screen of chestnut trees which was too much stimulation, much too intense, and I had to get off the carousel. I don't know how anyone can write that way. Probably some of the best 20-odd pages I've read. Anyways thanks for the rec. 🏇
I was just finding some books to read for summer break after finals. Always a great day for a Paperbird video, also Paperbird, have you read any Mircea Cartarescu? I've just bought Solenoid for myself. I only got to start it a few months ago when it was newly released before having to return it to my library. It seems like something you'd be interested in.
Good luck on the finals! And enjoy reading Solenoid, I really like Cartarescu, both Blinding and Solenoid. Actually had the fortune to meet him a couple weeks ago during his US tour, it was "blinding" to say the least :)
Considering you have an admiration for Faulknerian authors who do those 5 page sentence things like Simon and Antunes I was wondering if you've checked out any Camilo Jose Cela he seems like an interesting author. Also just wanted to say this is a great channel love the editing style
@@PaperBird amen brother, amen....do you know the publisher CoronaSamzidat....they publish extraordinary work...they just published this year the complete Roberto Arlt SevenMadmen/The Flamethrowers....and the publisher is one of the great forgotten american novelistists...
I've always wondered how you accumulate all of these clips? Do you keep a large tonal record of fuckshit you come across or do you actively seek it out when you start a video? Perhaps these are common and i'm just out of the loop. Great vid as always :)

thanks for the comment :-) Hope you enjoy Gracq; the Opposing Shore is a great companion book to The Tartar Steppe
When you're happy, you enjoy the insanity. When you're sad, you understand what he's saying.
Hope you're doing alright Paperbird.
doing good, thanks for the comment, Russell :)
God these videos are always so satisfying. I find my self pausing and looking up the books in the background. A lot packed into a few minutes.
I read the Benet novel last year for the first time. It was a best of ‘22 read for me. You’re lucky to own a copy, so nice. Mine was a library loan.
thanks! this one ran a little longer than usual :)
awesome, that book was definitely one of the best for me as well last year
new paperbird - it's a good day
I thought I was the only one with a secret, enduring obsession with Claude Simon.
Listening to this while walking through the library, surreal!
Please make more videos PaperBird. Best book youtuber by far
Got some lovin' in the oven
Amazing video! I just bought the book like a week ago and I so look forward to reading it. I think I’m going to buy some Gracq books now.
ah very cool, hope you enjoy the book
Been waiting for a new vid to drop and I'm not disappointed. Bravo.

Try that shit that happened to the squirrel.
unless they're round, try and wear your spectacles upside down.

I just saw that NYRB will be publishing a new translation of Buzzati'sThe Tartar Steppe (1940) as The Stronghold in May 2023. Lawrence Venuti, trans.
ah... interesting choice of new title :)
My man... 👍
visceral! manipulating all nerve endings as always
Your vidoes are always like art, Paperbird 🙌 Do you think I’ll like Simon?
thanks Silje, he's worth a swim (with life preserver :)
When’s your novel, man?
posthumous at best :0
Why does claude simon fascinate you so much?
i find that he writes extremely beautifully, on so many levels, with a kind of simultaneity that is not often seen

For each video I hunt for new clips, though I have to search kind of sideways instead of specifically in order for the results to be usable
