Great video thanks. What about this low weigh lens f3.5 for astrolandcape photography ?? I would really aooreciate your comments about. Thanks in advance. Alberto
Personally I find 12mm to be rhe sweet spot for an ultrawide prime. Below 10mm and you're getting into more niche focal lengths for landscape. Had the TTartisan 7.5mm f2. Built like a tank, included drop in NF filter. And I paid under €100 new. Apart from the optics not being exactly stellar, it's just not ideal to be limited to that focal length. My old sigma 8-16mm f4.6-5.6 was great. Clearly targetted at vlogging rather than wildlife since an ND would be needed anyway and a fast aperture isn't necessary. But waaaay overpriced. €899 here. At least €300 pverpriced. Can see this going the way of the 18-120mm. 8mm much more useful on a zoom. An 8-16 f4 and 10-24 f2.8 would be nice options for fuji to offer. Never felt that evem slower sigma 8-16 ever held me back from getting the images i wanted to make.
I too love 12mm the most, beyond that starts getting that GoPro vibe, the Viltrox 13mm is also fantastic and has become my new favourite due to the f1.4. I don’t really get the 8mm, it’s too wobbly/distorted for vlogging with ibis, it’s too slow for Astro or low light, just seems very niche. It’s like if you want GoPro like focal length and don’t need the durability?
Hmmm, it's to evaluate the value in some ways. I slightly prefer the IQ from the prime, but it is considerably wider than the Tamron zoom. That's great if you want really ultra wide, but the Tamron has the more practical focal range for most landscape work. It also has lower native distortion and a faster maximum aperture. Value really comes down to how wide you need to go.
A good honest review Dustin - surprise, surprise, I'm a happy owner. Is it test card perfect? No. I agree with the corner softness, But for me its the overall image that matters and its already created some great images that I really enjoy and in particular some spectacular timelapse's that I've just not been able to create before. The colour reproduction that Fujifilm lenses achieve is to me, so satisfying - something I've not seen from the (cheaper) independents. Yes its a niche product, but its an incredibly creative one. Right Fuji, please create a 12mm, fast prime, there's a big gap in the range.
Nice review Dustin! Have you noticed particularly soft corners when shooting say a large building from far enough (like 30ft-50ft) at f/3.5? I am getting Very soft (pretty much blurry) corners up to about a 10mm FOV which don't improve that much until f/11, even without any distortion correction in the raw file. Not sure if this is to be expected given the focal length or if the Fuji 8-16 gets better corners at f/4 or f/5.6 (against a flat structure). I know one can stop down even at dim light if you have IBIS so not that big of a deal. My Fuji 10-24mm has excellent corners even at f/4 (compared against the same building and setup) but that's at 10mm, not 8mm. Based on your review I think the answer is that this is to be expected and that it's not better for the Fuji 8-16 but it would be great to confirm. Thank you.
Yes, I am experiencing something similar to you. Please also read my comments about this lens above. Dustin's test results provide excellent discussion but he did not shoot from infinity. I find the corner blurring to be apparent if you mainly shoot faraway subjects and zoom in to view the sharpness. The corners are just disappointingly soft when zoomed in, especially at wider apertures. I think this is an inherent flaw of the Fujifilm 8mm lens because it's so small and light. They have somewhat sacrificed corner sharpness for a small and simple lens design. That explains why for other camera brands like Canon, if they produce an ultra wide angle prime or zoom, they are big and heavy. You need a lot of high quality optical glasses and more complex lens design to improve the image quality at the corners.
Like its compact design, but the focal length is too wide for my taste. It seems Fujifilm is missing the range 10-12mm with a fast aperture, leaving me no choice except the 10-24mm F4
I have the Fujifilm 10-24, some may slow it's too slow, however as it's basically used for landscape and ,naturally wider shots in laneways + more, f4 is often the starting aperture anyway..
@@parasecglenkwyst4835 yeah, a very solid lens and no equivalent from Fujifilm yet, but still a little bit large for my taste. Maybe a 12, 13mm F1.8 or F2 and more compact size would be better
I enkoy shooting with the 10-24 mk2. But I am looking for omething sharper and with less flare without having to carry the 8-16. especially for printing the photos. I guess with an 8 or 9 mm if they are sharper and brighter, it is ok to crop to get, let's say a 12 mm equivalent, still sharper than what you would get by shooting with the 10-24 at 12mm @@DustinAbbottTWI
I am going to Dubai. Would you recommend EOS R or R7 with RF 14-35 F4L for photo only, no tripod. This will be for RAW photos (static objects) day and night , no video and no tripod. Larger sensor but no IBiS or more modern processor and smaller sensor of the R7. Also, on the R7 I won’t be able to go as wide, but I can zoom in closer with the same lens. This is the dilemma. Which camera do I take with me. Which one would you take ? Thanks
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks a lot, I was leaning towards it too. Selfies with 14mm with lots of skyscrapers in the background are very cool as well. I can bring RF 24-105 F4L instead of 14-35, but the flare resistance on 24-105 is abysmal and I love the sunsets/sunrises. RF 13-35 is also considerably sharper
Finally got my hands on the 8mm. I was so looking forward to it but I am disappointed. The image corners exhibit Fujifilm's trademark blurring for many of their zoom lenses and older prime lenses. :( I thought the 10-24mm can be somewhat bad at the corners but this 8mm is no better or even worse. I totally did not expect it from a prime lens. At f/3.5, the corner softness is very noticeable and unacceptable if zoomed in. At f/5.6-f/8, the softness improved but only slightly. After f/8, the softness worsens due to diffraction. I tested the lens on the X-T5 and shot a distant landscape scenery at infinity.
@@DustinAbbottTWITrue. Although for that wide VOF and deep DOF, AF is only critical for limited occasions. Hard to justify a $800 price tag. I’d rent it for a few days occasionally for some trips though. Great review as always!!
@@codeofcodedotorg f3.5 is f3.5 regardless of how big or small the sensor is. If you were correct then changing the aspect ratio of the lens would change the brightness, which is obviously ridiculous.

Agreed on the zoom ratios you suggest, though no such zoom is going to be quite as compact as this lens.

Please don't shoot anything at infinity with an ultra wide. Try hyper focal focusing and the corners should look much better.
The title is missing the "R" designation.
That’s a conscious choice to keep the title length down. Fuji goes a little crazy with their lens designations sometimes.
