- Massachusetts rapper Joyner Lucas went viral earlier this month with “I’m Not Racist,” a two-part, hookless song rapped from the perspectives of a racist, Trump-supporting white man and a black man respectively. The song elicited a range of reactions, racking up over 15 million TH-cam views and netting a No. 15 slot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart along the way. As Lucas explains to Genius, the track was designed to stir up people’s emotions.

“We were all human until race disconnected us, religion separated us, politics divided us, and wealth classified us.”
Jisélle G As uplifting as this message is, it’s plane wrong. Nearly all primates have tribal warfare and we’re no different. The warring tribes from the beginning disassociated themselves from eachother then the races, religions, politics, etc. divided us.
And wealth is just a modern measure of society’s hierarchical structure. Tribes themselves are hierarchical structures sooooo also uplifting but blatantly flawed.
We were all human until race disconnected us,religion separated us and wealth classified us
This is the most corny shit from this song

Joyner is one of the realest rappers out there, been watching him for a year now damn

A rapper that cares about lyrics rather than mumble rap cliche drugs and hoes. Count me as a fan
Aye I’m like ur favorite sub
Crazy Limper i’ve been watching him since “along came joyner” i bet you don’t even know what that is.
TD Tomei don't be that guy
I’m happy he made this song, it shows facts and flaws of the extremes of both sides, it’s basically just shows there’s 2 sides to everything
Yeah better to see 2 sides than only 1 side. Even better, not to see things in such a binary way. Most people I know aren't much like that. In other words, there's a spectrum of people trying to understand the world, and there's the 'sides' with their certainty. Personally I see two very ideological men, rather than the 'racist, Trump-supporting white man and a black man' referred to in the description.
This is obviously written from basically one perspective. The problem I have is that the white man is actually racist, which is unlike a majority of white people and supporters of Donald Trump. The black guy is just playing defense. It just paints a picture that all white people are racist, and black people are always in the right, and just defending themselves from white people. It isn't really showing both perspectives, the white perspective is used to try and falsify the arguments of white people, and the black guy is supposed to push that further. This song is certainly not written from two perspectives.
DomesticLlamas23 not true, the black guy said some racist shit too
Accept for climate change
Seth Bishop Its just etereotypes.
The fact that y'all really tryna tell this man HE misinterpreted his OWN song speaks for itself.
FR THO
I think the video is just edited weird and leaves out a bunch of stuff. At 3:50 he is agreeing with the "white guys" arguments so its seems he wrote it how many people are interpreting it, which is there are good/bad on both sides
jag213213 there is...he just made the message blunt and condescending...neither side is flawless and there's truth on both sides...some perception too
These replies lmao. Straight up ignorant and in denial. The hatred too .. just proving my original comment. If you're not black, you won't understand. I wish people would at least try to put themselves in our shoes but empathy is not America's strong suit.. smh.
FryManAuty not reading that short novel, been there 1000 times too many .. but ok. Save me the fry bits?
I feel like they didn't give him a chance to say the actual meaning. This is so filtered😒😒
What do you think the real meaning was?
@@blueicydasani4543 the way that I see it is they're only taking small parts out of the song and letting him speak about it. There are moments where he's doing nothing but saying the lyrics. Compared to the other videos on here they allow artist say how they feel about EVERY lyric. I know that some of the lyrics in this song is straightforward but there are a lot of things he mentioned that people don't know of today. Such as the poverty rate lyric. There's more I would like to say but this is already long so sorry for the paragraph
@@aniyahselmon3688 Ok i respect that.
@@valentinapia7320 Man seriously?

I JUST REALIZED AT 2:28 HE SAYS "my sister in laws baby cousin Tracy" AND THAT LINE IS FROM THE MOVIE FRIDAY. WHEN THE GIRL SAID " WELL MY SISTER IN LAWS BABY COUSIN TRACY SHE SAID SHE WENT TO THE SHOW LAST NIGHT AND SAW YOU ALL HOOKED UP WITH SOME TRAP, NOW TELL ME WHO SHE WAS" LOL
Larri Merrit ohhhh
Dam I am dumb for not realizing that
Omg so funny 😐
Larri Merrit yesss I love that movie
GOOD FOR YOU FOR POINTING THAT OUT BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO SCREAM IT!
The reason people are disappointed is because people thought this song was meant to be the middle ground and unbiased. No longer something bashing black people or bashing white people but instead something pointing out the flaws in both sides and the miscommunication that's going on. Common ground that no one wants to reach. People thought that the message was that we both need to quit assuming things about the other and actually need to listen for once so we can end the petty bullshit. But then after hearing the intended meaning it completely destroys the song because its just another anti-white song saying that white people are the wrong ones and black people are right sending everyone back to square one. The race war is never gonna be fixed like this because the other side will always feel attacked and misunderstood. No one wants to give up and accept defeat but even the most stubborn and hardheaded people are willing to compromise. So I thought that's what this song was supposed to be. Middle ground where we can stop assuming and start listening. Turns out it wasn't though. Just my two-cents at least. Hate it or love it idc.
Couldnt agree more
Joseph Ferris I mean to me the arguments are better for the the white people in this song😂 Joyner went off with the facts with the white guy HAHA
Joseph Ferris 🙏🙏🙏
Yeah, this guy's the biggest racist I've ever heard... what a disappointment. If you're white, that's all you're allowed to be nowadays - doesn't matter if you live in a palace, or a single-wide, you still have some imaginary privilege that supposedly just gives you a one-up in life. My family came here in the 1920's as refugees from Ireland with literally nothing but the clothes on their backs, yet two generation later, we've suddenly become an oppressor of minorities? I'm not buying it. Also, what about the hundreds of thousands of white people who fought and died in the civil war to free the blacks? - are they automatically racist, too?
There’s intended message, and there’s unintended message. Joyner’s original message that he WANTED to send out was the anti-white message, but he also released the middle ground message, which everyone believed in before the interview. This song is revolutionary. It is bigger than the artist that made and bigger than the meaning the HE wanted to send. It turned into something bigger, and there’s definitely a middle ground argument in this song, and that is the message that we should take from this song, whether if it’s what the artist wanted or not.
I really don't like what Genius did with this video. The song is obviously about the fact that they're two sides and that every side has some good and some stupid arguments but Genius portrayed it in a "white man racist, white man bad" and "black man being real, black man good". Now if you're thinking why am I blaming Genius and not Joyner, it's because if you pay close attention at some parts you can see that right as he finishes rapping and wants to comment something they cut it to the next rapping part. And it's sad cause I see people in the comments are disappointed not realizing what really happened.
GUYS the song is what you thought it was, I mean the lyrics speak for themselves. It's just that Genius edited this in such a way to look like he's picking the black person's side.
Yeah
no, look on the website then. the lyrics aren’t the same as Joyner’s interpretation

Noobie WatcherZ yeah idk man it's were life is at. I'm 75% white and 25%
Exactly and the way I take it is two sides explaining how they feel. That's it. It's not about who's right and wrong. It about them understanding each other's side. Doesn't mean they will ever agree but it's meant as a start. I don't think if that was the artist opinion but that's what I take from it.
The message in this song was so powerful, didn’t even need to explain the lyrics if you really listened!💯

The song isn't really all that great. He didn't really help prove the point for the black community. His comments on the white community spoke more truth than the refutes he used as the black community. Someone will come up with a better track and show Joyner how it's done. He's just the first one to do something like this.

If you read the description of the video, it explains how the white man is a racist, trump-supporter but the black man is respected. I don’t believe Joyner’s lyrics were interpreted wrong by himself. I feel the video was edited possibly by genius to depict the white male as the true villain and the black man as the hero. Joyner knows both extreme sides have an opinion that come off as smart and stupid remarks. This isn’t an example of Joyner taking sides, instead this is depicting a lie to us all by genius.
respectively means in order. so the white man and then the black man in that order. not that the black man was respected. however yeah seems weird to add racist white man supporting trump then just call the black man a black man.

PLEASE UPVOTE THIS MESSAGE. I think that's Genius' fault they edited the video so much to make him look bad. That's what all about this one-sided explanation.
Ikr watch "Just Like You," "Keep It 100," or his "Gucci Gang" or "Mask Off" remix and you can clearly see that his views on thug culture, drug-dealing, and the crooked world are very underrepresented, here. In this video, they make it seem like he doesn't care about not none of that shit.
Nabil I most definitely agree
Genius is fake news.
Of course they did, it has to appeal to a bias or they won't make any money from the racial divides which have been artificially inflated recently. A song designed to break down these barriers has now been portrayed to do the opposite, look to the song to understand the meaning don't take anyone else's word for it
Nabil You know that for them to publish the video artist has to accept right ?
The fact that he was able to write a song from two opposite perspectives, with parts that he doesn't agree with or that would offend him if someone said it to him is really, really amazing. Everyone likes to talk about their side without looking twice at the other. But he put in both in a skillful and honestly freaking beautiful and brutally honest song

Emmanuela you're kind of wrong in a lot of what you said.
Emmanuela White Privilege doesn't exist. I grew up fatherless struggling to make it by. I lived the whole cliche. I've never had a better opportunity to be something over another because of my skin color. You're just gonna sit there and act like the NBA and NFL aren't predominantly black? Colin Kaepernick is gonna kneel because he feels oppressed? He got paid millions to sit on a bench while out troops won't see a fraction of that money. He's gonna complain about oppression, yet he'll wear a shirt and feel bad about the death of Fidel Castro, one of the worst oppressors of all time. My biggest role models are successful black men, Kanye West, Donald Glover, etc. If black men and women are out here making millions, that just goes to show that there is equal opportunity.
_"Why would they?"_ is like asking why the sky is blue; it's just how it is. And anyone with sense knows that poverty plays a big role in criminal function. Crime is prevalent in the areas of the poor, while the rich are relatively left in peace and a large portion of the black population is very poor. We're right behind the American Natives. www.census.gov/prod/2013pubs/acsbr11-17.pdf Now, set aside poverty and add bad education, as well as the lack of a father figure or parental force. What does that usually lead to? Children with no ambition or sense of direction and twenty fours to waste. An idle body can fall prey to many of the illusions gangs put out, such as money, influence, etc. The rest is history.
_"There are no companies, educational institutions or public organizations in America or anywhere else in the West that _*_openly_*_ discriminates against black people like they do against white people."_ Of course they don't openly discriminate! In this era, the last thing a brand wants to be labeled as is racist towards people of color. I'm not saying it's right to openly discriminate against white people, but they are able to get away with that for whatever reason and not lose face.
_"Poor white boys are now the least likely to get an education in the UK."_ Is that where you're from? 'Cause if that's how it is for you guys, I'm truly sorry. Over here in the US, it's nothing of the sort. Black women are making strides as most likely to go on to college, but that doesn't mean they won't face any backlash or criticism once the job process begins. Of course, with this era of political correctness, plus diversity quotas companies have to meet, they probably won't turn them down as often as they used to.
You're still missing the overall point that a bill had to be introduced for us to get on our feet. If they hadn't forced the companies to give us jobs or help us, we'd be stuck in mud. And for some, it still isn't enough.
I never said I was offended by white people saying bruh; I honestly don't care. And you still fail to mention an example of white culture. What, we speak English so that's yours? Oh please, you don't own a language. And if you look at history, English itself is a stolen language, words from Latin, Spanish, French, German. The whole language is an orphaned child unsure of its family.
Take your statistics and shove it. Because white people are more likely to be killed by police, I should fold my hands and smile? Hey! I'm black! That means I'm safe, right? Didn't think so. And because black people are more likely to kill black people I should look at my own race with an eye of contempt? That's irrational and frankly goes against nature. You look to your own with suspicion than outsiders. It's not racism, it's life.
A sheep can't be in the presence of a wolf and feel safe, but amongst other sheep, it'll relax.
Fucking destroyed with logic.
"Massachusetts rapper Joyner Lucas went viral earlier this month with “I’m Not Racist,” a two-part, hookless song rapped from the perspectives of a racist, Trump-supporting white man and a black man respectively." Directly from the description. This is a left leaning channel and they clearly edited to fit their agenda and their audience. If my post gets taken down atleast I helped some of you out.
Easy W how it should of been “Joyner Lucas, a clearly racist rapper, went viral with ‘I’m not racist’ a song rapped from the perspectives of a racist white man and an equally racist black man”
Tom Marriott how is he rasict and that guy is a trump supporter
Easy W Are you just figuring out this is a left leaning channel? Lol they have been hating on white people forever
Tom Marriott The black man in the song isn’t referee to as Joyner himself. It’s about two equally racist people tryna find a connect and get passed the racism. bari
Tom Marriott how is Joyner racist? He’s just doing a song on both perspectives of two different sides

this song is modern poetry srsly.
brilliant interpretation of social conflicts
He's literally describing the conflict. Not much of an interpretation.
^ this song is not saying anything he just stated a bunch of stereotypes of white and black people and said we shouldn’t fight at the end. Nice
Hung Lo star spangled banner is describing the flag but it's still poetry tho?

Daniela Cruz I do every time I get pulled over because all these police are not here for the people’s protection no more and they do fucked up and unjust things to people. The only people who we should be fucking with is not our brothers but it’s the damn police and corrupt individuals letting it all happen bc I believe the government wants us divided and that’s why we’re falling but we’re all people and united we stand and there is way way more of us ordinary people than the government and we need to rise and stop the issue and stop the continuance or racism between men and women that’s pushed on to us and situations manipulated by the media. We the people are oppressed by own government and that’s not cool
zack guyette if the fucking police were gone think about it. The media is evil and makes a guy pulling a gun and shooting at a cop but the cop having better aim seem bad.

Why y'all hating on Joyner..... Lets appreciate that his music actually has a message unlike most new rappers.
Julian Carreon
It had a message before he made this video. Now it’s just a one sided ignorance fest.
@@hydrodudes5135 it still has a message
@@happycrimson this is what Joyner didn't want to happen. People choosing sides. This song was meant to show that all blacks doesn't do what the white man said. And not all whites do what the black man said.
Sure it has a message, but it's a pretty shit one tbh
bet genius cut alot of the controversial stuff. dont wanna trigger people now. need that money
aint joyner's fault. genius just aint gonna put a target on their back
Fawltytwit what did he cut out
Then what’s the point of making the vid on what the lyrics mean if we barely know what they mean by the end. But they prob cut out what they didn’t agree with
But the thing is......he said nothing to really offend white people lol he stayed within the lines, while trying to tell black people to conform to what's" acceptable"(far as dressing) then, pander to the stereotype that black fathers aren't around, then tell people they can't feel outrage about what happened to their ancestors, while Jewish people still black balling anyone that disrespect them(that aren't Jewish).
Lmao it's soo funny how y'all trying to act like this song wasn't one sided

Huh.. Hearing the song i loved it, because what i heard were two racist people saying some racist shit, and some truths too. i saw it as a "lets start to talk ffs", in a rather intelligent way. ..but hearing the explanation i fear i overestimated mr Lucas. He makes it sound like it is a stereotypical racist Trump voter against the stereotypical black man defending his kind and life style against the horrible white man. If that really is his angle, i'm a sad puppy. The apparently well balanced dialog was such a great conversation starter. In my mind one of the, most likely THE most, important conversation starters in a very long time.
Exactly
Agree 100%
Is it just me or is his angle racist as well?
JohnnyNr5 it's edited my guy, Genius removed a lot of shit from the interview
I have to ignore Joyner's explanation because nobody writes something like that without having some truth behind it? naw mean. like.. he couldn't have wrote the part coming from the white dude's side without knowing that those are the things that people like him (the white dude) actually care about. I'm going to assume that his "explanation" was just to save face with his audience that don't "get it", like those of us who have been listening to Joyner for a long time. Or those of us that aren't easily triggered (a lot of people I've shown the song to didn't want to listen to the entire thing, hearing this from Joyner would cause them to re-listen). And Marshedmellow above could be onto something, but if they portrayed Joyner in a way that he didn't want them to, he'd say something about it. Let's wait for that. Until then.. I'm not going to hold this against him.
People need to hear this again in 2020

Alex N. Sure you racist fuck.
So ignorant
I actually thought he was going to explain this differently, like both sides are right but also wrong
I'm also amazed how he managed to misinterpret his own song. Both sides had good points and extremes.
That's what I thought after hearing the first verse, but after listening to the second verse, it was pretty obvious that it's just another ignorant 'woke' person. I decided to watch the video because I was hoping I was wrong. I was right. Although, he did seem to give credit to the line about rap glamorizing crime.
That's what I always took from the song. I always felt like both sides said some shit that was definitely true but also said some shit that was just complete ignorance. I felt like that was Joyner's way of showing us how we're both acting stupid in the same way and that there are problems on both sides. But I guess not? Venom Stains is completely correct in the sense that it seems Joyner has somehow misinterpreted his own song.
I feel like he does but they cut out a lot of the lyrics
No, the white side definitely states hard facts. There are many black fathers out there who are simply lazy and would rather fuck around gang banging and shit than spend time caring for their children. On the other hand, white people definitely blow it way out of proportion and think just because someone skin is darker, they are automatically susceptible to these types of trends regardless of how they may have been raised or what type of influence has been in their life. The white side of this song definitely displays many traits of white supremacy without a doubt, but don't act like the black side of the song didn't say racist shit too.
i wanted to say one thing to you that...

kenneth felisilda but is it this man was so ignorant about Trump supporters and I don't even like Trump. what I saw in the music video was both sides telling facts about white people and black people. telling each other in the heated debate to tell what the other thinks about the other man. but this artist did not see what most people saw in this video and it's a damn shame. He's definitely ignorant and I'm black.

True
Hip hop is not the problem. It’s the culture surrounding the person that ends up doing the wrong things. Black and white kids in nice areas are getting really good grades and being successful but they’re still listening to hip hop. Music doesn’t just magically hypnotize kids, the culture does.
holyshit you're the first person i see to bring up actual CULTURE as the main issue rather than just race, i applaud you for that, you seem to be one of the few who understands that.
caleb greenwood If you have no goals in life, no one who believes in you, your only escape might be music. White's have parents and other people who they admire, so music isnt their only get-go
caleb greenwood 3 ways to program the subconscious mind. Symbols, trauma and repetition. So listening to these moron songs they have now a days when you really look around people are getting slower and dumber and look at how young kids are in school music is very effective because it plays a huge part of the culture and the brain washing. Hip hop these days isnt the same. Sometimes I feel stupid when im actually listening to what they are saying yet my son likes the shit.

Can you guys tell me where all lives matter originated and how it started, you dont get to hear a lot about that in germany, i feel like that passed me.
Matti Keller we say black lives matter to protest the injustice that is being done to African Americans and white people will say it to protest our protest
It’s not really a protest to your protest unless you’re saying, “white lives matter.”
Fucking THIS^. Can we just say HUMAN LIVES MATTER? Its not a protest. Its inclusion...which is the point of yelling black lives matter to begin with, right? So you included and treated equally.
But no other races can make that statement, right?...just us blacks. Were not racist.
So many people missed the point of this song and I wish they would react to and see this video as well, I see lot of comments from mostly white people mad that it wasn't what they thought
The original didn't clearly take a side but obviously Joyner Lucas meant to which he should've communicated better in the song. In the song each side says stuff that is both true and false but I guess Lucas thought only what the black guy was saying was correct, despite the ending of the music video that promotes discourse and unity. So yeah, people should be mad after watching this
I'm not white*
Im white and im kinda upset because both white and black are correct but he was more focused on making it seem like the black guy was correct. Sorry if i offended anyone with this comment
The original definitely took a side, if you didn't pick up on that by the time the MAGA dude was talking about how he wasn't racist because a distantly non-related acquaintance has a black girlfriend, or how he really emphasizes the "-er" ending to the n-word after whining about kneeling for the anthem, then I don't know what to say. The MAGA guy was clearly a parody.

Jonzey no alien race
Love how in the description is says "A racist, trump supporting white man." but just "A black man" Real subtle there, Genius...
Probably has something to do with the fact that trump supporters more often openly take irrational or racist stances against the black community, while the black guy specifically dislikes people who take racist stances. This isn’t a fight between white people and black people, this is a fight between black people and racist people.
I swear you're the only educated person in these comments.
WillRodgerVEVO But some of "the racist's" stances aren't held by racists. Sure, some of the shit he said is venomous, but is that not how people feel with raw emotion? You look at ghettos, you look at the black populace, they have disproportional crime rates, murder rates, poverty, fatherless homes... those are serious issues that need addressing. Immigration is also a topic that brings out a lot of emotion, a lot of simple rhetoric like "kick the Mexicans out", not because they hate Mexicans or discriminate against them, but because they're against illegal immigration or want less immigration in general.
How are those views racist? Look, reality is most of the country isn't racist. But when you start tying the issues raised by regular people with an outright racist, you're killing any real dialogue that could be had because you can dismiss every argument they make with "you're racist".
I noticed that too. Complete fucking bias.
Idk why most people don't realize blacks can be just as racist as a kkk member.
@ WillRodgerVEVO so all those trump supporters that are black are also taking racist stances? oof.

Joyner Lucas had major balls to release this song. Him not sugar coating any of the lines is something people aren’t used to, and it’s also something we needed. He knew he would get hate for the way he presented the song, but he didn’t care. He knew the world needed this wake up call so he released the song. I love him for it
no bs he did not hold back 😭😭😭
You guys can’t really say his interpretation was wrong because he wrote the song and also this interview was probably cut a lot. We weren’t actually sitting at the table with him looking at his notes seeing what he actually meant from the song so chill tf down

Ye rii i was like yall dont know that
was this edited wrong or something? i thought the whole point of this video was to see both sides but it seems really one sided here
newgzee it's edited. Genius are a bunch of fucking cucks
Edited, you can tell that the editing cut him off.
nah i dont think so. I saw an interview where he basically said everything the "white guy" said in the song is 100% wrong and playing a racist bigot. And he said the "black guy" went easy on him so they could hug at the end.
It's actually even more 1 sided then this shows. Trust me i was so confused at first too hearing his meaning behind it. Literally the music video and song doesn't depict what his real meaning is at all.
They edited the white side out
what the fuck lol the song is NOT both sides. everything the white guy says is racist stereotyping garbage and the black guy is dismantling his argument piece by piece. i cant believe people listen to the white guys side and actually think it makes sense... if thats what you heard then you really are a racist
The lyics seem deep, but none of his explanations for the lyrics are.
Rodrigo Madrigal deep, dude. Deep.
I think he made a song with two standing points. In this video he just explained his one. That's what I believe happened at least.

I don't think that the black culture equals to sagging pants, grills, and ghetto ways of dressing. That's not what the "black culture" is about... Just like wearing expensive clothing from L.V., Gucci, or Polo has nothing to do with being white.
So when he says "I guess just being black is enough to die" right after speaking about all the ghetto b.s. is completely wrong in my opinion. Being black and dressing ghetto aren't one in the same, just like being white and being successful aren't one in the same.
We are all individuals that all make our own paths. We decide how we sound when we talk, we decide how we will dress, we decide how we will act... As individuals. Once every race understands that, there will be no racism. There will be people that are here to make a positive impact and vice versa.
Sam Valentine I agree same time round I do relate half that shit to black culture. I don't see that as a bad thing it is what it is but you are right.
Environment and culture normally dictates on how a person dresses and acts
Rather than culture its more of black stereotypes, but its true some if no most black people try to act that way
Wrong black culture doesn't exist period.
Sam Valentine 🤦🏿♀️ some of that stuff does have to do with black culture

Positive Kenny you sure about that
This just proves the point that this song is bias. This song is so overhyped it crazy. The breakdowns were shit he never took responsibility for the awful things blacks are doing and only verified the handful of white racist.this guy is an idiot
G
Malcom Scott “awful things blacks are doing”, but aren’t there awful things whites are doing too? Your statement was hypocritical af. He’s clearly not an idiot if he can make a hit out a current issue in today’s society.
People are so focused on race division the real issue is classism. There are people struggling all over regardless of skin colour
The real issue is classism built around racism. Hence black poverty filled neighborhoods and using blacks as a tool for whites to have control over not only them but middle/poor white americans
I'm sad. I bought a gun.
Evan11 Ummmm do you know what happened before when people tried to get rid of classes? It was socialism/communism, which both failed
Nah dog, those were failed experiments. THIS time it will work as intended. Trust me. Kappa.
Chase Richter Communism in Russia wasn’t even really an experiment. It just showed how communism doesn’t work. Socialism and communism assume that everyone is a perfect angel, which isn’t true
Release the full interview; this is far too edited. It really seems like he said a lot more than what was shown in this video. We already know the lyrics. Why would you release a video of him just repeating verbatim what he already said in the song? You didn’t let him explain the meaning.
Yes he dod ur just slow asf
