Ooops. I did it again. OK so i'm obsessed with the Lancia Delta Integrale. I love the styling and I love the handling. Having driven all the different variants of the fully endowed 16V machines, I’ve rounded on what I believe to the ultimate spec and decided to restore (!) a barn find dream car. And this one is a real belter!!
The Delta Integrale is fairly unique in that way that it tackles roads because it has a wheel at the extremity of each corner, there’s no overhang, making it incredibly well-planted. In its O.G. suspension configuration it also permits enough weight transfer to pitch the car in at extraordinary speed, without understeering off into the vegetation.
With my early model “16 valve” Delta, that trait of being able to point the car anywhere is really pronounced because of the narrower track suspension. It’s a proper little ASBO, ever eager to kick off - and the sound in the cabin is more raucous. And I love the seating position in the old school 90’s disco-tastic seats.
The Evo 2, which everyone raves about, has Recaro seats that sit higher in the cabin and my head rubs the ceiling, so even though the chair has more support you still feel like you’re riding on the car as opposed to sitting deep inside it (which I much prefer)
Step in the Evo 1.. it ticks all the boxes for me. It has the wider suspension and increased power of the Evo 2, with that mad boxey bodywork - but it retains the original seats. And the seats in this barn find are absolutely stunning - black leather with matching trim in the headliner. It reminds me of the Ferrari BB - an all-time classic for looks and Ferrari brawn.
So begins the journey of returning this little classic to its former glory. A lot of Evos I’ve driven have been heavily modified, especially the ones out of Japan on shortened shock absorbers with less travel and a stiffer ride. Totally unnecessary. The stiffer ride is deeply annoying on country roads and defies what makes the Delta handle so well in the first place: weight transfer. If the weight doesn’t shift around, you can’t steer the damn thing properly because you don’t get enough load on the outside wheel which is doing the work.
This Evo 1 is currently on it original shocks and springs and it glides like a bar of soap down a butter mountain. The car is well supported but it can roll. I’m at great pains to maintain that special original feeling and am hoping the shocks are salvageable. If they aren’t then I’ll be working tirelessly to find a modern version that matches the original.
Despite my moaning against over-tuning… I’m going to tune the engine a little bit. Just some extra pepper to raise the bhp to around 270bhp which is a fairly sweet spot for this 2.0 motor. And with the Evo 1 it’s easier to do because it uses a larger Garrett turbo than the one in the Evo 2, which also has to contend with a catalytic converter.
It’s going to take some time and I’m delighted to be supported on this project by Tanc Barratt who has forgotten more about these cars than I will never know. As you’ll soon discover, his team of artisans are laser-focused on restoring every detail of the Delta and it’s going to be a special process.. so long as the car behaves itself and by that I mean doesn’t turn out to be a rusted out box of frogs 😉

Loving the Lancia! What would you like to see me do with this car? 👇

Like to se some tarmac grip driving mods and that you do some euro hillclimb comps 😎
Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
I would keep it original or at least ensure the mods are reversible.
Add some power. Keep it as original as you feel necessary. Love the color and sunroof.
I would like U to compare it to Mitsu EVO's 6 > 9 ^^
not so much the power but handling & fun factor ^^
OEM plus and enjoy it
hell yes, Ben!
Glad you like it buddy!
I have an Integrale available. Just saying, also a proper Ralli//Art Galant VR4.
After the P1, it would be awesome to see you tackle some Group B goodness 😉
@@richa7263 I threw a GrB quattro off a cliff, with me and my codriver in it. We survived, quattro not so much.
@@moosesamli4569on the list of “things to do when bored”, how did that make your list?
To think that this man has been the silent actor of Top Gear for soo many years, even though he has so much presence as a host himself seems to have been such a waste.
To see you flourish as a host is so awesome. You're doing awesome Ben!
Ben, I know you'll never see this but goddamn you take to presenting so naturally. Something that may seem as innocuous as talking in front of a camera is actually deceptively daunting and yet Ben pulls it off like such a natural. So massively impressed with you. I couldn't hit the proverbial "like and subscribe" any faster.
He spent a long while saying nothing
I also like down to earth presenters without egos.
thank you although if you saw the behind the scenes there's enough swearing to make a sailor blush when my mouth doesn't do what it's told to do LOL :)
As an italian, every time I see a video about Lancia and the people loving them, my eyes tear a bit. I return to the time where I was a little child getting to know all this new motorsport categories and after F1, I discovered rally and the Lancia Delta Integrale was one of the first rally cars I discovered and loved it ever since. I wish you the best with this car and enjoy every single second with it.
thank you - this was a golden era but Italian style never goes out of fashion !!
Not an Italian, but I'm a Dutchman with a soft spot for Lancia. My first car was a Beta Trevi 2000 ie. Wonderful to drive (if and when everything worked, but unfortunately, it was a tad unreliable). My fantasy dream garage would include a Thema 8.32, a Delta Integrale, a Fulvia Coupe and an Aurelia GT.
I've a soft spot for most Italian brands they simply have qualities many others don't . Haven't had a Lancia only a few lairy Fiats but the best small hot hatch for drivers was the Uno turbo ie ..these days it's the 595 Abarth
Please please tell me this is going to be a full on series of videos, watching this absolute beast getting restored back to pure awesomeness. 👍😁
I really like the way you talk about the experience of driving. You describe the car’s characteristics so well. Great looking car by the way, you found a very good one.
Thank you I'm glad that came through - these little beasts ride so well
I lived in Arganil from 1989 to 1992, Lancia came to do the Recce and then destroyed all others. The stages were hard and twisted but the Deltas absolutely dominated. The 4WD was a terrific machine, the Integrales that followed were monsters.
One and half minutes in and this channel has exceeded my expectations. I'm really glad I subscribed!
(who knew everyones favourite racing driver is also an excellent presenter)
I set the entry bar as low as possible - thanks for watching!
My old Integrale comes into view @2:15 M665 GGH which I bought in 2000 - a "Dealers Collection" which was one if the last 170 odd cars made fir Europe. A one lady owner car from Switzerland. Sold to the current owner in around 2005. It's still as nice as it was when I owned it.
Black is one of the best colours for that car shape. Well wear Ben, seriously envious 😄
You’re really doing this TH-cam thing right, Ben! I love how you respond to as many comments as possible, I’m sure that will get more difficult as you gain more subscribers but for now, I think its awesome! Congratulations on the new wheels, that thing looks like it’ll be a riot to drive!
It's a pleasure - Musk is building me a clone to keep up with everything :)
Ben taught myself and a few military colleagues how to drive very fast on UK roads.
The best course I ever did in my 25yr military career.
The guy is an unbelievable driver although he's utterly lacking the fear gene 😁
I used to work for the manufacturer (Fiat Auto UK) in the Integrale era, and was fortunate in my job that I got to drive these beasts around when they were new.
I had an early version, the HF 4WD and later an 8V. You described perfectly the way the car corners, slightly leant over and with the rear wheels digging in and powering the car through the bend. Also, the steering feel is sublime. I've driven quicker and more powerful FWD hatches like the Alfa Giulietta QV and they're just not as engaging. Well done for finding the Evo 1
Thanks for the info!
I worked as a photographer for a car magazine for more than 25 years and, among all the cars I was fortunate enough to drive, the Lancia Delta Integrale was, by far, the most exciting. An absolute stunner, with a brutal acceleration and an outstanding grip on the road. Basically, once you drive it, it automatically becomes your dream car.
Congratulations on your purchase, Ben!
Feeling just a little envious here, I'll have to admit... :)
An 8v still in our family with 9k on the clock all original allways a place in my heart
I don't know about everyone else
But this the sort of thing I love seeing Ben do
Appeals to all car nuts from 80s and 90s!
I am so jealous! These are becoming exceedingly rare cars in South Africa, would absolutely love one, been a favourite of mine since I was a kid. If only I could afford to restore one 😅
Edit: on a side note, I'm sure you've been told by many annoying Italians in the past, but Lancia is pronounced more like "Lunch -a", haha sorry I couldn't help myself.
I´ve never seen so much Delta´s at one place.
Fantastic
A man after my own heart! An Integrale! Keep the build honest and original. A few subtle ‘tweeks’ to tighten up performance and handling for modern roads otherwise keep her looking standard. She’s still quick enough compared to some modern hot hatches considering she’s 30 plus years old.
Great content Ben! You’re a presenter, driver, and all around entertaining bloke!
One of the best videos I’ve seen. Not just for the Delta, but for the presenter, the entertainment, the information. Ben really is a natural at this.
Absolutely brilliant to listen to you talk so eloquently about the dream car of my teenage years, the incredible Integrale.
Intergrales have always been in my top 3 garage wish list . The very fact the best Stig has them just makes me want one even more 🚘 🇮🇹 🐘
get one fast I think they will be heading to America
Please keep us updated with this Ben show us how it's coming along, Awesome cars deff rare sight these days excelent choice 🎯✌👍
yep we are filming the build.. stage 2 is looking good
Brilliant quote Ben. ‘More like a super car in a hatches clothing’.
‘If Ferrari made a hot hatch this would be it’.
Tank Barrett is an absolute legend and so humble.
You're on a winner there with the EVO1.
I've had an 8v, EVO1 & EVO2; the 8v was brutal, the EVO1 is great fun, whilst the EVO 2 (great to look at, just not drive) was just dull.
A couple tweaks to bring the power up to the high 200's and you'll have smiles every time you drive the thing.
Congrats, and I look forward to following the refresh.
The comparison with the Yaris GR is a good one. Incredible Lancia got it so right 30 years earlier. Still, they have incredible engineering heritage. My Fulvias were a hoot and pre dated any of the Golfs and Alfa Suds with their light, powerful FWD designs. They competed with Mini Coopers but were way better engineered. Going further back, the Aurelia was beautiful and was a V6 with a transaxle. But for me, the narrow V4 Lancia Fulvias were the jewel in Lancia’s crown and well before Fiat took them over. Fiat eventually killed those off . Still, the Integrale engine dates back to the Fiat 124! And it’s a brilliant design
Never driven one will have to try it
I am an American who generally loves Japanese cars, the RWD/AWD classic harches and rally legends draw me in. Lancia being the big one, but the R5 Turbo and Clio V6 also being intriguing. I love AWD, but a RWD hatch with 300+ hp sounds so insane to drive, especially if rear mid engined lol.
Great video Ben. 👍🏻😀
These short shows are great . And this car will turn out a treat . Thanks Ben
I have this incredible Memory of being able to sit in an Evo in the 90's. I live in the Rhondda Valleys and very close to the starting point of the wrc track here I was used to seeing endless rally cars building up to it but one night just walking home an absolutely incredible White with full Martini livery pulled up and I distinctly remember being confused as it was LHD and the driver was actually right there winding his window down, It was some relatively young Italian guy on his own lost looking for the start of the track It was raining and he had a map and to my delight he was like jump in it was fully stripped out full roll cage bucket seats it was incredible but clearly not used for rallying it was in immaculate condition and I could not believe what was happening I just remember showing him exactly where to go on the map and then just saying is this your car? and he said yes and I smiled and said this is incredible and I just kinda made sure he was clear on directions because I was kinda worried about him being lost in the valleys on his own in this car lol.
I remember those Martini livery cars going crazy at Sintra mountain in Portugal....and the crowd going nuts! Gezzzz....
Some people say he’s never driven an Italian car and that he never even met Chris Evans… All we know
Which one? The presenter or Captain America?
🙏 Pained many fans to see how they neglected some of these Italian Masterpieces : Lancia Delta Integrale ... Thank You So Much Master Ben for taking Good Care of your Lancia Delta Integrale! Many Happy Good Blessings in Return to Master Ben! 🌷🌿🌏💜🕊🇬🇧🇮🇹
Congrats to this beauty Ben! What a great brand Lancia once was, and what a shame what became of it…. Keep this beauty alive! It‘s automotive heritage ❤
I was hooked by your presentation in an instant. It's clear you're passionate and experienced in what you love doing. Can't wait to see how the Evo 1 progresses❤
Ben, I’m just a bloke on the other side of the Atlantic but I’m appreciating your video. These cars are too mysterious for us since we never had the opportunity to see them on the road. Best wishes on your TH-cam channel.
Glad you enjoyed it! Welcome alone man.
I noticed the Tipo Sedicivalvole in the background, now thats a rare car.
The Delta Integrale, the Statos, the 037. Clarkson was right, Lancia is the greatest car company nobody's ever heard of. I love in Alasja, and have always wanted one ever since ive seen Too Gear show the first one
that cozy feeling of knowing Stig likes the same cars tells me I got good taste
I swapped a 3 litre S Capri and a Fiat 131 Mirafiori Sport for an 8 valve Delta.
The caryard in Derby had had it for 3 months with little interest, due to it being lefthand drive.
Sold it before moving to NZ.
Easily the best car I'd owned at that point and on a par with my new acquisition, a 1989 ST185 Celica.
When i was young, i prefer the Celica more. Today, the Toyota has gone, but the Lancia is still alive. Amazing Car!!!
Dear Mr. Collins, this channel is awesome! I am 2 episodes in and I am *HOOKED* (..and yes, as far as the Integrale, it is a good thing that it's got an engine lol)
Wow, thank you!
Good to see folks enjoying old rigs.
I had 5 Lancia's until they were no more. My Dedra Turbo had the 8V Integrale engine. A true wolf in sheeps clothing.
I’m going to tell everyone THE Stig now owns two of the cars I too owned and loved 20 years ago. White Integrale 16v and a Monza Red Evo1.
The windscreen resonates and rubs away the paint allowing for water ingress. Can’t wait to see what you do with it.
I remember in 2007 seeing evos going for 7k lucky enough to have seen them rallying from group B s4 to last round in 1992 rac.
So glad we decided to buy a Evo 1 for our collection, it’s definitely the better drivers car. We’ve got a Rosso Monza with the same Black leather interior and no sunroof. It’s currently wrapped in White with a Martini Livery.
Great content! Happy to have "rediscovered" my favorite "tame racing driver!"
Excellent choice Ben 👍👍👍
Any rally car 70s on and you’ve got me as a captive audience. WRC was my obsession growing up.
I’ve been lucky to navigate for a friend who has a 2021 Porsche GT3 in the Adelaide Rally Porsche club tour (Australia) @55yrs old
Mate you're just a natural. Quickest and easiest sub and like for a long time.
What I most look forward to is seeing you drive it hard (the way it's meant to be) and explaining why/how its factory configuration/settings are the correct ones
Thanks for the amazing video! Appreciated mate!
Sharp! Well done Ben
Brilliant review Ben Loved it
Great choice. Love it. I look forward to seeing the progress
Some say he has a passion for little french rally cars. :)
Congrats Ben! Awesome find! Can't wait to see more of it and enjoy it!

Can't wait to see the updates and progress.
Well done Ben you have nailed it and I can’t wait to see you drive this queen of the road. 👍👍👍
So wonderful to see !
That car is stunning I cant wait to see more!
Love the video and the manner in which it was presented. Lovely insight in these more and more popular cars. I hope that you will do a series of videos on the rebuild of the car.
Excellent, one of the all time great "must have" cars. I cannot wait to watch the progress.
Love your channel, Ben! You're a natural presenter. I hope you get stinking rich doing this. Can't wait for more!
Thanks so much!
I remember the Audi during my apprenticeship one of my instructors had one and would drive me over the Autobahn. The 16v integrale I would see often in Germany. Italians loved em.
Great cars, ready sod with two of them ... looking forward to the rebuild and finished job
Definitely a build to look forward to. Can't wait for the next episode. Cheers Ben 👍
Love the stance from the front
Congratulations 🎉 nice toy!! 😎👍🏻
Well done Ben!
Nice to hear insight from an actual racing driver. Thanks for all the years of fun on TG
Can’t wait to see this car come together, great video 👍
One of the best car reviews to-date, absolutely loved it. Such a natural, personable, technical and warm. Really looking forward to watching this progress.
Very NICE!!..Love the old Lancias especially the Delta integrale
What a great starting point for a project, good examples these cars are becoming increasingly rare, can’t wait to see this take shape.
fantastic car... been from Ireland have only ever seen two in the flesh, incredible machine to see up close.... looking forward to seeing the end result here, good stuff ben.
My favorite rally car! Love it
As one of the few integrale owners in the states this is terrific any content on them is welcome but to have your talent as well as tanc barrett we are all looking forward to this build / restoration. Thank you keep up the great work.
Working on it!
Maravilha Stig!!!!! Can't wait to see her finished! Abraço de Lisboa!
two of my friends owned 1 each in the 90's, the best times ever in cars, we went everywhere, many crazy trip to europe and the ring, the looks we used to get, like we were rockstars, actually were a bunch of welders and truck drivers :)
Feel like a rockstar driving it!
Nostalgia the Stig, great channel look forward to this rebuild.
Great new channel, loving the Lancia even more! Keep it stock... 👍🇬🇧
I did grew up on your character. Thanks to you im into cars. Glad for you🎉🎉🎉
Ben, your growing Lancia collection has a great new addition. I'm looking forward to future updates...
Really look forward to this project Ben .. for a car that's nearly what ? 30 years old that evolution 1 looks absolutely beautiful .. every angle .... looks like you got a really good one can't wait to see the end product 😀 👍 👌
Nice one Ben, all that heritage at your foot and a simple tune to let it flow more power on a nice twisty country lane.
I'm looking forward to this! There are very few of these in Australia and it's a pleasure to see one on the rare occasion. Being black is very unique. Loving your content. The P34 drive was just awesome too. Love your work.
Super cool Ben!
Another great insight into what it’s like to drive these great little pocket rockets ! What an awesome find ! Fingers crossed when you dig deeper into the chassis you only find minor repairs! Also with these cars and any other classic come to think of it it’s most important to have all the box sections injected with the best rust proofing wax for a few hundred pounds once the repairs have been done and it’s re-painted ! I do hope you have protected your amazing 16v !!! Keep up the great work Ben with more excellent content ! 👍🏽
hell yeah ben, one of my all time dream cars. lancia deserves to come back in its former glory!!!
If BBC or Amazon were smart they would give Ben his own car show. He is an excellent presenter and is a gentelmen and a scholar. Plus he is and always will be the Stig! Godspeed Sir.
Please document your journey with this, my favourite car of all time. I am so jealous!
