Great to see you working on a 7 1/4 narrow gauge. I'm hoping to do some maintenance on mine this winter.

That little thing pulls at least 600kg of just people ! Amazing power of steam!

Yet another fascinating video. Thanks for producing it Mr. Appleton.

Where I live, miniature-steam scale boilers are typically NOT covered by provincial technical requirements that require certification. Those rules "kick in" when the boiler has a capacity of more than 20L. Having said THAT, most live-steam clubs still require test documentation before you're allowed to run your steam devices at their sites...

It is a real shame that you were put off by boiler making. Good old KN Harris. Boiler making can be very exciting. I used to be terrified of roaring gas burners. Not any more. Just got to have a go! Copper all the way!

Yes, I prefer Copper boilers every time.

Can I ask Keith, how do injectors go on as I thought they needed cold water to run? If a locomotive has a saddle tank isn’t the water warm? 😊

I usually pipe them from an external water supply in the riding truck . . . .

This sounds similar to aircraft parts as far as the materials is concerned. IE no unknown material permitted.

thats not exactly true ... no specifications of a material unknown ... you can create a new alloy and use it BUT you must have its complete set of properties including testing to failure ...

i do hope there is a cheap way to certify the boiler ... my experience ... like with a car engine ... let the trained person do the work ... my life is worth the cost

      It has since been tested . . . . .

Do you need boiler certificates for the Mamod engines?

    • @keithappleton

No. They are small toys with Brass boilers that run at a very low steam pressure.
