    Why as a brown skin 46 yr woman in 2019 sitting at work fighting tears listening to this song..... Why... Because music and true story telling transcends race, culture and time.....I often listen this song IT'S SO POWERFUL

      Listen to the original by Bobbie Gentry, she wrote it and Ode To Billie Joe. She brings that Mississippi poverty to life. Miss Reba is the only cover of Fancy that carries the heartache.

      Keenan Hunt I have loved that song since Vickie Lawerence released it. There’s a video of them doing it together and talking about the song. I hate that happened to your Mom, women were treated so differently back then. I’d like to believe in today’s society we wouldn’t let a girl or any kid be railroaded. So glad she was able to get your siblings back, that was a major accomplishment for that time. Thank you for sharing I’ll think of you & your Mom whenever I hear the song now.

    I remember being dragged to some karaoke night at some bar in New Hampshire back in the 90s. It was miserable. Then some middle aged woman got up, nothing special, and absolutely dropped the room with a version of this song. She absolutely belted it. Book, cover, etc.

    As a little girl growing up in the back of the trailer park this song was like a beacon of hope for me. I always told myself that I was "Fancy" and that I was gonna make it no matter how little I had. Although we never had roaches, only mice, there were many nights my mom went to bed hungry, crying herself to sleep over the stress....but some nights she would hold me and sing this song to me and at the end she would always promise to get us outta there..."one day Megan, one day we will have a real home." She worked so hard...multiple jobs at a time, everything from exterminator to secretary, but she finally did it. We moved when I was 13. She now owns her own 2 story, 3 bedroom home and Im 33 with my own home thats so big I dont know what to do with all this space. My 3 kids will never be able to relate to what I went threw growing up and thats the thing I am most proud of today but I still blast Reba on cleaning days and sometimes they catch me shedding a few tears as it plays but I will never tire of Rebas stunning voice and storytelling lyrics. 🥰 Shoutout to all the other little girls who grew up relating way too closely to Fancy ❤

    As an orphan this song makes me cry, living in London making my dreams come true as an artist. It’s surreal. I’ll say this I’ve done things and accomplished more than I ever had dreamed at 25, in spite of some very humble beginnings. Remain fancy if you wish and are reading this - because one thing is for *certain* - the wheels of fate, they DO be turning!

      Where they abusive, like lock you in a room with a chain and no lights, dinner once a week and daddy only comes in to shove something in you type of abuse or daddy whooped you a few times when you threatened him and stole beer. Because having seen the former grow up and live very successful lives despite what I described, it makes me think the later like to use their discipline and rude mamas/daddys as an excuse for why their lives turned out shit. If youre parents were togther and chose to keep you in your home, youre already doing better than literally %50 of people born.

    The incredible thing is that there are so many mothers and daughters who can relate to this song. It's probably what makes it so popular. It's how it was in rural and poor America during trying times. I'm sure the mommas weren't proud of it, but they just wanted a better life for their babies. Sad....but, some....survived and even thrived.

    I grew up in a lower middle class, always on the verge of being super poor. This song resonates with me. I’m lucky to met my husband to be when young and get the hell out of there. I’m not rich now but higher middle class, and now I have privileges I thought I’d never have. Once in awhile I’ll drive by the house I grew up in and cry. Boy those were hard times. I feel ya Fancy.

    This is a great song, musically. But the story it tells is extraordinary. I am not a big fan of Reba McEntire, but the times when I am listening to Country music stations, and this song comes on, I always stop what I am doing and listen carefully to the lyrics. This is the first time I have seen this video (watching 2024-03-14), so now, these are the images that will be flowing through my head the next time it comes on the radio.

Even sung badly, it was amazing to me, and I immediately looked it up. I’m not a country fan but this might just turn me country. I have been listening to it nonstop for the last week trying to learn it so I can sing it karaoke, but it’s gonna take a while to even catch a shimmer of the gloriousness that is Reba McEntire. As a mom to two girls, 5 and 15, I couldn't imagine doing this to them. Unfortunately, there was a time in history where people would sell their kids when they couldn't afford them, hoping that they would have a better life elsewhere. Her mom was dying and she knew the state would take care of her little one. But being 18, fancy would just be alone and lost with no one to help her. This is what her mom knew would almost guarantee a cushy life, and it did. Escorting is still huge money today. 🤷‍♀️

    All my life, I related to this song. For years, I believed it was a story befitting my mother and her mother, but now that I'm grown up for myself, I realize it fits myself and my mother even more. On New Years Eve, my mother (who is severely mentally ill) attempted to harm me and/or herself with a firearm. We struggled and I was able to disarm her, tossing it outside to get it away from her. While Fancy tells the story of her mother doing whatever she could to get her daughter to a better place... my mother has always done her best to destroy my life or tear me down. I think this will be the last time I'll see my mama for a long time, if ever again. All I can do is look forward now and try to build something better down a new path I've never known. Reba, thank you for making such beautiful music. It gives women like me a voice and the strength to carry on in such a cruel, cold world at times. Sometimes, it's the only thing that keeps us here at all.

    This woman can sing. They just don't make em like they used to. :( And what a song she's singing! This is one of the few where I can definitely say I like it better than the original, in this case _much_ better. Reba took a good song, sung pretty well, and made it her own, turned it into a powerhouse that people still know every word to - and every nuance in the way she sings it - 20 years later. Hell yes Reba.

    I used to live right besides Reba's ranch in Gallatin, Tennessee.. until she sold & moved just a few yrs back. But for my entire life I was right next door! The coolest part I remember to this day was that, In the winter the leaves would fall & you could see her ranch how big & beautiful it was & every so often you'd catch a view of her out at her lovely barn..(Which was closer to the main road & the side where I lived, I have moved now myself..) But at rare times you could catch a glimpse of her with her beautiful horses. Bringing them out in the snow, or just so they could get some of that magical fresh snowy Tennessee air!.. Her main barn was as big as my house but it was a beautiful house, barn, view, & ranch all together! I envied it my entire life! But it was enough for my mother(also a huge Reba fan) & myself to just catch the rare view of Miss Reba through the bare winter trees when going to our mailbox! Memories of my childhood like that, are irreplaceable, & I'll never forget. & unfortunately Miss Reba will never know about.. But it was all good enough for me just to be so close, yet so far away. But it did make me feel so close to her & her life as well! (& Miss Reba was a huge part of my life growing up and to this day, she always brought my family together. During all of the holiday seasons, disagreements or hard times, & of course all the GREAT times too. I remember singin, dancin & laughin. Or singing along in my daddy's truck, or after church on Sundays every week.. my favorite being after church on a sunny day in the fields picnicking behind my home! So for my family & myself it was such a true honor being anywhere close to a true classy lady as herself! To this day.. Miss Dolly Parton & Miss Reba McIntyre, Miss Faith Hill & Miss Shania Twain, are the Legendary, Classy, Ladies that keep the heart of Country Music alive! Country Music is the back bone of the south & these Hardworking, Strong, Classy, selfless women make sure to keep that tradition alive everyday! Happy holidays Reba! & to the Tennessee readers, & to all the Country Music lovers out there! ❄️☃️🎅🏼🎄❄️ -Katelyn Dixon

    As a mother your only choice is to protect your children. Sometimes the only way of keeping them alive is to send them out on their own. Its an unfair decision for anyone, but especially for a real mother. She clutches the baby as she sends her daughter away, shes probably seeing the older girl as a baby, and its tearing her apart to send her baby into that awful situation, but she knows if she doesnt do something then they will all die from poverty. And by the time the girl got on her feet, it was too late to save her mom. Only a real mother can make that kind of sacrifice. Sadly there arent many real mothers or fathers in this world. "If you want out, well its up to you" she even explains it, this is your way out. I cant keep going, but you have to.

    Every time I hear this song I can't help but put myself into Fancy's shoes and feel the hurt and betrayal that must have gone through her heart as a young girl being turned out by her mother, just the feeling of absolute betrayal must be decastating, even though in the end 15 years later she realizes her mother must have also betrayed herself with her choice, Fancy knows her mother did the only thing she could to give her a chance to make her own life.

    • @Harry.Dresden
      @Harry.Dresden 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Adversely i also put myself into the mother's shoes, the stuggle with herself that she must have fought to put her daughter into such a world, even if it was the only choice she had she must have felt wretched having to do so, the pain these two women face in this song is more than most could ever bear to deal with, and just getting a glimpse at this pain as listeners is what tryly made this song as famous as it is. We can only guess as to the hardships faced, especially considering that during the time period this song is set in (40s-ish) women had very little in terms of what they could do with their lives, so sadly the events of this song occurred more often than we would like to think, and most of those tales did not have the happy ending that this song's heroine does. This kind of music is what makes me feel alive, a story of emotion, not just sex drugs and rock n roll (or in todays case rap n dubstep) I do not mean to insult anyone's musical preferences, I just felt the need to establish how this song makes me feel when I hear it, what I go through mentally when debating the lyrics within my own mind, and to hear the emotion behind Reba's voice as she goes from singing as if she were an unsure 18 year old frightened girl to belting out the lyrics as an angry 33 year old woman who is jaded with the world and how it works. Sorry for taking up so much space on the somments page, I just needed the catharsis of getting this out there.

      My single mother raised four girls; she worked very hard long hours to keep a roof over our heads. She gave us unconditional love, home cooking so we had food on the table ( sometimes she went hungry so me and my three sisters would have enough); she sacrificed a lot. And, she did it without putting any of us out (No injury intended). When we were old enough, we worked baby sitting jobs, after school jobs and summer jobs to help out with things we needed. My mother was an excellent seamstress, and sometimes she would make us some clothes, but mostly we bought them locally. It all depends on your family values. I'm grateful that our lives were spared the harsh realities of this song. Again, no injury intended.

    As a sex worker myself, this song is heavy. So, so heavy. I cry my eyes out every time I liten to it. I didn't grow up in a shack. I grew up in an abusive home. And my life turned around the day I walked into a strip club and asked for a job. Now I'm away from that abusive family.
    Just be nice to the gentlemen and they'll be nice to you indeed.

I am just glad that you are safe now I too once lived in abuse so yes it is never something that you want to stay in I’m glad that you found a way out!

      It's a song about a mother doing what she had to do give her child a slim chance to avoid slavery in all but name. The daughter learned early as so many if us do that help usually comes with a price. Fancy paid the price of survival. Anyone condems her for that is just an asswipe.

    • @chubbybunny6975
      @chubbybunny6975 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@DirtyPrancing It's not romanticized. Every person I see finding out someone's a prostitute or escort says "poor girl", assuming every woman that does it had no choice. Some women genuinely love doing it because it's fun and they get to meet a lot of people and learn about them.
      If a woman is getting regular health-checks to make sure she's clean, and enjoys giving/having orgasms for a living, who are we to judge? Fuck if I had the body confidence I'd do it, it sounds like it can be a lot of fun

I feel better knowing I'm not the only one that cries every time I hear this song. idk why that is either... it just chokes me up so badly and tears stream down my face. I didn't grow up poor either. Actually, my parents are very wealthy and we always lived in 3 story houses. I think I cry bc it's just so touching I can feel the emotion. However, I do prefer Bobbie Gentry's version over anyones.

    It's a song that tells a story! A part of history. A part of history that is seldom recognized. It's not a part of history for one race but rather for many it is a way of surviving... its also not as far back in our history as people would like to believe. Unfortunately, giving rights does not instantly change individuals' way that is taught from one generation to the next for survival. This story had a happy ending of coarse its a story... more than not reality is not what we WANT in fairytale... reality is real. Heck most of the similar stories in our history is not even about finding "wealthy" men... just a man was required. "Wealthy" was part of the fairytale that very few got! Sadly so many still do not understand that now there is another way and other options. It's not easy but not impossible, and it's easier than losing your sanity. For me, I can't wait for the day that all see that reality and stop letting others manipulate and control us with history, something that is no longer real! The only power that allows this history to be present today is us!
