People buy an AMG GT/S/C because they DONT want to look flash but they also don't want to be completely ignored. It's a perfect balance between supercar and sports car and it sounds better than just about anything else on the road. You buy it for yourself because you like driving, not for others to look at... Question answered!

Having driven a rented AMG GTS two years ago on the Run To Monaco event I was so impressed how it stacked up on every measure to the Lambos, Mclarens, Ferraris & Porsches on the trip. Understated by comparison but every bit as supple in handling and overall drivability. It kept up with the other nutters easily, had by far the best exhaust note.....no music was required on the entire 1,000km trip, just open windows. Since then I have rented a couple more in the UK and this weekend I have had a GTC, the first time I've driven the roadster. Yesterday 5am departure from Putney to Heathrow for a pickup, roof off, seat & neck heaters on......I fell deeply in love. If you can afford one.....buy one.....I think I'll make the plunge now.....otherwise do yourself a favour, rent one for a weekend. There will be no regrets. Oh, and don't bother in any other driving mode than Sport+, so much fun with your clothes on.

really love these cars and still feel it is exciting to see them on the street they are much more rare than the porsche in the us.
Mercedes never aimed at competing with Ferrari's or McLarens from a rarity perspective. It is a mass producer and never tried to be anything else. And by the way, I have yet to see a GTC / GTR on the street, so yes, I would be in awe if I saw one.

Great video! Just sharing my POV What I like is that the next car will not look the same at all (i.e. SLR, then SLS, then AMG GT), while a 911 and R8 look always the same, just slightly improved. But then after a year, you know that there is a new one already, so you're not the coolest kid in town. But you're still the coolest in an SLS or SLR and even more so in an SLR, because it does not exist anymore.
Drove a GTS on Sunday and loved it. Tempted to go for the GTC though. The noise was intoxicating. The dealer said a coupe is about an 18month wait from the factory though.
There are literally so many 911s in my town that I can't drive 5 minutes without seeing one. I have the only GT Roadster.

Well, the AMG GT series is designed to compete against the 911 and F-Type directly. They were never designed to be ultra-rare supercars. They were designed to be usable, fun, daily-drivable sportscars. Moving up a level, the AMG GTR, 911 Turbo S, 911 GT3 RS, Corvette Z06, and F-Type SVR are super sportscars, that is, sports cars that have supercar performance (either on road, on track, or both). But, it's important for any potential consumer to understand they will never be supercars, and they were never designed to be.
There are plenty of entry-level supercars. The 570S/570GT, R8, etc. But, not everyone is ready to make the adjustment in lifestyle that is necessary to daily one of those cars (smaller trunk space, less interior space, etc.). Personally, I like sports cars and super sports cars over entry-level supercars, but they all ave their pla.ce

Yes, and the GT3 RS and Turbo S are in the same exact segment. They are both super sportscars that have different target audiences (track weapon vs. road/drag racing weapon). But, they occupy the same space. But, with regards to the AMG GTR, I'd say it splits the GT3 RS and Turbo S. As someone who was there at the launch of the AMG GTR, I distinctly remember Tobias Moers (the head of AMG) saying that the AMG GTR is a track weapon that can happily be driven everyday. It has a fat torque curve (much like the Turbo S) thanks to it's turbocharged engine, and I imagine it would be equally usable in both road and track conditions.
My close friend who's 21 just drove home today in 2018 AMG gtc. It will always be the best car I ever seen
Your review kinda reminds me of an old top gear review of the BMW M5 E60. Jeremy Clarkson was also like '' meh..'' for the first bit. But then with the switch or click of a button the entire car transformed, and it became super duper awesome. You should do these review type of video's more often Sam! Congratulations in advance for the 15th!
Sport plus with middle damper setting is the sweet spot for U.K.! You wouldn't want race in that weather, the esp relaxes a lot!

It's very easy to do, Scotland is exceptionally pretty.
A big honking lump of an engine, all the luxuries you could want, and that sound. No confusion here.
Test drove an AMG GTS. It blew my mind! Compfy and relaxed when wanted, faster than expected and harder when wanted. I am currently in the market for a used GTC.
You can't say that the R8 is more exciting to see than the AMG GT? I think the R8 is too common which makes it a bit boring

I'm not talking about the engine, I'm only talking about the aesthetics. I pretty much see a R8 everyday in Stockholm. I know it's a crazy good car, and the V10 engine is insane
until very recently though the R8 was allwheeldrive so not quite the same type of car than this

Of the entire range, the GT C is the one to have. 95% of the GT R but more subtle.

Definitely agree I owned a Porsche and a Mercedes, they are different Mercedes is performance, quality and class and reliability. Porsche is design , handling and dynamics.
Porsche was a 2009 Cayenne riddled with poor design problems.
2014 MB Amg E63-S , Rock solid Built quality, reliability and safety wise.

This looks even better than its hard-top counterparts.
It's a lovely car snd the perfect one to go for in the AMG GT range. You can spec it up with the rear wheel steering too and a nice interior, so in many ways it's nicer than the GTR.

imo I think an AMG GT or some 911s (e.g. the GT3) is more cool and exciting to see than an FType
There are tons of F types around especially with them being 4 cylinder now
You have to love the AMG sound.

Great vid Sam. Definitely illustrates the oddness of the Mercedes GT range... If the engine is the same and you wanted to save money, you could just buy a used GT and get it tuned... specs suggest it's just the software between them (engine only) which is disappointing. I'm sure brakes and suspensions differ etc.

That’s not true. There is already an AMG GT C Coupé. I think it’s called the 50 anniversary edition. It also has the 557hp engine
I've owned a number of sports cars over the years; including Lotus and several Porsches. All fun to drive. However, the AMG GT is, on balance, an equal or better all round performer. Additionally, the fit and finish (exterior and interior) far exceeds Lotus and Porsche.
I don't know how an R8 is a stunner. The look has changed in the new model and it is too perfect to drive making it boring unless you want it for a daily driver. The GT S is a great car. I owned 2 and used it as a daily driver including in winter in Canada with snow tires. I like the GT C but it does have the appearance of the SL series from the front. Not sure if I will get it as there is zero trunk space with the convertible model.
Agree....first AMG GTC that has the outstanding combi of hooligan/cruiser/top down for sound!

Not a fan of all that satin chrome and silver inside the cockpit, and I agree, I’ve seen a few AMG GT cars on the road, and never thought OMG WOW, look! It does sound great though!

The GT-C is a car for people who have some maturity and don't feel the need to impress others with a shouty showy vehicle. The beauty and desire is in the subtleness.
Would you mind sharing how you get so many invites to drive these cars? Do you have to ask the dealers/companies for test drives or do they approach you because you are an influencer? Seems like a great experience! I would just like to know a little more of the behind-the-scenes of this process.

Happy with the choice? I’m between V10 coupe and GTC coupe - prefer the Audi engine, but Mercedes looks a lot better and I prefer the brand as well.

I like the AMG GT but like you I don't get the line up. I mean looking at the stats you put on screen.... why buy the GTR? The GTC is so close in performance unless you do a lot of track days (where I'd assume the GTR suspension would make it faster) is it really worth the extra cash over the GTC when the Coupe comes out? I don't think so personally. Slightly feels like Mercedes is shooting themselves in the foot.
Agreed! When you consider the fact that there may be a black series/updated GTR model in the works, getting the AMG GTR don't make much sense. The GTC specced properly with the rear wheel steering/AMG driver package/etc is very nearly as good as the GTR.

The best comparison for the AMG GT line might be the F-Type. It also comes as a coupé or cabriolet and it also has various power levels.

the cab design is far superior over the coupe as it already was the case with the SLS imho.
GTR has 585hp and can't hit the 200mph. WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH MODERN SUPERCARS!!
The midrange ones do seem somewhat puzzling. Odd that I see the appeal to the base and most exclusive model most. It doesn't seem progressive like it should be.
it is very progressive, you have the slow one, the gt (think Porsche Carrera), then the faster one of that, the gts (think Carrera s). then you have the one with the fancy suspension and cage and track focused, the Gtr (think gt3rs, then you have the slower, more road focused hardcore one, the gtc (think gt3)
Ian Pinder GTC is more like the turbo than the GT3 I think
