  • The thing about white privilege is that white people don’t see it. “White privilege” doesn’t mean your life hasn’t been hard, it simply means that your skin color isn’t one of the things making it harder.
This series is meant to share experiences of real people who have experienced racism and still experience it. The goal is to shine a light so that we ALL see it and take actionable steps to do something about it.

Teree’s parents moved the family out of Denver Public Schools when forced busing went into effect. The family moved to a very white school district.
She was in her early 20’s when she ‘bucked the system’. She joined the Army shortly the Women’s Army Corp was disbanded and all units were integrated with men. While in Signal School in Augusta Georgia, she met her husband Charles, who is African American, and it was 1980. They married in 1981, a mere year and a half after is was ‘made legal’ for them to do so.
Teree’s education on ‘race relations’ started at that time. She experienced eye-opening events. She began to really understand what ‘White Privilege” meant.

I came of age in the 80s. There were a couple of incidents at the high school that occurred. 1) A young lady who was black was to be the first Valedictorian who was cheated out of the position when one of the teachers sneaked into the guidance counselor office and doctor the Salutatorian's (a white male) grades to put him ahead. The teacher was caught but it was swept under the rug. The second incident of many that I remember was the school librarian (a white lady) was moving. Her assistant and the assistant's husband (a black couple) were helping her move across town one weekend. There was the occasion when the husband and the librarian were in the pick-up truck together. Monday morning she was called into the office and told that if she ever was seen in a vehicle with a black man, married or not, by herself, no matter the circumstances she would be fired. The most frustrating thing second to these incidents occurring are the gaslighting that follows that these things are not a big deal or they don't really happen at all.

There is one set of rules in this country. They’re applied differently for blacks and whites.

I’m half Hispanic (look more like my Irish dad though), we were a Navy / Catholic family.... we never saw ‘color’ in our home or life,
Everyone was welcome in our lives..
Really.... one of my dad’s bestest of friends ended up becoming the Navy’s first Black Admiral (Samual Gravely).
It was that very day (living in CA as a teen) that my dad had to explain to me why Sam as was getting so much grief & crap.... that man worked sooo hard for every rank and truly deserved that promotion!
It is so obnoxious when some people will try to slam me (looking white) claiming I’m racist and not even knowing me!
    Great discussion ladies!

In reality at our core we all are descendants of Africa. Whether white, black , brown, asian, native etc. We have different adaptations based on thousands of years of human migration and our environment. We are of the God created human race!

Wow....this amazes me to hear that you dealt with that sort of racism back in the 80's! Call me ignorant but It's astonishing!! I guess that I just never encountered anything like that. at least not in my face.

I think it's all about instinct. I go with my intuition to cross the street not my bias towards a particular race and I am black. However to each his own.

Emmanuel Acho has comfortable uncomfortable conversations.
