For the first (kid defending house) story, for anyone thinking 'wow what HORRIBLE parents.' Let me tell you. If your kid is constantly fidgeting and as flighty as a rabbit toward life in general and every little thing goes from 0 to 100 no matter how calm of a parent you are and no matter how calm the rest of the family is, it's hard to take your kid seriously about anything because everything is mortal terror and life threatening to them. A real emergency when your kid retells it is like any other day. Makes me google 'where did I go wrong as a parent' and 'child psychology insurance'. Raining? Can't go outside. Sees a bug? Hysterics. Lightning? Hysterics. Dark in the hallway? Run and possibly break one of your bones trying not to touch the dark. SOMEHOW by some miracle my kid has actual solid friends and is a straight A student, and even shows interest in sports that they do poorly in! :D Which is why I'm on the fence about taking them to a shrink. It's just who they are. :( I should apply to foster care and hopefully match with a kid who likes more time to themselves, the outdoors, and having a lot of pets. (My kid won't interact with any of our pets..)

I really fucking hate when parents amount serious situations to “wild imagination”.
It took THREE TRIES for that kids to convince their parents a child predator was intending on grooming them, and likely (I personally believe it was MOST DEFINITELY him) sneaking into their room at night to assault them.
We had a breaking my sophomore year of high school on MLK Day. We’d renovated the place, which was built in the thirties and hadn’t been occupied since the late 80s. What was once a sunroom was at some point closed off for storage, and that became my room. The unfortunate part, being the door leading outside, right by my bed.
I thank whatever part of my brain for choosing to go to my grandma’s for the day, as I’d originally planned to stay home all day and play my new Xbox I’d gotten as a late Christmas gift. Had it not been for that, I might not be here, typing this, today. They took everything. But not in the normal way, which boggled even the police’s minds. My stepdad was at work LATE, as well as my mom. They’d broken in TEN MINUTES after my dad picked me up. Instead of just taking the cords to TVs and my Xbox, they cut them in a way it’d be complicated to repair. Left the games and controller. My very expensive headset sitting near it all. My antique, very expensive Brighton bracelet that was passed to me by a cousin who only live to see my first birthday left out in the open on my dresser. But took all our laptops, and the only thing removed from our safe was MY birth certificate and Social Security Card. My mom’s and stepdad’s were untouched. Never caught the guys as they didn’t leave any prints.
I had to attend therapy for five months and sleep in their room on a cot, as they’d broken in through my room.
Fast forward to senior year. My grandma (mom’s side) is in hospice for lung cancer, and staying in our living room until her room we were building is finished (which was three days later). My aunt decided to stay and help care for her that night, as my school’s choir took a trip every year, and this was the night before. I’d just been cleared to go back after dealing with a serious case of pneumonia, and spending two weeks hospitalized. So, to give me a break and finish up a little work I still had left, mom and I were grateful for not having to take a shift. Finished the work, made sure everything on my list was packed. Went into the living room to hug my Nana and aunt for the night, and took my shower. Finally got in bed around 11:30, and decided to read a bit. My bedroom door had a bit of a “stick” to it, so anyone not regularly there, would assume it was locked. I heard the knob and said, “it’s unlocked” and looked under my door to see no shadow, followed by, “FUCK, FUCK! SOMEONE’S INSIDE!” In a whisper-scream (thin exterior walls so very easy to hear) and very heavy running. I immediately busted through the kitchen, living room, and into their bedroom to tell my mom and she said it was just my imagination.
Next morning, I’m woken an hour before my clock to my mom saying, “quietly go through the living room, outside, and around back. Don’t use your door. There’s an officer here to question you,”. I looked at her for a minute and replied, “I fucking told you.” And proceeded to make my way out. Both my stepdad’s and mom’s cars had been broken into, as they never gave two fucks to lock them in rural Ga. My aunt’s was not. I go to the back, the LONG WAY, as our entire exterior was practically a fucking crime scene. I reach the part where my door sits, and immediately see the footprints leading the other way around. I was taken to school by one of the officers after questioning, and given an excuse pass. On the way, I found out they broke into ALL THE CARS on our street. Luckily, I got to come back from the trip to the news they were stupid enough to use one of the credit cards they’d stolen at our local gas station, and were caught.
