This song is actually part of a trilogy with 2 other songs on the Folklore album, August and Betty. The 3 songs are the different perspectives of a fictional love triangle where the guy, James, cheats on one of them. Cardigan is the perspective of Betty who gets cheated on by James. The song is from her perspective of the situation years later after it happens. Betty (the song), is from James' point of view of cheating on Betty and realizing his mistake. The last song, August, is the perspective of the girl that James cheated on Betty with. Taylor does a really great job connecting lyrics between the three song like for example, the cardigan is referenced in Betty. I highly recommend listening to the other 2 songs to get the whole picture.
If you enjoy her low range, champagne problems is a great one to showcase that. Lyrically perfect, as well. It doesnt have a music video, so the lyric video will be great to help you understand and connect with her words.

What really sticks with me about the song is the continuity between verse and bridge. The verses contain, “When you are young, they assume you know nothing.” It’s an interesting comment on its own. The transition from verse to bridge, however, gives the lyrical combination, “When you are young, they assume you know nothing / But I knew you…” That combination takes me immediately to my first real love and heartbreak. I was young, and those older and wiser would have been right to assume that i knew… just about nothing. When i was young, they assumed I knew nothing, but I knew *him*. It’s bittersweet to this day, but I just can’t regret that love. He’s haunted my “what ifs,” as I knew he would, because I did know everything when I was young-or so I thought. “Cardigan” is an exceptionally mature and nuanced tale. The pop melody sounds pleasing, but it did cause me to focus on the sound structure more than the lyrical continuity. Seriously, i listened to this as soon as it came out, and it still took three years for it to dawn on me why this song hits me so hard: it’s the structure and truth of the lyrics. Really glad that you enjoyed it and made a vid, @Kaden Dayton!
Wowww I love your vulnerability here and for sharing a bit of your own story and how Taylor has affected you with her lyrics! It’s stories like that that make me realize how much of a genius and icon she really is! Thanks for the comment!:))

peace, from folklore, is an OUTSTANDING song that you need to check out!!! its crazy underrated, and not only are the lyrics gorgeous, but she sounds so pretty. you should definitely give it a listen!!
Cardigan is 🤌🤌🤌 But she has SOOOOOOOOOOOOO many bops and bangers it’s UNREAL. I truly hope you’ve continued down this rabbit hole. I became intrigued last summer when Cruel Summer hit the radio and Era’s Tour stuff was EVERYWHERE, and I dove HARDDDD down the rabbit hole. She is worthy, my friend. Trust. AND- per your comment on the artistic direction of the video- THAT WAS ALSO TAYLOR!! I suggest you listen to Folklore and Evermore albums from start to finish- if you haven’t already. Also- Dear Reader from the deluxe edition of the Midnights album is a great song where Taylor has a riff showcasing her lower range to high range 🤌🤌 The bridge is 🔥🔥🔥
She's got soooo many great songs, but I do think this one is my favorite. The lyric "Leaving like a father, running like water" just gets me, every time.
Ahhh as a vocal coach (you not me) I’d love to see you react to some more of her live performances! Particularly I Did Something Bad from the Reputations tours and Don’t Blame Me from the Eras tour.
Reputation is my favorite album so far....and I think Ready for it, Don't Blame me are my 2 favorite songs...but it changes all the time because I am a fan of most of her music
I don’t think you can be a swiftie without paying attention to her lyrics and appreciating the vulnerability. I hope next time you react to TS it will more lyric driven 🫶
anti-hero (midnights), all too well (10min version)(red), and the man (lover) would be my next picks for you to watch. They all have music videos/short films attached to them so it will definitely be an experience!
EVERBODY GET READY I AM DROPPING THE SONG: All to well ten minute version the short film or the sad girl autumn version recorded at long pond studio sessions. This song changed lives

I think you’d enjoy Tolerate It (watch the Eras version!) and No Body No Crime. All Too Well (the 10 min version) is a fan favourite and Champagne Problems is another great low range one
The Masterpiece Pen game it from the ALBUM OF THE CENTURY Folklore ❤ her Writing peak. please react more to her Folklore and evermore albums, trust me, every word hurts like a knife. also her Vocals are super improved starting folklore,Taylor’s Lower voice is so heavenly ❤❤❤

Swifty here ... I've watched 3 of your Taylor reactions - and based on your feedback I'd recommend the following 3 songs (and her evermore album). 💕 1.) evermore (feat. Bon Iver) 2.) marjorie 3.) New Year's Day You won't regret hearing these and they may just bring you to the swift side....
I think you'd really like My Tears Ricochet, Exile (ft. Bon Iver), and Peace from this same album! Also, of course, All Too Well (10 minute version). There is also a short film that goes with it but I would start with the lyric video to really feel out the song and then dive into the short film version!
@@kaden_dayton you’re welcome! Also an important note- I would recommend going the long pond studio session versions for folklore. It’s more stripped down and raw!
I recommend listening to all of folklore and evermore if you like cardigan! I was impressed by cardigan but when I listened to the rest of the album, I was shocked
React to Cardigan-August-Betty in order and if you want to see kind of the continuation of this music video react to "Willow" which is actually from Evermore, the 'sister' album of Folklore
The whole album is like this- the lower register really features as a highlight on this album. The entire album is not to be missed- you will understand once you give it a full listen why it won AOTY. And the sister album, Evermore, was nominated for AOTY. They are ones of the few non-skip albums I have (Evermore is also in that category). The only albums of hers I feel that way about (I have at least one skip on every album and I have been a fan since Debut).
Dude, please, listen to all Folklore and Evermore albums. I used to like Taylor's song, but these 2 albums made me a fucking crazy psycopath and someone who loves her songs more than myself. From them, I recommed you these songs: illicit affairs, seven, ivy, right where you left me, no body no crime, champagne problems, august, betty.
Everyone is recomending similar songs to this one from folklore and evermore so I am here to suggest another direction if you feel like it: 1. Dear Jhon 2.All too well (10 min version) They are story-like but (maybe because they're older) have a different "vibe" to it i guess and it hits you HARD
Welcome to the rabbit hole!! Enjoy the dive! Rule #1 always search for “Taylor’s Version” when looking for her music. The music before her Lover album was sold out from under her, so we try to only listen to her re-recorded versions. For me All Too Well 10 minute version is the pinnacle of Taylor Swift’s story telling. Don’t Blame Me is her best vocal range song. Exile is her best duet. New Romantics is her best feel good song. Blank Space is funny because she wrote a song based off of the media’s perception of her and it’s a bop. Vigilante Shit is her boss moves song. Midnight Rain and Back To December are self reflection of how she might have been the bad guy in 2 different relationships. While All Too Well and Would’ve Should’ve Could’ve are about her being wronged in other relationships. She’s covered so many musical styles there really is something for every mood. But the writing is almost always the most colorful lyrical picture painting possible! Good luck!
The song that will make you a swiftie is All Too Well (10 minute version) theres a short film to it aswell that you can watch....with this song you have to really focus on the lyrics
This song is actually part of a trilogy with 2 other songs on the Folklore album, August and Betty. I’ve had a lot of requests for that I def need to give it a listen!:))
Ivy, Invisible String, my tears ricochet, and tolerate it!!!!
Ooh thanks for the suggestions!!:))
SUBSCRIBED. Expecting more if her from now on..what about ALL TOO WELL 10 MINS VERSION
I’ve been wanting to do all too well for sureeee
Champagne problems are also great!
Oooh I love the suggestion!
Ahhh as a vocal coach (you not me) I’d love to see you react to some more of her live performances! Particularly I Did Something Bad from the Reputations tours and Don’t Blame Me from the Eras tour.
I would love to react to more of her live stuff!!!
my tears ricochet must DO IT FOR YOU!!!
Oooh ok thanks for the rec:)
Reputation is my favorite album so far....and I think Ready for it, Don't Blame me are my 2 favorite songs...but it changes all the time because I am a fan of most of her music
You should do the Longpond studio sessions. She sings this and a bunch of others from folklore live. It’s beautiful.
I def gotta check those out!
I don’t think you can be a swiftie without paying attention to her lyrics and appreciating the vulnerability. I hope next time you react to TS it will more lyric driven 🫶
That’s a good point! I’ll look into maybe doing a lyric breakdown next time!
I recommend "cowboy like me" from evermore!!
Oooh ok thanks for the suggestion:)
@@kaden_dayton you're welcome
anti-hero (midnights), all too well (10min version)(red), and the man (lover) would be my next picks for you to watch. They all have music videos/short films attached to them so it will definitely be an experience!
Oooh ok cool I would love to check those out!
Best song ever❤
It’s so good!!!!!
EVERBODY GET READY I AM DROPPING THE SONG: All to well ten minute version the short film or the sad girl autumn version recorded at long pond studio sessions. This song changed lives
Ooohhh I’ve heard a lot about the all too well 10 min version! Definitely will be checking that out soon!
Editing tip if I may, take the audio of the music you are listening to down a little bit when you talk, just so we can hear you a little bit better at these moments. Keep up the good work, you're doing great !
I appreciate the feedback! I noticed after I exported that there were some spots like that so I will def fix that in the next video!
August is amazing from this album as well. might wanna check it out. have fun falling down the swifty rabbit hole. its a loooong drop. lol
Thanks for the rec:) yes the rabbit hole indeed hahaha!!!
My tears ricochet, exile,
Oooh ok I’ve gotten a lot of requests for these!
This is me trying by taylor swift
Ooooh ok ok!
Nice reaction :) I recommend you to watch Taylor Swift - Cardigan / August / Willow performance on Grammy Awards 2021!!
Oooh I love live performances! I will definitely keep that in mind!!:))
I think you’d enjoy Tolerate It (watch the Eras version!) and No Body No Crime. All Too Well (the 10 min version) is a fan favourite and Champagne Problems is another great low range one
Ok sweet!! Thank you for all the suggestions!!!:)
The Masterpiece Pen game
it from the ALBUM OF THE CENTURY Folklore ❤
her Writing peak. please react more to her Folklore and evermore albums, trust me, every word hurts like a knife.
also her Vocals are super improved starting folklore,Taylor’s Lower voice is so heavenly ❤❤❤
I’m starting to see why people hype up folklore and evermore! The lyricism and vibes are definitely more up my alley! Thanks for the suggestions!:))
you should react to willow the lead single of Evermore
The music video of willow and cardigan are connected
The ending of cardigan and the beginning of willow
Oh really?! I will definitely look into that!!
You NEED to react to Dear John!
I recommend you
Right where you left me
Oooh I’ll have to check that out!!
Swifty here ...
I've watched 3 of your Taylor reactions - and based on your feedback I'd recommend the following 3 songs (and her evermore album). 💕
1.) evermore (feat. Bon Iver)
2.) marjorie
3.) New Year's Day
You won't regret hearing these and they may just bring you to the swift side....
I think you'd really like My Tears Ricochet, Exile (ft. Bon Iver), and Peace from this same album! Also, of course, All Too Well (10 minute version). There is also a short film that goes with it but I would start with the lyric video to really feel out the song and then dive into the short film version!
Ooooh ok thank you for the suggestion:)
@@kaden_dayton you’re welcome! Also an important note- I would recommend going the long pond studio session versions for folklore. It’s more stripped down and raw!
YES! My Tears Ricochet, Exile, and Peace! Especially the Long Pond Studio versions.
Definitely listen to tolerate it!!!
I’ve gotten a lot of requests for this!
@@kaden_dayton it’s my favorite Taylor swift song of all time and the performance to that song at her concert it’s beautiful
Exile, my tears ricochet, last kiss
Gotten a lot of requests for these!!
Willow, My Tears Ricochet
I recommend listening to all of folklore and evermore if you like cardigan! I was impressed by cardigan but when I listened to the rest of the album, I was shocked
Okay!! I will for sure listen to the rest of the album! I’ve heard such good things about folklore and evermore!
1000% MY TEARS RICOCHET
Thanks for the rec:)
React to Cardigan-August-Betty in order and if you want to see kind of the continuation of this music video react to "Willow" which is actually from Evermore, the 'sister' album of Folklore
I definitely need to hear all three together! I didn’t know that was a thing until everyone started commenting! Thanks for the suggestions!:))
Dangggg that’s pretty impressive! I definitely need to hear the full thing!
enchanted/wildest dreams 1989 world tour==ready for it/intro Rep tour
Oooh thanks for the suggestions!:))
Oooh ok yes I def need to listen to more of these albums!
Everyone is recomending similar songs to this one from folklore and evermore so I am here to suggest another direction if you feel like it:
1. Dear Jhon
2.All too well (10 min version)
They are story-like but (maybe because they're older) have a different "vibe" to it i guess
and it hits you HARD
ooo thank you for these!!
Mr. Perfectly Fine!!
ok ill check it out!
Good luck!
Oh ok awesome!! Thank you for all the recommendations:)
Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve!!! And look up the history behind the song before you listen, because it’ll hit harder
Love the suggestion! I haven’t heard of that one! I’ll do some research and check it out!
yeah im agree then I suggest you to react her Our Song its so cool it is a country song
I’ve heard a bit of her older country back in the day and I liked it but I need to go back and re listen!
All Too Well made me a Swiftie😊
I gotta check it out!!
I think you must listen Betty ❤
Ooh I’ll def look into it! Thanks for the suggestion!
I hope you like it
The song that will make you a swiftie is All Too Well (10 minute version) theres a short film to it aswell that you can watch....with this song you have to really focus on the lyrics
Yes I definitely need to check it out!!!!
If you have 10 min. All Too Well 10 min version. The lyric video though. Don’t watch the short film until you listen to the song though.
Oooh don’t worry that one is still on my list!!
You’ll love Cowboy like me, tolerate it, Ivy, champagne problems, exile
I’ve heard champagne problems a lot! I def need to give that a listen!:)
Try "Lover" & "Clean", so perfect!!!!
Ok deal! Thanks for the recs:)
OMG PLEASE LISTEN TO “TOLERATE IT”!!!!! it’s on the evermore album and it’s so gorgeous
DEAL
if you love this, keep going you will be a swiftie real soon. PS I love her and am 77 years old.
That's fantastic!! Yeah I think so too!
Do Right Where You Left Me from Evermore, please!
Oooh ok ok!!
