    Today I’ll show you how to make a pom pom without a pom pom maker!
    Pom poms add cheer and whimsy to every project. They make great accessories, and they’re the cherry on top of a knitted hat. They also make great stress balls!
    Thankfully, making a pom pom is not hard. If you can use a pair of scissors, then you can make a pom pom!
    All you’ll need are a pair of sharp scissors, cardboard (an old tissue or cereal box works great), yarn, and a can or a jar to help you trace a circle. That’s it. No commercial pom pom maker necessary!
    The secret to make the perfect pom pom is to use lots of yarns when wrapping your donut, make sure your scissors are super sharp, and finally, to use your donuts as a tracer to help you cut a perfectly round shape. So, good luck and happy pom pom-ing!

    I've made pompoms this way for years...2 things I learned from you though, to improve my pompoms moving forward:
    1. I used half the circle and my poms were half as fluffy before so now I'll use this 3/4 cardboard. Thx
    2. Loved your tip to use the catdboatd donut to approximate the trim-shape. Saves trimming too much or making a misshapen sphere. Great tip.
    A small suggestion if I can share. I thread the tying string between the 2 pieces of cardboard before I start wrapping... prevents the wraps from moving too much after they're cut.

    My grandmother taught me how to make pom-poms like that over 50 years ago.
    The only difference that makes it a lot easier is to lay the tie-off string between the donut halves before you start wrapping. By doing that, you won't have to worry about trying to keep everything from falling appart when you cut.

    • @Lulu-mj2fi
      @Lulu-mj2fi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That doesn't seem like that would work at all

    • @w.t.1338
      @w.t.1338 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Totally right! I was using thicker yarn and they all started falling out during the cutting stage. If I had laid out the string between the guides before wrapping I think that would have helped!

    • @stroopwafel14
      @stroopwafel14 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This makes the process of wrapping the yarn a bit harder but it rlly helps!

      @rebeccalofft6855 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I wish I had read your comment before I made the pom pom. :-D Would have worked much better to put the string in between the donut halves first. Learning by doing. Also wished that I had drawn the inner circle a bit smaller than I did, so that the yarn bits ended up longer. But great tutorial otherwise!

    I'm brand new to yarn at 67 but am having a blast. I've just made my first pom pom and you've made it SO easy and clear. More importantly to me on another note though is the foil sharpening scissors trick. Wish I'd known that ages ago. Thanks again!!!

    This is the first pom pom tutorial I watched and it makes it seems so easy. A complete crafting newbie like me made some fluffy pom poms in the very first attempt and all the 4 came out the well, true to the title. The trimming tip at the end is the best. A couple videos I watched later didn't have such a tip. Thank you for this tutorial!

    I've used my own cardboard pom-pom makers for years. It's a great way to make them. I never thought to use the "tracers" as guides to trimming. I usually do the trimming free-hand. Sometimes my pom-pom comes out quite small!!!! Thanks for showing that tip! Great video.

  • @maryb6872

    I needed a bigger, fluffier pom pom for a bunny tail for my grandson's Halloween costume, so I used a larger "donut" and bulky yarn along with a medium weight for a 2 tone effect. Once I started cutting the yarn loops to free them, it became very difficult to keep everything from unraveling. I used thin ribbon "yarn" for the cording, so I started inserting the cording as I cut the loops, so when I was done the cording was already in place to tighten. Maybe adding the option of pre-threading the cording at the center of the "donut" before wrapping the yarn would be a good suggestion when making larger, bulkier pom poms. Otherwise the pom pom came out very nice, and I really like your method. :)

    I remember trying to make a pom pom with the cardboard donuts in the 8th grade shortly after I learned how to knit... I thought it was trash bc the ends were uneven... somehow I never even thought to use the donuts to trim off the extra and even it out! Thank you for redeeming my pom pom skills!

  • @rachelpollock8863
    @rachelpollock8863 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    After the first trim use a dog slicker brush (wire) to make the pompom fuller. Run your hand around the ball to bring additional fullness. Then trim the then yarn threads that are beyond the pom pom's outer circumference. It really adds to the fullness.

    I love the expression "nice 'n chubs"! Haha! I would encourage people to not trim over newspaper and throw it away though. Newspapers should be recycled!

    • @sheepandstitch
      @sheepandstitch  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That's true! I didn't think about recycling (bad on me!). I suppose you could use the newspaper to catch the trimmings, then tip the trimmings into the trash, and then recycle the newspaper. 😄

      Or trim into a bowl maybe?

    When I cut it, the yarn came loose off the ring, although I didn't wrap it loosely. Any suggestions please?

    • @debo4706
      @debo4706 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Iuliana Schnell if you put the tie yarn inside the donuts before you wrap ,you can tie the knot before you cut . Just make sure you tie the knot very tight after you cut the Pom. I hope I made my self understood.

    I'm going to make a couple "donuts" from plastic lids. More durable. I love this technique.
    Update: I just made my first ever pom pom using your technique, and I LOVE it!! It was so easy, and the bunny tail I made for my grandson's pink bunny Christmas Eve jammies ;-) turned out SOOOOOO cute and perfectly fluffy!!

      Why am I here? Yeah you can do that or either buy a Pom Pom maker

    • @RKusmie64
      @RKusmie64 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@saku807 I did actually buy a set of pom pom makers from Wish, waiting for them to arrive, and we'll see how they work and last, but I also made one for that pom pom tail out of a heavy cardboard and they worked great :-) If the ones I bought don't work/last, I'll make the plastic ones (of course just after I watched the video, they showed up while I was browsing Wish lol and I had to get them)

      You need to pull the cord round the middle much tighter.

      You need to tie the center string really tight like, pull like you have never pulled before to cinch those little yarn strings in place. 🙂
