Glen Campbell was one of contemporary music's most talented and versatile artists. From his time with the Wrecking Crew to his tour while battling Alzheimers he was a giant.
As a CHILD I grew up on Glenn Campbell... As an adult I am in awe.. Of a Vertero.. And God kissed the EARTH.. Now, I, a GRANDMOTHER.. Struggle to play the ukulele.. God BLESS Genns family... And the song can overcome the SORROW.. ❤ THANK YOU...
What I would give for this to have been recorded with decent sound quality. Glen's playing is so ridiculous and the country twang on the vocals works so well. It's one of my favorite covers of all time on youtube.
One of my faves being that Sanford & Townsend are from my area. I can't believe Glen hit those notes in "Smoke". I knew he was really a super-talented guy, but I didn't know his range was that good. His vocals reaches halfway into a 3rd octave if you compare this song with a baritone song like "Wichita Lineman". Most people can't cover 2 octaves.
Glenn just tore up that guitar. So much talent. Real talent because he could not read music so all those "Wrecking Crew" Sessions were all by ear. I play a lot by ear but nothing like Glenn's talent.
The S&T Band really caught lightning in a bottle with this song. They did it live on Midnight Special and it was spot on perfect. Not many people cover it and most don't really capture it well. I think good ol' Glen does about the best I've ever seen
It was Glens guys playing and singing in the rhythm section along with the Tonight Show horns; Trumpets, Saxes and Trombones. Probably Tommy Newsom's horn arrangements@@anthonyangeli256
Yes, Glenn does look like he was hopped up but Damn what a couple of major league musicians. We'll never see anything like these two again. So glad to see this video.
He sure had a good time doing that song! He really could sing anything and sound great! Great interview , he was very comfortable talking with Roy. Glad I found this clip!
@@noelking7215Glenn and Roy are great. The only thing better than listening to each of them play, is listening them play together. They are both legendary.
I'm a traditional Jazz and Fusion fanatic, but Glen Campbell will ALWAYS be a special favorite of mine-- regardless of genre! Was simply one of the great versatile talents of Contemporary music. Thanks so much for this video. (helluva guitarist, as well. Very underrated.)
Great rendition of one of my favorite one hit wonder songs - Glen’s musicianship was incredible (see Beach Boys / Wrecking Crew) and he could rock as seen in this cover.
This is a great song by the Sanford and Townsend band. A one-hit-wonder group. But it was written and performed excellently by the S&T band. But here comes Glen just killing it with his band AND the Tonight Show band playing together and WOW this is terrific! I miss Glen. He was a one-of-a-kind. Every body recorded By the Time I get to Phoenix. But if you listen to all the covers it was only Glen's that stood out! Even Jim Webb himself realized he could not compete with the way Glen could deliver his songs!!
Glen was such a sensational artist. Unbelievable guitarist and super great singer. For a country/western artist he could sing anything; R&B, blues, top 40, down home country or contemporary. He was just a true talent that’s sure missed.
What a great clip and piece of music history!! I always liked that Glen would be really enthusiastic about putting his spin on a current popular song. Thanks for posting this!!
Even Glen coked up heavy here on drugs still sounds way better and way more upbeat than any of the boring to death depressing garbage K-Pop, Rap and Hip Hop crap since the late 1980's. RIP Brother!
If you've ever seen Sanfred Townsend's performance of this on the Midnight Special, you'll know what an incredibly hard act they are to follow, but GC does a great job here. The band also do an outstanding job.
Slackjawed, stunned awe. I never figured Glen being interested in the Sanford-Townsend song, and it's unbelievable. Then the "reacharound" of two greats hacking away at each other for fun, and then the unbelievable classic. Unreal.
He might have played guitar on the record. Glen was with the wrecking crew. These guys recorded many songs that we heard in the 60's and 70's. He probably was probably on the record.
@@eugenebeasley1094 Sanford & Townsend were only relevant to the state of Alabama prior to the hit song getting out. Like their lead guitarist, they were regional session writers and musicians, and not turning in the same circles as Glen Campbell in the late 70s. The band broke up after three albums, with Sanford returning back to studio work and Townsend eventually joining forces with Dan Toler, a former member of The Allman Brothers.
I've seen a couple of other vids wherein Glen and Roy played one guitar in tandem, but this is the first one that I've seen them pull it off on a 12-string.
It's a matter of choice and choices, but for me, I would have loved Roy and Glenn to take the stage together (they seldom did) and play "Ghost Riders" or any number of songs where they could play and sing together. Both me, fantastic players AND singers.
That was AWESOME!!! Glen just Killing it, I expected nothing less from one of the boys from the Wrecking Crew, Thank you for Posting this Beauty, it was great, Roy is another Beast who does it All. 🎸💚
This is the best version of this song that I've ever heard, and that includes the original. This is not suprising, Glen could do any genre and was agreat singer and one of the best guitarist ever. So was Roy Clark.
Thought it was Christmas with the background lights, then remembered this was from the 70's, that explained it. For the real deal, put this in your search bar and smoke it - - Midnight Special-Sanford Townsend Band "Smoke From A Distant Fire"
Ok! OK! Ok! Just hold on one second here. Now this is the Sanford Townsend Band song right? God I love there version! I mean it's killer right? I can jam to that all night long! Get's me in the mood to party! Well I just decide to do a cover search and what do I find? Sir Glen???????????????? NO!!!! Way!!!!! I am so tossed up, my favorite song done by my favorite singer? Can life get better? So after hearing it... what's my opinion? Well Glen never does anything half ass but I have to say I will stick with Sanford Townsend band with this song. Not because nothing Glen has done but only because it's not them! They get #1 in the books! :) Great job Sir Campbell! No cigar!
1:23 Who can tune, play and perform at the same time without missing a beat? I'd have to test the string to make sure I'd set it correctly. I bless the day Glen Campbell first picked up a guitar. 🥰
I've never heard Glen do this one. He killed it.
Killed it is right. His guitar skills on display and his signature voice calling out. The joy on his face.
Too bad the audio (probably from tape) kinda sucks. The performance is top notch, however!
I fortunately saw it when it first aired on The Tonight Show, since I watched the show nightly, after the news, when I was growing up.
Glen Campbell was one of contemporary music's most talented and versatile artists. From his time with the Wrecking Crew to his tour while battling Alzheimers he was a giant.
Glen was a phenomenal guitarist! You couldn’t find many better RIP Glen
Yes, an almost equally good singer. Incredibly talented!
I want to give this a thumbs up every time I watch it.
Roy Clark is gone too :o( He left us today, 15 November 2018. Rest in peace.
Shook Roy Clark’s hand while at St. Jude in Memphis, TN.
Roy and Glen were each HUGE talents. The fact that they were good friends is really special.
A great version of a fabulous song, two LEDGENDS , thanks so much
Glen always played with a natural enthusiasm and vibrance. Love his rendition of this tune!
Amen.

I can usually cover one octave. "Row, Row, Row Yer Boat" -- that one I can nail.
Glenn just tore up that guitar. So much talent. Real talent because he could not read music so all those "Wrecking Crew" Sessions were all by ear. I play a lot by ear but nothing like Glenn's talent.
Those two had so much talent that they didn't need ego.
Proof why Glen will always be one of my musical heroes.
Viva the memory and music of Glen Campbell.
Man I'd love to have a professional recorded version of this! Glen is so awesome!!!
Amen, Brother Steve. Some of the best songs are cover versions.
What a superb video find. Sad that both men are past.
Like Merle Haggard said, if there is a man born with too much talent, it is Glen Campbell.
Don't see talent like this anymore, all these men were accomplished musicians
With all his hits and popularity he remains very underrated ___ he was and is a great popular vocalist ___ amazing

S&T band? That's the fabulous NBC orchestra under the direction of the great Doc Sevreson!
@@anthonyangeli256 Thanks. I realize that this video is not S&T band. If you'll notice I mentioned Glen in my comment.

If not. Real real close for sure
YES. No one else has ever been able to sing and play like that. I could just blast vocally at that age. Incredible
Yes for sure.
I Agree....Glen Campbell was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥🙌💯❤️
Glen was known to say that he wasn't a country performer but instead was a country boy that happened to become a performer.
Glen was and will always be THE best!! R.I.P.😢
Glenn was one of the best players ever,,,, EVER!
Yep. But Roy was better!

Glen was fab as usual but how bout that NBC orchestra!!!
I was this many years old, when I realized that "SFADF" definitely needed 5 saxophones!
It's Max Weinberg's "drum teacher", Ed Shaughnessy, kickin' out the jams.
