    Obsidian and Espanso have been my two most recent favorite apps. And Nicole is one of my most favorite TH-camrs of late, so it's nice to see this come together here! 🙂

    Your approach to this topic is on point. Moving from text expansion localized on Obsidian, to full OS with Espanso, which is cool, because I use Linux and Windows. Cheers

    I have been using espanso a lot alongside obsidian as I dont want to create obsidian templates for every small text expansion I need. its a super combo and a great tool for your workflow to speed things up.

    I've been looking forward to this video for a while!! I use espanso a lot as an OCR with capture2text and it's been saving me so much time and I love seeing how others are setting up their tools. Thank you for sharing Nicole!

      Wait what? How can you do OCR with espanso? Is it a script or something?

    Thanks so much for this video, Nicole. Espanso ticks all the boxes for me for all the reasons you mentioned. And I loved the NO section! Currently I have all my expansions in the one file but I do have them sectioned with comments. I plan to split things up but want to wait until I'm more settled with it. I've found in the last few days using it that I think it's faster than the other closed source software, but it could just be my imagination. I feel fortunate that I've been using text expansion for writing since the mid 1990s and have been able to use the same abbreviations over all this time, sometimes with slight changes, but it really helps with muscle and brain memory!

    Thanks. I use AHK on Windows. Besides expansion, it lets me convert my own standard key controls, like ctl-shift-9, to whatever is needed by the foreground app. It can also access GUI controls, such as textbox or checkbox, to automate tasks. Trust a old school dev to want to do things in code. 💜

    I already have a different App that includes text expansion that I am serious underusing. Thank you for the inspiration, also the semi-colon! The times I have had a word that happens to have the three letters or whatever I have set inside of it. This video has inspired me to make far better use of the app.

    This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you. I wondered if there was a way to have "variables" in obsidian.
    While this isn't fully the same, it's really darn close.

    Yes, great vid, now off to re-find my old 'glossary' listing for Word for Windows, when I used to work for a 40 character length company but was also known by its TLA. And within the device across apps then even better, great reminder. And a reminder re the macro function within Obsidian too. Good to see you back after the travels.

      So triggers are not case sensitive - as it looks from some of your examples?

    • @timbushell8640
      @timbushell8640 ปีที่แล้ว

      And yes - a good one is those commonly shared vids (blogs, etc.) on each subject... to drop into replies and social media, etc.
      Book titles and author, groups of even, is I found a great one too. (Music or films - if that is your criac.)

    • @timbushell8640
      @timbushell8640 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, and lastly, just a thought...
      Why not use Espanso to replace templates - at least all the basic ones - in Obsidian, open a new file and type the trigger and pop!

    Great video Nicole as always. I also love espanso and I've been using it for like a month. But mostly for things here and there to fill out forms. I knew it was capable of so much more but I just didn't know what to do with the full capabilities of the tool. Now your video gave very interesting ideas on how I can use it. Really interesting the regex stuff.
    Keep up the good work.

    Are the ways to say no in the vault on your patreon? That would be invaluable to me. I have recently had a little help from a book called Nonviolent Communication that has a method of saying no, and it's pretty great as well. Thanks for making this video.

    Thank you for publishing this video. I use TextExpander currently. Partly because it ties into work snippets.
    I've been curious about Espanso for a while now so this is a really interesting overview. I'm curious whether it's possible to convert TE snippets into Espanso completions. 🤔 I'll do a little research on that when I have a chance.

    It would be great if there was an android keyboard that could use the same config files as espanso for suggestions or autocorrections. On smartphone and tablets would be even more useful a synchable list of shortcuts.

    I love these kinds of tools. Obsessed, even? I will spend an hour in setup to save 1/2 second of time. Somehow that makes sense to my brain. I use Raycast as well for the date function in a snippet, but for me, for the vast majority of my replacements I use Mac's built in text replacement since, if you are in the Apple eco-system, it works across Mac, iPad, iPhone etc. If you aren't doing anything particularly complicated (for anything complicated I would use QuickAdd with templates), and are in the Apple ecosystem, what benefits does this app bring as opposed to the built in text replacement? I also use Butler (which came along SOOOO many years ago it makes Alfred look like a youngster). I use that one because I can search for my commonly used items and it also has a keystroke feature so it can paste stuff and then arrow key back (so I can fill in a variable in a code block for example). Likely other tools can do that much better but I have been using it since Chicago was a prairie. Love your content, Nicole!

    Hi! Great video!
    Tell me, how did you make it so that you use the ";" symbol in your .yml document, although it should be ":" as the documentation says? I realized that it's faster to type that way).

    • @nicolevdh
      @nicolevdh  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Glad you liked it! The : is just the default, so I changed it to the ; instead. You can actually choose whatever symbol you want (or even not use any symbols).

    Forgot to add. Back when you had people's postal addresses to include... like with your "me." prefix I had say "AS" as Adam Smith, but "ASa" as Adam Smith 15 The Close, London. SW1AA 5ZP... ... including companies too, with email and telephone numbers - then just backspace bits I didn't need.

    Have you set up your Espanso-config to sync automatically through git in any way (similar to what can be done with Obsidian Git)? If so - how? 😊

    Hi Nicole,
    Somehow my comment got deleted. Bummer bc it was a looong one.
    Essentially…do you have any strategies for someone who is moving notes en masse from Google Docs and an external hard drive to Obsidian?
    I want to take advantage of the extensible and linked capabilities of Obsidian and I love the local aspect as well.
    I’ve tried to use other apps like Notion and Scrivener for creative work, but Obsidian feels different. I was taking notes in it the other day and I actually felt joyful using the app in a way that other apps can feel like drudgery to me. And I love taking notes.
    Thanks for any feedback or suggestions.

    Great video! Thank you so much for sharing it. I'm currently trying to set everything up, but I'm encountering some issues specifically with Google Docs. I'm not sure why, but it doesn't seem to be working properly. Has anyone else experienced similar problems?

    • @nikolanuss2342
      @nikolanuss2342 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems that there is an issue with the combination of Espanso + Safari + Google Docs. However, it works fine with the Chrome browser.

    I think people will figure this out themselves. But just FYI, on Mac, the out-of-the-box setting of Espanso interferes with the hot key of Alfred.
    You just need to customize the setting you want in config/default.yml. e.g. I use this:
    search_shortcut: CTRL+ALT+SPACE

    Very useful thanks. You likely will have spotted and fixed this, but your : ts macro uses %m rather than %M. I only found this because I followed your lead and added this for myself.
