- Father John Misty & John Densmore of The Doors perform The Doors-classic 'Moonlight Drive' at the Harry Dean Stanton Award Show on October 23, 2016. Vidiots' first "Harry Dean Stanton Award" tribute took place at the Theatre at Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles on October 23, 2016. The show was produced by Vidiots Foundation, Harper Simon, Leslie Wilson, Logan Sparks, Sophie Huber, and Laila Nabulsi to benefit Vidiots. The show's epic House Band was led by Harper Simon and included musicians Carla Azar, Paz Lenchantin, Benji Lysaght, and Will Canzoneri. The show was shot and edited by Vidiots friend and supporter Garrett Sutton.

Man ....lighten up everybody about the lyrics. I thought the energy of this was awesome and the performance superb!!!! They were all into it...that's what counts. I caught a glimpse of the energy Densmore brought to the Doors. His playing is unique. Jazz influenced but not Jazz. I think it inspired Jim more than we know. Actually all the Doors did. A unique combination of musicians that will never be again. Have to soak it in when it happens. This performance was like that. A one off .....great stuff!!!
Father John has a good voice! Sounds nothing like Jim but he makes the song his own and I like it! Good Job FJM!
He’s almost like a bearded skinny Jim! I’d like to hear his take on more Doors songs! If fact if they wanted to tour with him singing all the songs it would be interesting!

ya know, the song was originally called moonlight ride, the title was changed somewhere at the time of recording the '65 sunset sound demos

One or two missed lines won't ever really bug me, but some of the words goofed kinda ruin the flow of the song. Still, very cool that this happened and I hope to see Father John Misty do some more Doors tunes in the future.

For goodness sake, people, there is no rule etched in granite that says when you cover somebody else's song, you MUST do it EXACTLY like the original, with no modification whatsoever! If I want to hear this song sound exactly like the original, I'll pull out my old Strange Days album and put on the Doors original! As long as the song, whatever it may be, is recognizable and the performance is done reasonably well, I love hearing someone do their own interpretation of it. He's not Jim Morrison, you say? Of course he isn't; Jim's gone and he's not coming back! Give this guy some room to breathe, for crying out loud.

I’m not familiar with John Misty’s music but I really like how he chose to sing this. He’s not overstretching or trying too hard to sound like Jim. His vocal range naturally suits the key of the song.
Learn the lyrics, show some respect to this masterpiece!
This is really great nice 1 guys. I don't know why folks keep trying to compare anyone with Jim or or the Doors cos they were and are so unique. I thought this guy was a great singer and good performance by the band and of course John was fantastic. Cheers guys.

Would have been ideal if after they were done playing, a fan walked up to the stage and placed a piece of paper on the floor as a Symbolic Gesture with lyrics for the next time around...which probably won’t happen again

Well the truth is it's a very hard to do vocals for the doors because the standard was set by Jim. So if you take Liberties you better be really good. This guy wasn't. Scott Weiland and Travis from Days of the New both did really well for the Doors tribute album/vh1 performance. Eddie Vedder was an obvious choice for the HoF induction in 93. Ian from the Cult did the Dof21 tour and even though I respect him, he tried to hard to imitate Jim.
Channeling his inner Morrison. I've never heard of him, but I'm guessing he's been posing as Jim Morrison long before this night. Wonder what Harry Dean thought of his performance.

LOVE FJM and The Doors were one of my 1st bands I truly fell in love with. That said this isnt exactly the greatest rendition of this tune. At least get the lyrics right, Josh. Loved the banter at the end, however! Definitely got better towards the end.

No way! Anybody singing the Doors' songs gets too cringy to watch and/or listen. Morrison was so unique, original and out of this world good and intresting that it is just pathetic and better to leave his songs all together. I love and miss Morrison a lot, and do not ask me why.

As much as I love the doors (and I do) Josh Tillman has written as much good music as Jim Morrison did. Granted in took him a decade longer

@ what do you mean he is no Jim Morrison? As if he was trying to look like Jim?? Exactly the opposite, it was the performance on his own, his own way, the guy is doing nothing to impersonate Jim Morrison except that he very much looks like bearded Jim, really close to Jim's facew, he's got a great voice too, I liked the song, not at all like original which is good, we all wishing something that is not just the copy, and this is the one. Thumbs up!
