  • Will this motor ever run correctly? With your help maybe! I've been working on this motor now for several weeks and just cannot figure it out. It has compression, it's getting fuel and it has good spark. In my opinion I believe it is a fuel delivery issue. I'll be disassembling the carburetor, again, in an upcoming video checking to see what is going on. I've ordered a carb rebuild kit and will show that in an upcoming video. I'd appreciate any advise. Ongoing struggle with this mercury outboard motor. I need your help.

    Marv you my new hero,
I have 2006 ish 9.9 hp long shaft Honda 4 stroke, idles too high , I felt overwhelmed trying to work on it myself,
A local shop quoted me 500 to service and see what else is wrong. Feel like I am being fd…
I found few good manuals on line, they made me think I can fix it my self.
The shop has not called me in 8 days, if they have not started working on it, I ll try to take it back.
    Thank you

i have the exact same motor but a 25 that i restored and there was a gasket behind the carburettor which ended up being the wrong gasket and when i changed it it ran like a charm so maybe try that if that dosent work im not sure

usually when it splits gas out the front of the carb the reeds need replaced. That would also be why it idles poorly. The other thing on these motors is the case may need to be split and resealed. Mercury uses this not hardening weird gasket sealer that fails all the time on this motor. It too can cause idle issues just like what it is doing.
If it will take off and run wide open then it is one of the things I mentioned. The way to check the reeds is to remove the reed block and shine a light from the inside and look to see if there are any gaps that light shows through. Sometimes depending on the type of reed you can flip it over and it will fix it for a while. But if there is any gap between the reed block and reed it will run bad and spit fuel out that gap.

Listen Im sitting here drinking coffee fixing to Go to work and guess where. Yep my 35th Year at PK lake and on a few outboards pwcs and sterdrives. Let me tell you how a outboard works the first 2 3rds of throttle is mainly turning the stator and ignition timing before carb. they need synced. pull the carb off and give it a good cleaning then find the correct inital adjustment for low speed screw. propanly 2.5 out. check reeds valves while off. You are adjusting everything you see and no idea to what degree they need be. then make sure fuel is good! not just the tank but the fuel in carb float bowl too. The adjustment on front of carb only affects idle area hence called idle mixture screw. Im fairly certin a good carb cleaning might fix your issue. To maybe cheat take the air screw out and remove float bowl drain and flush carb/choke cleaner into the air mixture screw hole with screw out then put back about 2 turns out. its getting small enough fuel to try start die. To test this spray some carb spray in carb and try start. it trys to run then you know its fuel it dont well its flooding or ignition weak. you have to find direction not just guess.

Ok now that’s clear enough. I’m rebuilt ing carb and found a couple of issues in doing so I ordered a new float for the carburetor and I’m wondering which direction the new float goes in it’s got ridges inside and one in thicker than the other. Thanks for your help

I found issues in the carburetor. This all started from a mouse nest found a couple of years ago. Thanks for asking.

@@marvinrschwartz7402 I was a Mercury tech for many years, often times the ball bearing gets pushed into the spring causing a very rich condition

@johnropeleski6006 thanks for the tip. The motor runs really good but when cold and first start it starts really hard. Something still isn’t 100%
