I met Francois in the basement back room of some club in the meat market (14th St NYC), this was circa 1990. So I ventured downstairs cuz I just wasn't feeling the main upstairs room vibe, and found this empty room with incredible music being played. No one in that room but the DJ, a red light, and the sound. I must have danced alone for a good 3 hours before anyone else joined me, by the end of the night, I'd say there were probably 6 people in that room who danced with me all night. A shame I thought... but then... At the end of the night, or shall I say day (it ended a 8am), I went to the DJ and thanked him for a wonderful evening. I barely drank that night or did any sort of drugs, I just danced the entire time. I told him how I wished more people had been down there to experience his selection and journey (man, he played some remixes I never heard and drop some new stuff as well). He brought me in close, whispered in my ear and said, "the night was perfect". He went to on to tell me, he preferred to play to an empty room to a few people who appreciated the music. Something to the effect "i would rather play for 1 person who appreciates the music, than 1000 people who have no clue". He shook my hand, gave me a hug, and told me to never stop dancing. I really appreciated that moment. I then asked for his name.... "Francois. Francois Kevorkian". I nearly pissed my pants. I thought to myself, these people upstairs had no clue they had a legend in their very own basement, or they did know and didn't care. But then I remember what Francois said... "the night was perfect." Indeed it was Francois, indeed it was. Thanks to you and your musical journey.
I listen to you everyday. This music has a spiritual context to me. They say you can't go back but the music pushes me forward knowing that I have experienced greatness....
Love the stories that you are sharing. I( played some of the clubs you mentioned but never could get into the tight knitted group that controlled music and the club scene. It was an honor to have had the experience. This music is a lifeline for me so thank you for pulling out the crates and turning us on to yesterday. Hugs
Francois, I will never forget you were one of the very few people who actually took the time to see and listen to a young 18 year old skinny kid wanna be songwriter in 1982. This was during the days when you could drop by unannounced at record labels. I was visiting at the time and decided to see what would happen and went to several labels. I'll never forget your graciousness. Glad you are still doing well. You are a part of the foundation of Prelude.
Thank you so much for sharing your stories. I've been a garage record collector and a fan of yours since the mid-80s. I only recently came across this channel. Keep it coming!
Amazing music! Many, many tunes I'd never heard before. Incredible vibes (it seems like you can feel a partial imaginative approximation of what it would have felt like to live in and be of that time and place) and very inspiring, both in regards to creativity and just in getting through the battle that is every day life. Gratitude for creating this very important historical record and a timeless music listening experience!
Hands down!! Queen Sharon Redd rules. Love the commentary on the recording session with her for his mix of Can You Handle It!!! Respect to François K! 💖
I’m approaching hour 6 of this and totally love the format. The intertwining of events that occurred during recording sessions and such just bring this legendary record label to life and I’m even a bigger fan now of all your work Mr. Francois K. 😊
It was November 27, 1982 and you were filling in for Ken Carpenter at BONDS. Today, 39 years later I say Thank You very much for your life changing set that night. All the best in 2022!!

Peace ✌🏼
I remember being an intern at WBLS and Music department frequently venturing to The Paradise Garage. Prelude was in heavy rotation at the station and I never knew that you mixed most of these classics until I looked at the label. Fun music great time!
Prelude music is music, that made me feel like I was floating through time and space! This was during my youth in New York City dance clubs. my memories of serving in the U.S. Army. We parrrrrrrrrtied back! Ft Leonard Wood Missouri, Ft. Belvoir Virginia, Ft. Meade Maryland, Germany.
Man a great great history set a really behind the scene music story awesome back stories, I lived thru all of the prelude area Thanks Francois K. I remember I wanna say Zanzibar in Nwk you weaved at us on the dance floor right below the mirror dj booth my favorite stomping ground the strikers body music still give me chills when it first comes and I"m 60 yrs nice thanks again for all the good memories from Prelude NYC K what 4 people hit the down button on this gem you gave us Geesh
Hello there Mr.K,I have been following dance music for quite a long time, spinning in the underground, crate digging, and used to hit the clubs, before I started working the turntables.I was just having a conversation with a friend also pivotal in the DJ/production world, about some of these JOhnnyComeLately folks, trying to insert themselves in a timeline they were not a part of.There's someone who is making content about people who made tracks with his recordings.Like I explained to him and his cohorts, when HipHop and dance/club music came out, they were not even recognized, until DJs like Frankie Crocker spun the material on commercial radio.Forty years later, now folks are falling out from nowhere claiming they have been hipHop/Househeads,from day one, which is a lie.It took spinning breaks back and forth on the turntables, and creating 12" records/remixes to bring to light many records which could be found in the dollar bins.Anyway, right now I am jamming in bed to Can YOU Handle it???...banger,,That guitar work..Those keys, and then Sharon talks to us,then sings us into heaven..Keep on spinning and bringing us some REAL history...From the Boogie Down Bronx, and I see you Louie Vega, who I finally met in person a few years back,at the skating rink I was working at,HotSkates...
Wow...I just watched a TH-cam documentary about Kraftwerk, and it included you, and now here you are popping up in my feed! This is a honor and privilege for me a disco and house music lover...7+ whole hours of you, and you starting off with the legendary Patrick Adams (who the world sadly lost a year after you did this). My mind is blown!!!!
This is an incredible tribute to the wonderful music of Prelude Records. The first D-Train album is in my opinion one of the best albums in any genre ever, it is a masterpiece!
One of the greatest streams ever,so many classic tracks,it’s amazing the amount of great produced songs that were on played in clubs, streets ,over the radio, truly awesome time in NYC and club scene.Francois has been such a curator of that classic NYC sound that still gets people on the dance floor, but most of all ,brings the most beautiful memories from people who were there in this place and time.Thank you so much Francois for all your contribution to the scene.🙌🏽🙌🏽✊🏽✊🏽
As a former DJ back in 78 to around 92 I had almost every Prelude 12 in there was still listen to the music great job on this video and this is coming from a person in his seventies it's a shame it took me so long to find this video fan-fucking--tastic.
Just been listening to a collection of Sharon Redd's disco hits. It's that PRELUDE SOUND. I saw her live once at Circus Disco in L.A. and she got so into performing she accidentally wrapped herself up in her microphone cord! Somebody unwound it for her. She laughed, we laughed, and we loved her. My favorite dance singles on Prelude: "Keep on Jumpin'", "Searching to Find the One", "Caught Up (in a One Night Love Affair" ( the group was Inner Life , but the lead was Jocelyn Brown, baby!) , and "Beat the Street". I loved this label ! So did DJs 'cause I heard them a lot here in L.A. back in the day when dance music took us all to "church"!
François, our community will never we able to pay for the service you provide with videos like this one. We just can send our LOVE to you! This is precious material that no one else would be able to share! A huge thank you!

Time flies Fraçois! Hope you and yours are safe! Meet you back early 2000 when you did a gig here in Norway. The story was that we wanted to give you our 12" release as a promo. We approached the Dj booth and you came over. You was so welcoming towards us! We offered you our 12" promo, and your reply was; Oh, I already have that. Keep up the work! Peace , addvibe.
That's what I needed without knowing that I needed. I'm a huge fan of Prelude and I'm lucky because I have one copy of Jeanette Lady Day signed by François. This mix is GOLD!
I’m almost through hour 5 and nothing but gold nuggets of music and knowledge. I’m blown away by all the good music this label put out, some tracks I knew well, many I did not. Thank you for the musical journey history lesson on this great label, Francois K!
Francios you are the best and one of the kindest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of being able to call a friend! I admire your talent and respect you for your craft.
Great Prelude Records Session Francois K. These Records Were A Part Of My DJ Upbringing In High School In Newark NJ. I Hope That You Will Do More Dance Label Tributes In The Future.
Francois you're the man. I love the history and of course your masterful work. I still have all my Prelude 12" singles and albums and I'm 57! I still listen to disco music and Prelude had great disco/funk songs. Thank you for this great catalog of music.
François K., a huge THANK YOU for this retrospective, musicology conference, and worldwide home-party :) Fascinating anecdotes and guests ! (and chat !!) Such a generosity. Very much appreciated !!! As a neophyte I don't know well what is it to « mix » a track at a label studio at that time. Maybe because today in dance music, sampling is so common and easy with computers, re-mix, re-re-mix etc. So, what is mixing at Prelude in 1979 for example ? Recording the instruments and mix from scratch ? In collaboration with arranger and artists, or with some independence ? Was there a kind of latitude and possible appropriation ? And also, I guess the development of electronic tools in music creation did modify the mixing job over these particular years ?
The scope of your questions would require an entire book to answer, and there are plenty of resources available for you to learn this, especially 'Classic Recording Sessions' from the online archives of Sound On Sound UK (bit.ly/3baByq9) , or Mix Magazine. (www.mixonline.com/recording/classic-tracks). This is a great rabbit hole to dig into, you are encouraged to make your own way discovering this. These two magazines alone could teach you most of what you ask, but you'll also have to do some of the work yourself. Good luck.
I’m with you, I have so many questions to ask after watching. Like, for example how were the super tight rhythms constructed and recorded for later artists, as this era was pre-midi?
Francois, this is amazing. So many of these songs also were rocking at the Funhouse, in particular "Come Let Me Love You", "'I'm A Man" & "Disco Circus". Conniptions all the way!
Funhouse rarely gets a mention in conversations of classic NYC clubs, but it was really another venue, where it was more diverse of the city, yes it was mostly kids from Queens and Brooklyn,Latino,Italian mostly. It could be rough at times, but their hulk like security made sure to put a stop to anything before it got out of control.Jonathan Fearing was their first dj and then Jellybean really put it on the map by playing most of these songs on here, plus more experimental stuff like Man Parrish,Kraftwerk,Arthur Bakers tracks and some New wave sounds along with Paradise Garage classics .Jellybean doesn’t get enough credit for bringing all these people together under one roof in a time that was deemed dangerous in NYC.It’s why most people never went home before the sun came out ,😁it was safer then go home at 4 am in an area that was a little sketchy back then, but it’s full of galleries now.👍🏼

Funhouse rarely gets a mention in conversations of classic NYC clubs, but it was really another venue, where it was more diverse of the city, yes it was mostly kids from Queens and Brooklyn,Latino,Italian mostly. It could be rough at times, but their hulk like security made sure to put a stop to anything before it got out of control.Jonathan Fearing was their first dj and then Jellybean really put it on the map by playing most of these songs on here, plus more experimental stuff like Man Parrish,Kraftwerk,Arthur Bakers tracks and some New wave sounds along with Paradise Garage classics .Jellybean doesn’t get enough credit for bringing all these people together under one roof in a time that was deemed dangerous in NYC.It’s why most people never went home before the sun came out ,😁it was safer then go home at 4 am in an area that was a little sketchy back then, but it’s full of galleries now.👍🏼
A history story I’ve been waiting to be taught about since I bought a D-train album on a whim about 20 years ago!
