- Professional cyclists are well known for some monster training rides, Annemiek Van Vleuten's 42 hour week on the bike with Mitchelton-Scott in Sardinia is testimony to her savage workouts, but who actually trains the hardest? It might surprise you that nowadays a lot of pros don't actually ride as much as they used to, and mountain bikers, triathletes and rowers all actually work harder. This week we also take a look at the latest cycling news and have all of your favourite features.

What is the biggest week or hardest training session that you have ever done?
Global Cycling Network Going through Basic Military Training in the U.S. Air Force!
Did 22hours of MTB in 2 days this Summer. Didn't regret it though as it was beautiful af (stoneman Switzerland)
First year racing VRS in Australia. Trying to fit 13 hours a week around a full time job and 2.5 hours worth of commuting each day Biggest ride so far, 145km.
I did a 32-hour Ironman training week in 2006, topped off with a 199.8 (seriously - I thought I'd made it to 200, but only realised it was a smidge off after I'd dismounted and carried my bike up to my flat) km. ride with three major mountain passes followed by a 15 km. "brick" run that Sunday.
I used to do a 9-day training camp (from home) every February, scheduling 5 to 6 hour rides for every day from Saturday through to the following Sunday, whatever the weather. Then it was off to Majorca for 2 weeks in March. And I was still only a 2nd Cat!!!!
My best effort ever was 1000 miles in the month of June, 2013. In the middle of the penultimate week, car backed out of it's driveway and I collided with it. My front wheel was pinned under it rear wheel. I borrowed a wheel from my LBS and ended up getting the 1000th mile on June 30th. I was 63 that year.

Fabio pondering his carbon footprint.
I want this to win just to see how Si pronounces your handle!
at 7:40 I'm guessing Danny McCaskill didn't give you his permission
ig2d or maybe he is just so efficient that he doesn’t need to train
@@rene2237 th-cam.com/video/vVrjh-1CTtQ/w-d-xo.html
They weren't lying about his workouts being efficient - Blink and you'll miss it altogether.
Cutaway, aaand, we're back.
Just about died laughing when Chris delivered this gem about Mr. 60:
"You can't help but wonder if NTT wonders if he has that magic stuff up his sleeve still"
I'm sure he's got some of that stuff lying around somewhere.
Ahem "oof."
Caption: While reflecting on his race results, Fabio decided it was time to do a little sole searching.
This is good, too. (But if you've already won...)
I was about to write the same and then saw this. Cap doffed...
366 ride idea: relay ride from Lands end to John O’groats where someone starts from lands end and rides a certain distance (say 50km) before passing on the ‘baton’ (gcn cap?) to another rider who does the same and so on all the way to John O’groats
Caption: Fabio does a little sole searching to figure out how to reduce his carbon footprint.
This should win. Its freakin' brilliant.
I literally just watched the show, and came here to comment just this 👍🏻
@@jan-harmvandermerwe7182 So good! Well done!
Day 366 for the year: 366 km ride divided among all of the presenters with a handoff: Si rides leg 1 so then leg 2 with Opie, Opie rides leg 3 with james. James rides leg 4 with connor, and so on so each presenter gets to ride with another presenter.
Isn't the rumor that Chris is leaving to go pro again?
4:24 Wow. Thomas and Bernal almost taking each other down. This should be a caption contest!
At 22:45 si gives the cleanest cut I've ever seen
Do the Trans Cambrian going East-West, from the English border at Knighton to the coast near Machynlleth, Wales, in ONE DAY, one on a Gravel bike, one on a CX bike, one on a MTB, one on a eMTB and one riding a comparative road route, time wise, from the same starting point to the same finishing point.
Caption: „Carbon Foot Print? Not that much i think.“
Please do a full segment of the Gravel Epic in Morocco when the time comes!! Looks absolutely stunning!
My biggest week (8 days, actually) was when doing the Festive 500 in 2013 when I rode 513 miles (826km) over 37.5 hours of moderately hilly riding.
Ditto on rowers. I worked at a big US college in the east many years ago and our rowers were the best conditioned athletes...by a mile.
Biggest week was bikepacking last year. Just shy of 300mi in 3 days.
Also included the biggest individual ride, my first (and second) century!
3:58 Said once say it again. Dan has proof of him begin the coolest GCN presenter ... Well has ups ... And downs.
Biggest days for me were about 420 km/week, for a little more than a month in São Paulo, Brazil. No open roads, all in-city commuting. Elevation wasn't anything to write home about, but the constant effort of stopping at traffic lights and accelerating again to keep up with the cars made up for some of that.
Caption: Fabio, after being told he had a large carbon footprint.
The biggest “training” week I did was actually with two of my road club’s centuries on a Sunday and the following Saturday, plus some long-ish rides during the week in between. Came to about 350 miles for the week, which has been the most volume for me in one week. Planning to do more than that this year riding the full Erie Canal towpath in New York, that’s going to be about 450 miles in four days.
Love you guys!💙 great episode as usual!👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👊🏻💪🏻
Nevermind Octoberfest, Dan should come to Scotland for the midsummer beer happening - a beer festival with a 100mile bike ride thrown in. I guess you could call that cross training.
Great work by the quiff twins! Really looking forwards to the Patagonia film, it looks like it will be epic.
Biggest regular training week... 33:23hrs 1,176kms 12,042m general base with extra elevation
LEAP year: Presenter challenge - how far can you leap on a bike? Variety of methods should be tried - bunny hops, ramps, jumps, drop-offs...
I’ve done a 1400km week, as well as a 500km non-stop ride predominately on a crit track (about 380 laps - made sense logistically, not mentally). The 500km was for the Festive 500 Strava Challenge; figured I’d just knock it off all at once #efficiency (because I am in Oz, I was the first in the world to achieve it too)
Given the many medical procedures for professional cyclists related to arteries, perhaps GCN could do a feature on issues like external Iliac Artery Endofibrosis? Many cyclists, speed skaters and runners suffer from this and the issue has often been un/misdiagnosed. More and more athletes turn to surgery. Understanding the issue and recognizing symptoms could help a lot of athletes suffering at the moment...
When you guys are ready to check out the circuit trails in the Philadelphia area, let me know. I know most of them well enough to tell you the image you show at 17:18 was taken with a drone and is inside the Valley Forge National Park. This section of trail is a small part of my usual 50mile route.
I was hoping to hear Ollie and his German accent announce the new GCN Deutsch channel :-D
GCN Auf Deutsch...finally!! danke!! Best from Germany, keep going hard !
Hardest bike ride was definitely the tour du mont blanc last summer, 332kms, 8350m of elevation, 15h on the bike. With the San carlo climb (10kms averaging 10%) after 210kms 😅 one hell of a ride
seems like the editor forgot to put in the McCaskill clip, oops!
Watch it again and try not to blink. They weren't lying when they said he was efficient.
Caption: Fabio checking out his R sole!
GCN, I regularly ride with an 82 year-old who was recently National Champion in USA. He's fitter than almost anybody else I know.
Good german by Chris.
I don't know if I will stay with this new channel. I love the british humour.
BTW: Did anyone told you that this year has 366 days?
What about a presenter challenge at this day? Something off the bike. Like rowing or skiing. Or maybe Martyn Ashtons Trials academy.
Caption: Oh man, not clipless again.
My biggest 12 days were 65h of riding in Mallorca 😤🤯😵
Hi guys ,Ken here . It's winter time here so I practice yoga like 12 times a week , being retired I have time . I plan on dropping 3 yoga classes and start going to spin class , the trainers are cool but a room full of people in a spin class is way more fun for me . Also on a side not I'm 63 yrs old .
My biggest week was 1,242 km in 7 days, with 15,663 m elevation. But that wasn't a training week, it was what I'd been training _for_
Hi guys. Love the show (and the socks!!). One of the areas of the USA that has a really impressive bicycle network is Nashville, TN. Most people would avoid it thinking it only has two types of music (Country & Western) but they’d be wrong. It has heaps of great bars and restaurants and live music in every venue - blues, jazz, rock and of course C&W. Add to that the fact that it’s the No 1 spot for Hen’s Nights in the USA. ALL OF THAT PLUS GREAT RIDING! WHO COULD WANT MORE!!
My biggest ride was when in became the youngest ever person to do a off road Everest 14 hours £2651 raised for cry and clic sargent
Amazing ride!
Thanks a lot ! Check it out on the everesting website(filter age youngest to oldest)!

As an old git ex-marathon/ultra runner. The issue is without a doubt injury, plus track sessions may only last an hour, but 200-1600m reps a) killer. b)this is where the injuries get exposed or ping. Long runs are a mere 2-3hours, and recovery 30mins to 1 hour. Plus 3 time plus in the gym. And that as amateur 12-15 hours a week on heavy 100 mile weeks.
Though many runners now use cycling to supplement long recovery runs, app 2-3 hours, worked for me as a former cyclist, plus I could get sweet revenge on my faster younger team mates....on a fixed, oh the joy of 40 years of 'wiring' can't beat it....

The rear facing stem off seat post is quite common for the stoker's bars on tandems.
14:53. Yous must have got very lucky with the weather for those 7 days. It rains nearly every day of the year over here
Yeah I do rowing and it's fun. And I thing this season it's gonna be be a good cycling year too.
No mention of the training required for darts players.
I'm so glad to see that GCN is recognizing the enormous number of retirees who are actively involved in cycling. I would really love to see a new GCN presenter who is 60+ years old and who'd offer interesting and relevant content for us. Come on guys, it's time for a real senior citizen in the ranks of all you young whipper snappers!
hey, i love your videos. you made my start to cycle a lot more
I was at the exact same place in Ireland last July. It looked the same that day too.
That was actually a good one Si!
Longest ride I have done is 150km, defiantly don't go for the distance, it included 4 reps of box hill though ;)
18:25 - ''you can't help but wonder if NTT are going to be hoping that he has some of that _magic stuff_ up his sleeve still to try and turn the team around'' - that is a very diplomatic way of putting it. They're probably hoping Mr 60 has lots of ''magic stuff'' up his sleeve.
The only reason to go to Andermatt for is to do the Furka - Nufenen - Gotthard loop. Simply epic.
366 day of the year? I'm thinking a Zwift Everest attempt for the GCN gang? Plenty of pain to watch in a video

According to Strava July 8th to July 14th last year I did 251.8 miles for the week and 750.2 for that month with the longest ride @99.4miles. Mentally beat as I was only expecting 80 miles that day, but the temp climbed to 97 degrees in north Texas, and I didn’t have .6 mile left in me :0/

Try swimming Si, up for training at 6 am for draining 5 days a week and then spending less than a minute in the water on race days
my more busy week was race on Sunday at Argentina, drive on monda back to Santiago, Chile, and race at chilean patagonia on saturday, more than 300 kms of race plus non race kilometers plus more than 3000 kilometers driving between races
For the leap year, how about factory tours? Maybe with SIS, Enervit or Namedsport.

Naturally the number of cyclists above 60 years grows, as with the growing popularity of e-bikes makes cycling again accessible for them. The same reason why the number of accidents is growing too. Just think about it. Lower reaction times combined with high speeds and people who underestimate the risk.
Caption: Jacobsen contemplating the meaning of cycling by searching his own sole.
Leuven? Where Stella Artois is produced? I got drenched there while passing through en route from Paris to Amsterdam about ten years ago, during an unexpected and humongous downpour which flooded the entire town and surrounding areas
Fabio got his KEO diet wrong despite despite his cleating success.
So Sunday.. long wait!
Organise a massive group ride in Bath on the extra day of the year!
Peeeeease, make a filter or something with that "hour of power" intro. It looks sooooo amazing!!
I think Trace Velo is probably annoyed enough already.
It reminds me of the intro and outro clips used during televised races in the 1980’s. LMAO

I don't have hard training rides, but I do have good ones. Sometimes a few block workouts, endurance workouts, tempo duration, but all that is indicated by fondo what to do when. In addition to fondo mountain bike, I also do a few times a week. This summer I will also go on a bicycle camp, with a long ride, MTB, BMX and riding an indoor track with my bicycle at the 'Flemish cycling center Eddy Merckx'.

You can official watch the GCN Show episodes everyday for a year. 366 episodes and this year is not a leap year. 👍
Day 366 ride idea:- every presenter should be out riding on the same day, since 29th Feb is a Saturday you could arrange group rides for ordinary riders to ride with your presenters in various locations around the countries GCN operates in. If this idea is accepted can the south west Scotland ride start in Ayr at 9:30am please.
Hoping Riis has some of that magic stuff up his sleeve.....I see what you did there 👌🏻
Feb 29th Idea: Seeing how much GCN loves The Sufferfest - why not becomes Knights of Sufferlandia (10 back to back sessions...)? I know it's not outdoors, but you might even be able to get a few people to join in from across the globe...
I think she mentioned, from “Leuven” in Belgium
Correct "From Leuven in Belgium"... I pass that point 2 to 3 time a week during training :D

My longest day on the bike was 240km, biggest week is yet to come. I'm planning to ride to a holiday address in France, 1150km from my home (standard week for Egan Bernal I guess..). BUT I've got no experience in bikepacking. I would very much like to do this in 8 days, so around 140km per day. I do like to cycle, am motivated to put in some work, but have no clue whether this is achievable or just plain crazy. Any experienced riders over here with some (much needed) advice?
for caption of the week , which one goes on which foot, or first
My bet for the next channel is going to be GGN Global Gravel Network!
Missed showing A pic of the first 2 bikes at the end
My longest ride was 114 miles and I did it round trip so I racked up 238 miles in a week
As I’m turning 61 next month, on the side of caution as I only got in 4401 miles last year according to Strava
I’ve been subscribed to GCN since the early days and rarely miss The GCN Show, but my wife always comes in and asks “are you watching Global Cycling Nonsense “ 🤣
😂 Imagine what happens when my wife catches me watching it.
Love that battery news!
