  • Los Angeles's Staples Center sold out for the inaugural game of the 2002 #NBAFinals2002 #FinalsLakersNets, with nearly 19,000 on hand. The Nets trotted out a lineup of Kidd, Kittles, Martin, Van Horn and MacCulloch to hold up against the two-time defending and heavily favored champions. The Lakers brought out Derek Fisher, Rick Fox, Shaquille O'Neal, Robert Horry, and #KobeBryant, who drew the assignment of guarding Kidd. New Jersey head coach Byron Scott, a member of the Showtime #Lakers, received a standing ovation.
    Taking advantage of a late arrival to the arena by New Jersey, L.A. dominated the first 17 minutes of play with a 42-19 score by the 6:41 mark in the second quarter. From that point on, the Nets went on a 17-6 run to close the lead to a respectable 12. They had no answer for O'Neal, however, who had bullied MacCulloch into 16 points and 6 rebounds by half-time. The Nets outscored the Lakers in the third but stood steadfast as Bryant scored 11 of his 22 in the third.
    " You can't dig yourself a hole, get down by 19 or 20 points and expect to win. We just dug ourselves a hole against the champions. "
    -Lucious Harris, Sports Illustrated[28]
    New Jersey battled back, coming as close as three several times in the final quarter. Desperate to take the lead, they utilized the "Hack-a-Shaq" strategy midway in the fourth. It backfired, as O'Neal was 5-8 from the free throw line and had 16 points and 9 rebounds in the period alone.
    New Jersey was doomed by their late start and poor shooting. The Nets, who shot 45% from the field and 74% on free throws were 39% and 57% respectively. Kidd finished with a triple-double, the 26th in Finals history and the first since Charles Barkley's in the 1993 series.

      Yea just like the 76ers the year before, no answer for Shaq. The Nets were a smaller team that wanted to run & the Lakers just suffocated them. Jason Kidd had a pretty good series, but couldn’t put together a super human effort like Iverson did in Game 1 in 2001 to steal a game

    • @steez5769
      @steez5769 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only because Lakers era shaq was a mismatch for every team lol Those Nets still had a really good team team in Kidd, Kittles, Jefferson & Martin. Imagine if they had a great center at the time like Alonzo Mourning or Kevin Garnett. Todd MacCulloch on Shaq? C’mon now. And even though the Lakers won 4-0, only game 2 was a blow out. Game 1, 3 & 4 were all close.

      @@steez5769this what im taking about kobe guarded by kenyon martin and kidd and the other one but shaq guard by a center whos not in the top on his position before that mutumbo but already 37 years old so shaq dominate literally in the finals because washed or plumber is his opponent. but in the playoffs in the west kobe is the best player.

      Worst Finals ever. The Nets made it because the East stunk until Detroit in 04. Look at the disparity in talent amongst all star rosters between west vs east in the early 00s.....a joke.

    I remember when Shaq first got drafted. There was NEVER any player like him. He was a rookie and he was LEAN! Not lean like Dwight Howard. Lean like Arnold Schwarzenegger ready for Mr Olympia contest. No joke he gained about 80 lbs over his career. Maybe more. Even in this video has prob 50lbs more than his rookie year. Maybe 75lbs? When he played in Orlando, he was truly Amazing. Imagine Shaq being able to get vertical and jump far. He used to jump from the foul line and catch lob passes for dunks! He was FKN AWESOME! For real go watch some full Orlando games from his rookie season.

    Hey, groupies, SACRAMENTO should be playing the Nets in these Finals, remember??!!?!? I know you Kobe-cheerleaders wanna forget about this and erase it from your conscioousness, but Stern and the NBA robbed ONCE AGAIN the sport in order to favor their favorite protectee, Phil Jackson, and the traditionally great LA dynasty!! Webber and his crew meant to clinch it that season, they were the rightful KINGS!!!
