The cough didn't affect the match, because Smith said he didn't hear it. Professional dart players have to have the ability to ignore distractions such as crowds whistling, booing etcetera. It does have a definite advantage for whomever the crowd supports, and is far louder and distracting than the cough. It finished Pipe's career. Whether it should have become such a big issue is the question?

I think it's probably done intentionally, or even just subconsciously, his competitive spirit showing through.
With all the noise in darts arenas anyway I'm not sure the thrower would even notice.
Dude still had to play well to win.

Why was he looking at the score just before he coughed. A gentleman would have turned to the crowd to cough.
