The thing I remember most about Washington Ave is driving down it with my family in the mid 70's in our old station wagon during holiday season and seeing the Christmas decorations hanging across the street and on the light poles. It was magical.
As a member of the Binghamton area community, I am very happy to see the influx of investment, here, at the mall, and in Binghamton. I hope a large portion of it benefits local business ("mom and pop" style) so that all the profits aren't drained away to corporate interests.
It looks like the upgrades to the avenue are going to be really nice I’m wondering if the buildings will be improved and the business’s will come back that’s a lot of empty space thank you Frank for the great video and keeping us all updated will be in town next month staying at the transition hotel I remember playing golf on the homestead course back in the 70s and early 80s we will be there September 11th and 12th
I remember walking the Ave when I was a little kid in the '60's, shopping with my grandmother at Woolworth's and JJ Newberry's five and dime stores. My grandmother would give me one or two pennies from her change so I could go to the gum machines at the entrances and get a gumball or two. Went to Burt's or Kline's in early fall to get some clothes for school, and if lucky I could pick out my new shoes and sneakers at the Endicott Johnson shoe store. I was bummed out in high school to find out the gumball machines were 10 cents. I pay $2,500 mo. rent now... used to be able to buy a new car for that. Whew, gettin' old.
The yellow and red on the conduit is probably to let the installers keep track of where each end of the final installed line is. They need to document everything accurately so that future technicians and builders know which conduit leads where. The colored tape is a temporary measure until the installation is completed and the documentation generated.
The sign costs around 25 to 50 bucks, but you have to pay a DOT employee or contractor to install it. Not to mention the "red tape" and scheduling involved. But in reality any Joe blow with a wrench could install it in 5 mins.
I remember Washington Ave when I was a kid in the 70s and early 80s. It was probably already past its peak but was still considered a pretty posh shopping area (until the Oakdale Mall took over everything). I also remember it was very pretty at Christmas. Do you know Frank are they doing anything more than just new sidewalks and repaved streets? Business incentives? Why no trees? Its seems like a lot of money wasted if its just going to be a place where vagrants can shamble past still empty storefronts but on new sidewalks.
They tore down the dunkin donuts in Appalachian, just to rebuild it. I'm sure the new building is an improvement, but from the outside it doesn't look like a new building. (Just newly decorated)
Thanks for the latest update. Is the thought that a new road, sidewalks and street lights will bring back business to the Ave? The buildings look like they are in rough shape.
YOU KNOW THERE FRANK THE ONLY SOAP OPERAS ON TV SHOW I HAVEN'T SEEN WAS AS THE WORLD TURNS, ONE LIFE TO LIVE, PASSIONS, PORT CHARLES, SANTA BARBARA, THE GUIDING LIGHT, ALL MY CHILDREN, SUNSET BEACHES, ANOTHER WORLD
There are a number of Bangladesh business that opened up on Washington Ave. They all seem to be rude and inconsiderate of people and their surroundings.

Me too! ❤😊
Southern Tier usually had
more snow (i.e. much
more "Christmas-see")
than "back home" in NYC
Great update, Frank! Also, awesome shirt!
Thanks!
