- Hello there everyone, here is the PV or MV for Gardenia by MALICE MIZER, in 1080p HD quality. Since the PV was never released on DVD, we only have a crappy quality version available on the internet. I did everything I could to digitally remaster the crappy version, so, it isn't a DVD rip, it's an upscale, but a very very good upscale. (Read description for more information.)
Gardenia is one amazing, amazing song, this completely defines MALICE MIZER. It's got an up-beat tempo, it sounds a little bit happy, but is full of melancholy, it contains the usual classical influences, here, the strings, it's got the gothic influences, the organ, it's got rock influences, and of course, a powerful, well-crafted singing melody, sung by Klaha's beautiful voice. And the music video has got a lot of beauty in it, the flower and doll, the costumes, the colours, the make-up, and so on. The only thing that is missing from the typical MALICE MIZER sound in this song would be the "twin guitars", but you can't do everything in one song, huh. This song was also a huge refreshment, coming right after all the darkness of Bara no Seidou. This song promised a new era, but sadly, the band disbanded the same year. I'm happy they left us with these three last singles, because they're certainly some of the best songs of the band.
Gardenia is also my personal favourite song of the band.
As said before, the Gardenia PV was never released on a DVD, but it was initially planned to release it on a DVD, called Gardenia ~de l'image~, alongside the Beast of Blood PV DVD. And it suddenly got cancelled, without any explanation, while the Beast of Blood DVD got released. On the Cardinal DVD, they have a live version mixed with some imagery, but it is clear the production quality and decoration are different in Cardinal, that means they reshot it. There is only one explanation: They lost the original files. Probably a computer crash. It's really sad, there was probably also some fantastic "making of" footage lost.
This PV was recorded from a TV-interview called "Music chat", we all owe the person who decided to record his TV many thanks, because without him we wouldn't even have a bad quality version. Also, the TV version of the PV is shortened to about 3:44 minutes, while the original song is 5:14.
As you can see, the PV is the length of the original song, why is that? Because I mixed the TV PV with the recreated PV from Cardinal (that was mixed with a live version, look below for a link), and with the commercial of Gardenia from Bara no denshou (that was HD, but only a few seconds, but I managed to put it in).

But why did not you use similar moments from Cardinal for this video? For example, for 1'st chorus at the end when Klaha sings "dakishimete hanasanari you ni" you could use similar moment from 2'nd chorus from Cardinal. I think, it would have looked better.
And why you think, that PV moments from Cardinal re-recorded? I always thougt, that it's from original, but untreated (whithout whiteness).
I'm not really sure what you're referring to, but yeah maybe the lip syncing on the Cardinal parts could have been better, but luckly it's just a very minor detail haha. Maybe you're referring to live parts, I dunno and I didn't want to include any live parts in it. And I think they rerecorded it since they just never released the original on the DVD. The set is also a bit different, no structures, only trees, and it's very yellow on cardinal (I brightened the Cardinal parts a lot to fit the original PV better, and of course I darkened the original). I'm not sure of course, I just think it.

Yes, I'm about lips. Klaha sings this words, and this part of video is different from same moment in PV. But, if you think that it's minor detail - it's your choice.
And fact that this PV was never released say us almost nothing. In 90's it's was not rare.
I say more, they (all bands) often record live-concerts and release only parts of them, or use some moments for footage for some songs, or just only record and do nothing.

I know most fans prefer the poppier Gackt era but I absolutely love the stuff they did with Klaha. There's just so much more depth. They really started to stretch their limits. It still blows my mind that this is basically pop rock in Japan becuase quite frankly the composition and execution of these songs is absolutely out of this world.
Well, for me it's like:
Gackt: Light / Sun
Klaha: Dark / Moon
Maybe Malice Mizer it's not the type of Gackt music since their music seem a little bit dark, like this Gardenia, and he's a little bit uncomfortable with it.
I prefer Gackt and Tetsu but some of Klaha's music is definitely my favorite, like this song. :D Klaha's era is so beautiful and underrated.

It seems like they were gearing up for a great album including the singles Gardenia, Beast of Blood and Garnet but then ultimately decided to go on "hiatus".
However, due to that their discography remains immaculate. Unlike many other bands and artists who continue forever and ultimately end up having lots of flaws in their back catalog or tarnish their reputation
I love Klaha voice so much, he sounds so powerful yet mysterious. I can't understand how there are people who don't like his era, I honestly prefer his voice even to Gackt

Malice Mizer was my first introduction to Vkei and even though my tastes changed, I still love these old songs. I know that most people love Gackt era but I always preffered Klaha and Gardenia is the superior song to me

Gacktが抜けて、すぐにkamiが亡くなってすぐレコード会社と契約切れて、インディーズになったんだよね。やっぱり5人だったから人気もあったんだろうね。いまだにGacktが失踪したとかあったけど、それだけでメンバーとの仲が悪くなるものか謎です。多くを語らなかった彼らだったから、ファンの間でいろんな憶測が出て、GacktVSマリスミゼルのファンが対立したんだよね。今だから真実を話してくれてもいいんじゃないかなぁって思います。メンバーと和解してるんだから。天国にいるkamiは、それを望んでいたんじゃないかなぁって思います。

25周年の時にmanaの方から誘ったらしいですが、Gackt側は返事なかったのか、断ったのかわかりませんが実現しなかったですね。

15 here but man...the memories of this band and these singles coming out right after I got into them and had explored their minimal but excellent back catalogue! Such amazing nostalgia. Everyone sure did think my friend and I were weird but we fully embraced it. Had Malice Mizer, Moi Dix Mois and many other J-rock posters covering room walls!
can never thank you enough for putting together the puzzle of the "gardenia" PV. this is my favourite malice mizer song and its PV is stunning, the aesthetic chosen being the white with the heavy bloom is very appealing. It's several levels or dimensions beyond the europop of my 90's.
Why is this?
Because Malice Mizer perfectly combines pop with baroque, including perfection of costumes.
They take what is undisputably good and combine it, and the result is superior art.
I am playing this on the piano now, and it feels like Bach. (I also play Bach).
I've watched this so many times, it's just stunning in all ways and I can't thank you enough for your contribution to fellow Malice Mizer fans!

I've been following your channel for a while, and I just gotta say, thank you so much for all the hard work you put into your videos. This was the first video I saw that got me into Malice Mizer and I instantly fell in love with both the music and the band members, I don't think I've ever gotten so obsessed with a band before this one, but it's a good thing~
I discovered your videos when I was really stressed out with coursework and struggling to get through college algebra, and Malice Mizer always helped me feel better, I still listen to them when I'm stressed or anxious and it makes me happy. Their aesthetic and the style of their music (as well as their good looks lol), inspired me a lot in my recent novels and it's often my go-to music when I'm writing. Because of your videos I've also gotten into other visual kei bands like Moi Dix Mois, Versailles, and Lareine, and I've become a big fan~
