Imagine before the Europeans arrived to NZ The Maori were in tribes waring against each other defeated enemies were slaves and had to build or hunt for them women where raped and forced into marriage a chief could have many wives slaves would also be forced to fight and if food was scarce the would be eaten. Very little is known if Maori could sing prior to the Europeans they could speak a language but couldn't write there language and their past history was told as stories passed down generations. Europeans arrived and taught Maori how to write taught there vowels A, E, I, O , U. Also they brought Instruments and taught them guitar and how to sing and folk music songs which became Maori music. Over the years Maori was able to make their own music the Haka you see the All Blacks perform is onle one of many. That one was performed by a Maori chief fighting the British he made the words and all joined in women, children and elderly as a show of resiliance towards there British enemy. British soldiers helped some Maori tribes defeat other tribes for land. Most Maori battles against the British failed only a few Battles where won . The British wanted to protect Maori from other countries like France and to bring law and order so they proposed them becoming British citizens. Most Maori agreed or submitted to the British but a few tribes refused. Whalers and Missionaries wanted Maori to decide there own laws and fate and a battle divided Maori and British against other Maori and Europeans. In the end The treaty was made which most Chiefs signed giving British Governance over the country in return to respect Maori rights and traditions.

The NZ wars had Māori on one side with early European settlers and Māori on the other side with the British. It was the British that wanted to insert Law in this Lawless country but some early settlers did not want British law that is so Māori can continue with there ways of live both positive and there negative ways untouched by the crown but then there was those Europeans that enjoyed doing bad things Grap murder etc. and did not want British laws. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_Wars
