Using momentum can give you a false sense of the vehicle's capability. You should find a off-road park and play around with the 4Runner's A-TRAC, rear locker, center diff lock, MTS, crawl control etc... That will give you a better feel of what 4WD features to use and when to use them. Not sure if you have ATRAC (off-road traction control) engaged or not because it would have gotten you through this section as well. You have to keep the throttle on the car (1500-2000 rpm) for the system to detect slip and brake the spinning wheel. It's a weird feeling if you have driven non-traction control 4x4s before.
