FROM BEGINNER TO ??? - My 3 Year Tennis Journey / Progression / Improvement [2019-2022]

  • Watch me try and learn to play tennis from scratch without lessons. I started playing tennis 3 years ago after watching the Federer - Djokovic Wimbledon final. Instantly hooked, I started filming myself so I could tweak my game. Originally I just did this for myself. But I thought why not upload it to TH-cam. Videos from other players like Dill, Mark Sansait, TennisTroll etc I really enjoy. So who knows, maybe someone will enjoy my playing too.
Be sure to subscribe, cuz I will be uploading more matches I play in 2023 from now on!
Also if you're curious about my music, you can follow me on Instagram, TikTok, TH-cam, Facebook and Twitter:

I have played tennis for 17 years, coached for 6 years. This is an unbelievable 3 year transition, keep it up! My advice you you, is to start drilling that forehand and never underestimate how footwork can help too control you’re game.

    • @NathanPlaysTennis
      @NathanPlaysTennis  ปีที่แล้ว +6

That means a lot man. I'm working on that forehand. Hopefully you can see some progress in my next videos.

l love how you play with so much freedom. It reminds me about how tennis can be used as a device for freedom and self-expression rather than it being winning and losing and feeling happy or sad as a result of it. As a competitive tennis player myself, l used to always play with fear and honestly l still do in important points which, really detracted my love for the sport over the years. However, l find it inspiring that you are able to smash the ball as hard as possible without much care of missing it. It's great to see.

Yo! I can tell you're destined for the 5.0+ level, and that's a level not many people reach. You've set up a great foundation: You've got a great habit of exaggerating your split step, taking the return early with your weight moving forward, good game sense, know when to hit a rally ball and when to finish it, good control at the net, and most of all -- passion! Subscribed to follow your progress.

Hi Nathan, your progression has been phenomenal, especially your serve and lightness of touch. I started playing a year ago and, like you, I'm obsessed. Unlike you, though, I'm still very much a beginner. Well done, mate

Dude this is insane progression. I've played over 20yrs and on a reslly high level, now I'm a coach. The most impressive thing to me is your ability to hit from different heights and take the ball early, that is something that comes naturally w time, but you hava mastered it unbeliavebly fast!!! CONGRATS!!

    • @sausbaus

Impressive progression for someone who is self taught and learned as an adult. You clearly have some talent for tennis, and passion. I think regular lessons and hitting with players who are stronger and more consistent than you are would enable you to take a great leap forward very quickly.

Remarkable progress in three, four years! Inspiring stuff for players struggling to get over the plateau of development as the steep learning curve stalls gradually. You are doing something right - and have some serious talent for (the) sport. As I have always said sports and music mix well and go hand in hand nicely; especially a sport like tennis goes with music like a glove in a hand as the rhytmic, non-stop movement reminding of a dance, sharp timing of strokes plus the fine-tuned consistency are crucial factors for success. - Let’s keep playing tennis and music/instruments!

great improement over 3 years. Youve done really well on the serve motions. A lot of these opponenets youve been playing have weird janky out of rythym serves, and theyve probably been plaing twice or three times as long as you. You've got a good understanding of the rythym of moving each part of your body to contribute to the uncurling whip to get serve power. It's probably the hardest shot to learn from a beginner and youve done great

Wow mate i have had a similar thing this year.
I've started playing when i was 7 until 10 then dropped until my 20s just re started about 2/3 years ago too
Never changed my easter forehand grip nor my one handed backhand.
Decided to get some lessons to fix my bad habits and im recording majority of my sessions to monitor my progress.
It's crazy about a year ago (before lessons) i was stiff and hittin quite late
After few lessons and a lot of sessions i managed to fix this and feeling more to get towards the ball and hit on time.
Im still not where i want to be because maybe im too hard on myself but i am a strong believer that through practice i can get closer to that shape.
Great video and great way to show your progression.

Agree with all who say that this is an unbelievable learning speed. You've got Kyrgios serve down the the T. It seems you did the youtube coaching approach and I think that is the right way. So many coaches out there that do not know how to teach and let people do the wrong thing over and over. I think it's lesson to them to see how good you've become entirely on your own.

  • @LetsBuildThatApp

Just amazing to see how much fun you're having with tennis, most people are so damn serious about it. I'm also going through the same journey with covid tennis coming from a basketball background and I'm having a blast. I know all about the backhand vs forehand issue! Just one tip is to maintain a stable core and don't open too early on the forehand side. In other words, copy what you're doing well on the backhand and great results will come in due time. PS: forget about all of the "atp forehand" videos, it produces very unreliable strokes for us self-learners.
