Here we are with the latest installment of Ridiculous Characters of Fighting game history! Today Baiken will be our focus, the famous Samurai from Guilty Gear! Baiken will be joining GG Strive about a month from this posting, so why not get caught up on her backstory and what she is all about! These style of videos are outside the usual wheelhouse here on the Rooflemonger channel so if you could give a Like/Share it would be sincerely appreciated. Holy shit I just realized something. Baiken is the female Jaapanese version of Guts. They are both missing an eye them both are missing an arm they both use prosthetics both have cannons on there arms and are both loners and have 1 person they want to see killed.
As one of the few Baiken fans from back in the original game, long before those (ahem) big additions to her design, it warms my heart to see how popular she's become.
Oddly enough after seeing her old looks, She always has those. It's just that she just have a bad posture,And more skinny looking body making them looks small.
I just love Baiken. I love her personality. She's sexy, like Revy from Black Lagoon. She's rough, foul-mouthed, and informal. She likes to smoke and drink. She has a disability yet is deadly with her sword. She's a swordsmen. She's just awesome.
Bruh, yes! Revy and Baiken are definitely top shelf hottie who will either murder their bottoms/partners or ride them into a coma and the partners would love it.
Oddly, her response to Happy Chaos…was oddly mellow when facing him which is…odd. At this point I’m just happy for her interactions with her power bottom Anji.

It sucks that the story's set up such that sol pretty much got dibs on happy chaos but I hope she at least gets some hits in on the guy if he's back in the second story. She's earned it. Dude killed her entire country I mean.
I have a feeling that Delilah might try to steer Baiken away from her path of revenge just like what Anji has been doing though there was little success on his part. Considering based on the teaser trailer she's trying to be a friend/mother figure to her, but she can't do that if she's burdened with all of that bitterness and rage.
Thank you for covering baiken, baiken and eltnum (unist) were my first characters that i genuinely sat down and learned and got the appeal of fighting games i hope you can someday cover eltnum too love your content and merry Christmas! :D
If I could recommend a character, I think Zasalamel would be a neat one to go into detail on one day. As far as SoulCalibur picks go he's pretty out there.
I do wanna point out she can TK her Yozansen in XRD too which is what made her strong on offense too (9f instant overhead). Hope the devs stay true to her design somewhat (mechanically at least cause we seen she looks basically the same) in Strive

Celebrating her upcoming release later in 2022 I'm glad you made something like this to help people like me who started in Strive get used to the lore which is a DAUNTING task with how much lore there is. One fun tidbit you may not know is that Anji and Baiken are childhood friends. According to datamined lines, their relationship might lean towards something more romantic in Strive. Baiken's had a grudge against Anji in the past because he used to work with Asuka, whom she blames.
It definitely is not romantic lmao where have you been getting your info? Anji has always been affiliated with baiken since they were both from the colony I'm pretty sure most people know that. Baikens character is not meant to have a romantic counterpart. The only thing we see is Johnny being her drinking buddy that's all.

Hunh, for once a video about Baiken for once that doesn't spend 80% of it's runtime on, "PeOpLE dON't aCHUaLLY pICk tHiSH ChAraCTuR! ShEEs JuSh BooBS!" as someone who favors grapplers and defensive/counter characters in fighting games I find Baiken to be a pretty fun character and have ever since she was in XX.
Defensive wall? That's exactly why I enjoy Jiren. Sexy killer Samurai! Oh man what's not to love. Tell me she's got a command grab and I'm in love. Take away her appearance, I'd still main that!
Releasing Baiken right after Happy Chaos is poetic and probably in an intentional way. Baiken is hunting That Man for revenge, and she's releasing right after Happy Chaos aka That Man as if chasing him. Good move, imho.
I don't know Xrd so good, tried it a few times then moved on lol. Xrd is my blindspot in guilty gear cause I didn't really play it much so my bad. I was a x2 guy and now a strive guy.

I was also thinking Ino was a reference to Brian Eno from Roxy music who in his own right after going solo pretty much changed the game for musicians making original movie scores. In the mid 70s he changed the game by making a huge switch from the glam rock style of Roxy music into the most influential dive into ambient music and producing and working with artists such as David Bowie, the talking heads and king crimson.
Lotta my favourite characters are kinda nobodies lol. Like T.Hawk from Street Fighter, Vice from KoF, Paul from Tekken, they are not heavy hitters in their own franchises. I mostly like big people who smash other peoples faces good 🐵

If anyone's interest, there's a whole movie series based on the character of Tange Sazen, a nihilist samurai with one eye and one arm, in almost every movie chasing a treasure hidden in a jar or something like that. The first movie is from 1935, so he has an almost 100 years history. It's most probably Baiken was based on Tange Sazen, But if not - it's a big coincidence. More than that - there's a spin-off made in 1969, called "Lady Sazen" where Sazen is a badass woman, and of course she had a hard childhood. Probably the best movie from this series is the one from 1966, where Sazen has no family, lives alone and is treated by most of the people like a monster, i watched most of these movies so i can recommend them, even if the basic plot is almost every time the same.
It's funny how voluptuous Baiken's appearance became since her first appearance in Guilty Gear as a secret character. Until I saw her in Guilty Gear XX I thought she was male.
Whats the theme playing in the background during the video ? Also great work with the history of Baiken ! I never played guilty gear, just usually enjoy it's OST's, but Baiken's designe was just so amazing that it quickly turned into one of my favourite characters.
They made a Contra game with Konami back on the PS3 and one of the DLC characters was a female samurai, that was interesting. Definitely would love a Platinum take on her though!
A lot of characters in Guilty Gear would make for great protagonists in action games, I kinda hope we get more non fighting game Guilty Gear spin-offs in the future
baiken is so fucking cool. if slayer really is next i feel like Strive is finally getting characters that feel iconically Guilty Gear to me, and mechanically one of the greatest issues Strive has it how dominant big pressure "unga" characters are, imo due to the launch roster not including particularly diverse archetypes. So far season 1 has been a home run in alleviating this problem, but Baiken is a character who gives some of the top characters a tough matchup to worry about, and Pot and some others another favorable MU. No matter what Rev 2 Leo Mains say this is the start of what the Strive roster really needs, i think.
Some nomenclature that needs to be clarified. When you put up an attack before an opposing attack hits and your character intercepts the incoming attack, that's a "counter stance" move. When you do a move out of blockstun, that's a "guard reversal." I see people calling guard reversal moves "counters" or "alpha counters" a lot. "Alpha counter" is a guard reversal, so that works, but it's still weird to apply a SF Alpha term to other games, especially since the guard reversal concept existed before Alpha. Hell, other characters in GG could guard reversal, it's called "Dead Angle Attack," but what makes Baiken's special DAAs so powerful is that they don't cost half your Tension and have a multitude of effects. The difference between the two types of moves is important because one requires quick preemptive reactions or guessing that leaves you open if you're wrong, while the other is a reward for defending.
That's a problem with fighting games, some characters and arcs never develop and their conclusions are kind of rushed, others like KoF dismiss the previous fighters just because new, guilty tries to put them all but that leaves characters like Faust or Baiken feeling out of place.

Baiken was inspired by Kenshin Himura, which really shows in her initial spritework. She used to be a cool female rônin with a hint of wild, careless sex appeal. That's before her Revelator redesign turned her into a booby lady, drawing all the milk deprived plebs to the yard. Don't get me wrong she's still cool as heck, but I wish ASW didn't go that hard, because her.. assets.. became the focal point of an otherwise much richer and nuanced character.
Her kimono is crisply open now like she woke up and did that to get the perfect breast window. It used to look like her kimono came loose from moving and fighting and she didnt care enough to fix it.
Isn't she underrated in terms of power though especially if you take into account alternate endings they may not be what she did but what she could do like killing Ino Fighting Justice fighting Kai and an alternative timeline Becoming this Notorious killer and fighting dizzy and testament. Also didn't it take 3 people originally just to seal Justice away and didn't sol also get blasted back by asuka in that same game Did that baiken and gets to him
First of all, Happy Holidays Rooflemonger! Your videos have been a great, consistent and concise source of fighting game news for as long as I've known of the channel. Keep up the great work! Second, after watching the video I really appreciate how straightfoward Baiken's story is. A traumatized character who devoted herself to revenge, crippling injuries be damned. One of the reasons why I picked her up back in X and X2 is because of her relative simplicity compared to other characters.
It's become a trope to imply the reason people like Baken is b/c of her chest size, which is bullshit. People like her b/c the design is cool. One-armed samurai would work even in a B cup.
@@rooflemonger Xrd was released in 2014, which was the height of the FGC popularity, so more people were exposed to Guilty Gear than ever before. So it is very possible that she got the vast majority of her fans when there was suddenly increased fandom of the FGC and Guilty Gear.
@@rooflemonger The big pair are definitely a plus for her but she already had a cool design without them and if I had gotten into the series earlier or if her redesign had more modest proportions I know I would've liked her anyway. Badass grizzled beautiful amputee samurai woman is already one helluva character I'm super into, the Oppai aspect is simply the icing on the stacked up cake for me personally.
That's some deep copium you're having, Baiken was the forefront of Guilty Gear crossovers with gacha games. Why? Because she has become the no.1 waifu of GG after her redesign in Xrd and is used to market towards waifu collecting gacha players. And why look down on her chest size? Imagine if someone wants to tone down Sol's shoulders or Potemkin's arms, why can men be extremely masculine but women can't be extremely feminine?
At first guilty gear game I'm so confused with Baiken moveset, as far as I see from majority of characters have kind of rush down type, like Sol, Chipp, and then all around type like Ky, charge type, and grapple type, but I think she can't be one of those type, after a lot of people said she's kinda defensive type now all of her movesets are more make sense 😁
I would like to say that baiken was able kill ino in one of the non-canon ending in xx and sure you could say that because it's not Canon it doesn't really matter but to me that fact thats even an ending to begin with shows how strong she is
Almost none of the x-2 series games endings are canon for anyone sadly. That's why I kinda generalize it a bit to the few fixed points that are known to have gone through.

If anyone's interest, there's a whole movie series based on the character of Tange Sazen, a nihilist samurai with one eye and one arm, in almost every movie chasing a treasure hidden in a jar or something like that. The first movie is from 1935, so he has an almost 100 years history. It's most probably Baiken was based on Tange Sazen, But if not - it's a big coincidence. More than that - there's a spin-off made in 1969, called "Lady Sazen" where Sazen is a badass woman, and of course she had a hard childhood. Probably the best movie from this series is the one from 1966, where Sazen has no family, lives alone and is treated by most of the people like a monster, i watched most of these movies so i can recommend them, even if the basic plot is almost every time the same.
Apparently baiken was based off of inuyasha. daisuke thought the main character was a woman and that’s how he got the inspiration for baiken
It's funny how voluptuous Baiken's appearance became since her first appearance in Guilty Gear as a secret character.
Until I saw her in Guilty Gear XX I thought she was male.
Makes more sense as a male, she was too similar to Shizumaru I guess.

ArcSys would print money if they partnered with someone like Platinum to make a spectacle fighter based around Baiken and her backstory.
They made a Contra game with Konami back on the PS3 and one of the DLC characters was a female samurai, that was interesting.
Definitely would love a Platinum take on her though!
A lot of characters in Guilty Gear would make for great protagonists in action games, I kinda hope we get more non fighting game Guilty Gear spin-offs in the future

baiken is so fucking cool. if slayer really is next i feel like Strive is finally getting characters that feel iconically Guilty Gear to me, and mechanically one of the greatest issues Strive has it how dominant big pressure "unga" characters are, imo due to the launch roster not including particularly diverse archetypes. So far season 1 has been a home run in alleviating this problem, but Baiken is a character who gives some of the top characters a tough matchup to worry about, and Pot and some others another favorable MU. No matter what Rev 2 Leo Mains say this is the start of what the Strive roster really needs, i think.
Some nomenclature that needs to be clarified. When you put up an attack before an opposing attack hits and your character intercepts the incoming attack, that's a "counter stance" move. When you do a move out of blockstun, that's a "guard reversal." I see people calling guard reversal moves "counters" or "alpha counters" a lot. "Alpha counter" is a guard reversal, so that works, but it's still weird to apply a SF Alpha term to other games, especially since the guard reversal concept existed before Alpha. Hell, other characters in GG could guard reversal, it's called "Dead Angle Attack," but what makes Baiken's special DAAs so powerful is that they don't cost half your Tension and have a multitude of effects. The difference between the two types of moves is important because one requires quick preemptive reactions or guessing that leaves you open if you're wrong, while the other is a reward for defending.
That's a problem with fighting games, some characters and arcs never develop and their conclusions are kind of rushed, others like KoF dismiss the previous fighters just because new, guilty tries to put them all but that leaves characters like Faust or Baiken feeling out of place.
Can you do one for Potemkin?! I just got into guilty gear strive and Potemkin is the funnest grappler I have ever played in a fighting game
Maybe one day. Sadly pot barely has any influence on the overall story of GG so it'd be more about his quirks

Baiken was inspired by Kenshin Himura, which really shows in her initial spritework. She used to be a cool female rônin with a hint of wild, careless sex appeal. That's before her Revelator redesign turned her into a booby lady, drawing all the milk deprived plebs to the yard. Don't get me wrong she's still cool as heck, but I wish ASW didn't go that hard, because her.. assets.. became the focal point of an otherwise much richer and nuanced character.
Her kimono is crisply open now like she woke up and did that to get the perfect breast window. It used to look like her kimono came loose from moving and fighting and she didnt care enough to fix it.

Isn't she underrated in terms of power though especially if you take into account alternate endings they may not be what she did but what she could do like killing Ino Fighting Justice fighting Kai and an alternative timeline Becoming this Notorious killer and fighting dizzy and testament. Also didn't it take 3 people originally just to seal Justice away and didn't sol also get blasted back by asuka in that same game Did that baiken and gets to him

Second, after watching the video I really appreciate how straightfoward Baiken's story is. A traumatized character who devoted herself to revenge, crippling injuries be damned. One of the reasons why I picked her up back in X and X2 is because of her relative simplicity compared to other characters.

It's become a trope to imply the reason people like Baken is b/c of her chest size, which is bullshit. People like her b/c the design is cool. One-armed samurai would work even in a B cup.
Its a trope because its true though. The Baiken army didn't exist until she got her redesign in xrd. Thats when she got the vast majority of her fans.
Her walking animations in Xrd are a lot of things, but 'cool' is the last word I would use.
@@rooflemonger Xrd was released in 2014, which was the height of the FGC popularity, so more people were exposed to Guilty Gear than ever before. So it is very possible that she got the vast majority of her fans when there was suddenly increased fandom of the FGC and Guilty Gear.

The big pair are definitely a plus for her but she already had a cool design without them and if I had gotten into the series earlier or if her redesign had more modest proportions I know I would've liked her anyway.
Badass grizzled beautiful amputee samurai woman is already one helluva character I'm super into, the Oppai aspect is simply the icing on the stacked up cake for me personally.
That's some deep copium you're having, Baiken was the forefront of Guilty Gear crossovers with gacha games. Why? Because she has become the no.1 waifu of GG after her redesign in Xrd and is used to market towards waifu collecting gacha players.
And why look down on her chest size? Imagine if someone wants to tone down Sol's shoulders or Potemkin's arms, why can men be extremely masculine but women can't be extremely feminine?

At first guilty gear game I'm so confused with Baiken moveset, as far as I see from majority of characters have kind of rush down type, like Sol, Chipp, and then all around type like Ky, charge type, and grapple type, but I think she can't be one of those type, after a lot of people said she's kinda defensive type now all of her movesets are more make sense 😁

Almost none of the x-2 series games endings are canon for anyone sadly. That's why I kinda generalize it a bit to the few fixed points that are known to have gone through.
