  • Carlos Vasquez is a competitive Mortal Kombat player. He's also completely blind.
    Audio description is available for this video. Go to Settings - Audio Track - English Descriptive.
    Carlos Vasquez, or @ObsKHRattlehead as he's known online, is a competitive Mortal Kombat player that's competed at EVO, one of the largest fighting game tournaments in the world. He's also completely blind. In this episode of Subcultured, host Josef Lorenzo explores the accessibility movement in gaming, learning how it has grown over the years, how players stay connected, and how folks are even consulting with developers (like those behind The Last of Us Part II).

    When I was in nursing school, during clinicals, I met a young man that was paralyzed from the neck down. He played video games. He had a specialized controller he used with his mouth and tongue. I watched him play call of duty and Madden. These gamers are amazing.

    That's great! I'm not blind but I rely on sound in my favorite game too! I'm easily overwhelmed by to much blinking and light and writing and stuff (I play world of Warcraft) so I need sounds to hint important things. Bosses say the same text when they do a specific ability I have to dodge or an addon that counts from 5 to remind me I have to move soon. Those things got better in the last years and I never thought about why. but now I think it's because of players like Carlos who helped to make them that way and I'm really thankful for that!

    • @konnorrose3652
      @konnorrose3652 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funny, you say that. I don’t know if you’ll read this, but they did make an accessibility add-on for World of Warcraft, where it reads out everything and where it is. Such as loading or picking up certain quest items. It tells you what’s in your inventory as well. And almost everything is mapped by directional audio beacons. That’s in classic at the moment though.

      I read a story about an all deaf WoW guild that raids. Instead of using voice comms, they have a very sophisticated text based macro system (bound to hotkeys for common phrases) to communicate. If you know anything about WoW raiding, that's absolutely insane. Sometimes there is so much information you have to convey in a very short time, couldn't imagine doing it without voice. Inspiring (and fascinating) stuff.

    This was a great video and I appreciate that it was both captioned and audio-descriptioned, but there was a glaring error in the captions...
    Right after the interviewer said, "My palms are sweaty," the blind gamer replied, "Mom's spaghetti" (a reference to the Eminem lyric), but the caption rendered this as "I'm all spaghetti."
    I use captions because I'm hard of hearing and miss a lot of words without captioning, but I heard that line quite clearly. Hopefully you guys can fix it for the benefit of those who can't hear the dialogue.

    HELL YEAH TLOU2 REPRESENT. I love how that game gets so much recognition for the absolute breadth of accessibility options that ND put into that game (among basically everything else that makes it amazing; yes even the story, haters can bite me). Hell, even my mostly able bodied ass used some of the features! Curb Cut Effect in action, y'all. :D

    I haven't been good at a game since Tetris so it boggles my mind that game designers are making things so accessible and successful! Game love to everyone!❤❤❤❤ and as far as accessible features being used by non-disabled people colon I always use talk to text because I have a hard time seeing up close and it's hard for me to type quickly. I can control my lights through a Google command with my voice and if I had that when I had a very young baby and didn't want to disturb them and get up while I was nursing but I wanted to turn down the brightness of the light it would have been a game-changer. Yay for accessibility!

    Little mistake at 10:52. The subtitles spelled Alexandria Neonakis's name incorrectly. It's Neonakis. Not "dionaki"

    I wonder if it's possible to use this technique to play a physical pinball machine? No headphones of course, but each sound would naturally be unique and emanate from the correct location.
