The Worst Disasters In History

- In this video, we’re going to examine three of the worst disasters in human history. Frustratingly, two of these seem to have been entirely preventable, if not for a series of mistakes made by the people involved. Then, in contrast, the third story required a once-in-a-lifetime natural event to occur for what eventually transpired. Either way, in each of them, the effects were beyond devastating.

Hey brother just wanted to let you know that there is a channel stealing your name and using trash AI to narrate. Its Scary Interesting 1. I reported it but i hope you can see this and have it taken care of.
Imagine being so talentless that you steal other people's really hard work... I'm reporting as well.
Respect to both of you what channel ID it I will also report
I reported it too! They got me until I heard the voice.
@Ohiseehowitis the name is "scary interesting1"
I think it was taken down, I can't find it to report it.
I lived in the next valley to Aberfan, and some of my neighbours were retired miners who had responded to the alarm. The initially thought that it was an accident at the pit, when they arrived, of course the true nature and horror of what had occurred was evident. One elderly man told me how they desperately tried to get the kids out. It was heartbreaking. He was in tears, and this was 25 plus years on. The mine operators were told the spoil was moving and they did nothing. They put profit over people. It's so sad when you go there, so many little lives cut short in a horrific way, and no one was held accountable. The Aberfan disaster is a scar that still hasn't healed.😢
Worked British mines until 2014,
We had an explosion and 3 deaths during my 10 years in that mine.
These disasters are horrendous, RIP to these brave people.
Swansea, I don't think the Welsh will ever forget those poor babies ❤
Especially when you realise how shoddily the NCB & government treated the families.
I know it's said that the aftermath and fights over the compensation tore the community apart in the aftermath.
A documentary on the disaster said that the National Coal Board took money from the public donations for the victims families to clear the other spoil heaps looming over the town.
@@julierobinson3633 yep, and Margret Thatcher refused to reimburse the families for the money taken.
I haven't worked in a mine a day of my life but even I can work out that if someone said, "Hey, how about we store millions of tons of loose earth on a hillside?", the only sensible answer is, "Absolutely not!"
Yea, but think of the savings!
It's bad when even the most inexperienced can confidently say "who the fuck gave you that idea?" 🤣
@youstayclassysd10 Yep that’s the REAL problem, right there. It’s got nothing to do with common sense. It’s got to do with dollars and cents.
with 2k money or store it on a safer place but with 10k money? Well "Absolutely on a hillside"
Above a primary school, (5-11 year olds), perfect. Especially in a country (Wales) where it constantly rains. Well the mines shut, and it’s now poorer. But they’re alive…
Imagine being a father who worked at the mine, knowing that the spoil that you created, or maybe even personally deposited on tip 7, was the same thing that caused the death of your child at school. So sad
One of the famous stories from Aberfan is of a little girl who had a nightmare that a 'monster ate her school'. She was killed in the disaster.
Check out the premonitions bureau by Sam knight if you are interested in this storyline! Very interesting!
Honestly you could do a series on the Welsh mining disasters, especially when you consider how negligent the mining companies were. Sengenydd is another one that springs to mind. The most fatal mining disaster in UK history. I'm sure the north of England has their fair share of stories as well. Even down to the manipulation of the miners. Paying in "tokens" that could only be cashed in at stores and small companies owned by the mine effectively creating a slave force as the mine company never had to hand over a penny to its workers. They became so greedy and made up pretty much all the non-regal wealth across the country. I can't speak for the rest of the country but certainly Wales, any grand building was pretty much a product of a rich mine owner.
and they got away with it
They certainly weren't slaves, and were paid wages although it was a tough life I'll grant you.
@@chendaforestI've not claimed the whole industry here. We're talking about specific mining villages. To not pay someone a monetary wage may as well be slavery. They had housing and shops provided by the mine with their own faux currency system. So any amenities were provided at the discretion of the mine. This meaning if the workers kicked up a fuss, the mine could take away literally everything from them, leaving them little to no rights they just had to be thankful for a roof and food and they couldn't leave because they had no money backing them. I'm sorry but that is effectively just a convoluted form of slavery. Some towns were better off than others where money could still be sent but not all.
@@fractiousfauxpas1368 Whilst the miners were often treated badly we should be very cautious about making such claims of slavery. They could not be bought or sold and had rights as citizens. Life on say a slave on a plantation in the American south was the real slavery (some slave owners argued they treated their slaves better than factory owners treated their workers and at a peverse level they may have had a point)
@@fractiousfauxpas1368 This describes our modern society in general, does it not? So many of us have jobs that slowly kill us, but we have no option but to keep on working. Else we won't have a roof over our heads or food to eat, as there is no alternative. When the going gets tough for our governments they freeze our bank accounts, lock us out of grocery stores, airports, train stations, take away our firearms rights, penalize us for commuting and heating our homes by increasing carbon taxes, and on and on. They distract us with mind numbing social media, television, bad news, fear, youtube, and netflix. They coerce our weakened minds into spending every cent of disposable income on dumb things to make us feel like life is good. We are all slaves living under a government issued fallacy that we call freedom...
Scary Interesting is quickly becoming a top 3 favorite channel of mine. I am not so much into creepy/horror stories but I have to say the presentation, music and a great narrator who is not too descriptive when it comes to the gory stuff makes the content unnerving but still easy to digest. Thank you so much!
IKR!? My dudes unique illustrations are absolutely brilliant and just the overall presentation is always top notch!😉👍
I like Fascinating Horror's channel for the same reasons
FascinatingHorror is the best
@@SugarandSarcasmsame!
Try KyotoRobato. Not as frequent uploads, but great quality and a bit of back log to last you a little. Mostly Japanese missing person and murder mysteries with some other stuff mixed in, all Japan.
The last one is the most maddening. Greed without common sense, and why couldn't it have given way at any other time of day? Absolutely devastating. They all are, but the fact it hit a school is just awful.
The story only gets worse in the aftermath too. The stole from the relief fund to move the other dangerous tip. They had to prove that the father was close with their child to receive compensation. Then, after all was said and done, the government still refused to provide the relief they had promised. The entire ordeal was an exercise in evil.
@@abebuckingham8198 Ya. I don't know why abject cruelty sets in amongst the people who can instead make an extremely positive change to avoid such future tragedies. But, my guess is that callousness extends from the blatant disregard that setting up the tragedy scenario requires, and the responsible party paying off the right people. Ya know what they say about connections and networking...
I'd love to hear you go over the sampoong mall disaster. I've heard people go over it before, but there were always some confusion with the details. I respect the amount of research you go through in order to bring these videos to life.
Fascinating Horror did a good video on the disaster. The style is similar to this channel
@@averycheesypotatoI love him! Between Fascinating Horror, Scary Interesting, and Mr. Ballen I am set. Mostly.
I was 8 and living in Brighton at the time. When the news of the Abervan disaster hit the news my dad went into the shed, grabbed a spade and headed to South Wales. Obviously couldn't help but I shall never forget his brave intentions. Quite a few years later I visited the village and the cemetery.....the saddest place in the world. RIP
This is the first place I have ever seen anyone talk about the Wellington disaster. I've visited the area for day hikes, and seeing the old foundations of the town, and the slowly decaying snow shed there is eerie. And midway along the snow shed, there is a memorial to those who perished, listing their names. Staring at that memorial while standing in the gloomy light of the snow shed is an almost otherworldly experience.
Once I saw you were covering the Wrexham disaster I wondered if you would ever cover Aberfan. Every Welsh child learns of this disaster, and I can’t listen to these stories without crying my eyes out. A huge tragedy. Thank you for covering this and making these disasters known to more people 🏴
I think it is taught all around the Uk, I’m from SW Scotland and we learned about it in school. It upset me so much as a child I had to visit the place to pay my respects.
You mean the Aberfan that IS covered in the video? Helps to watch the video before commenting.
I believe it's taught in most British schools. I grew up in Somerset and learnt about it in Junior school.
@@tmilesffl yes, that’s why i mentioned it and said thank you for covering it. The Wrexham disaster was covered first, then I was pleased to see Aberfan was covered.
@@speleokeir I’m glad it’s taught in English (and Scottish, as per @TimRobson30) schools too. My London friends had not heard of it, so I’d assumed it wasn’t. It’s an important event in Welsh (and British) history.
Please continue the disaster videos! The Joplin, MO tornado would be a good one. Absolutely devastating disaster and an interesting story. I was there in the days afterward. Looked like a nuclear bomb went off.
Lived in Springfield mo in 2011 and watching footage unfold was horrific Joplin 🌪
I remember that well. I am from fayetteville. Totally horrific.
The 1997 Jarrell, TX F5 Deadman Walking was just as bad if not worse. Those people were told to go home and shelter from the tornado. And that was their death sentence. The tornado was not survivable, with a 100% above ground mortality rate. Not even Joplin was guaranteed death if caught in it's path. Yes, Joplin was larger, and killed more people. But it didn't dismember the people trying to shelter in their homes.
Ayyy I'm from there :)
I was about seven or eight when it happened, luckily my home wasn't hit or anything.. just neat (maybe not neat but interesting) to have something so monumental happen in your town to put it on the map.
There's many memorials here for it, if you drive through the hit areas it's recovered really well but you can still tell because of the lack of trees.
I'm not from Joplin, but I do live in MO, and that was a living nightmare disaster. I remember barely being able to wrap my head around the devastation. Like you said, it looked like someone dropped a nuke on the city. Family friends lived there, luckily they survived but if I remember right their house was completely destroyed. It was truly horrific.
I know it's the least important part of the story but I want to know who named the mine shafts Dennis and Martin and why.
I have adored seeing your production quality constantly rise whilst keeping the same amazing writing and format
while the rest of YT all rush to do the same content as everyone else, this channel certainly stand out. Every video here is a must-see!
Your timing of the cascade disaster is actually perfectly timed. In March here in 2024, similar conditions exist as were present back then. All winter, we had only had 1/2 of our average total snowfall in the Washington Cascades. However, by the end of this first weekend in March and in only the past two weeks, we will be back to our average snowfall total for the season with an unusually cold end of February. During this time, we had a day or two where, for a half a day, temperatures suddenly increased significantly, causing rain in the mountains before just as quickly dropping again and snow to returning.
Having lived in the northwest my whole life, this is normal. Each winter, warm, wet air from California and the Pineapple Express plays a 24/7 chess game with Arctic air making its way down from Alaska and moisture just off the coast of the Pacific. This dance between rain and snow makes avalanches normal and something governments watch around the clock, closing highways triggering avalanches, clearing them and reopening the highway all while each year more of the highway is covered by tunnels and changed to decrease further disruptions.
In case anyone is wondering, Artillery shells fired from canons or dropped by helicopter are used to cause the controlled avalanches.
Same here in austria. Controlled explosions. Spring is the worst time for avalanches here, snow melts, freezes, new snow comes , creating different layers. Sun comes out, making snow "soft" and here we go.
Your message makes no sense. You posted this on March 2, which was a Saturday, the first weekend of March 2024, so how could you be posting information about the end of the first weekend in March 2024 when it had not happened yet?
So there
The Welsh tip disaster makes me cry whenever I hear this story. It's just so incredibly sad.
"Worst Disasters In History" you should cover my first marriage.

Interestingly Scary?
it would surely have been scary to have been involved in any of the events of the video, and if you survived, you'd have an interesting story for the rest of your life.
This is one of my top three favorite story telling channels. That is because the stories on this channel are not the typical story genres: crime, aliens, etc. It seems this story teller spends a lot of time searching for stories that are not primarily in the USA and stories that are related to disappearances, natural disasters, etc.
MrBallen should totally be apart of your list too then❤
@@jackieschulze4 he is and so is The Why Files. :)
Coal was a blessing and a curse in so many ways, I remember that disaster and my dad's horrified expression for days after and we live in the US. The buried alive thing is a fear that most people feel terrified by.
Would have been great to have the internet back then to build community relations
The reason people started using coal is because the forest was the King's forest and commoners weren't allowed to cut down trees. So the poor resulted to mining coal to heat their homes.
@@paulboccuti1141 Never heard such nonsense.

Great addition! I've heard the story dozens of times, but i'd like to hear your re-telling of the Molasses Flood in Boston of 1919.
That was a great summary of the Wellington story, I've been hoping one of the disaster channels I watch would cover it for a long time now. Subscribed for that!
I love your videos, and I love how you've not picked some of the most well-known accidents (those that have often already been covered by others on TH-cam or by documentaries on TV). I hope you'll continue a 'worst disasters'-series, I'm looking forward to learning more
Your video production skills are top tier! The intro, visuals, maps, narration, script, and outro are superb.

Sad fate.
Loved the editing in the beginning. Great video as usual, the writing is always good and u narrate really well.
As someone who's lived in Wales their whole life, the Aberfan mining disaster is something we have learnt about many times. The first time we were taught about it was in primary school, and I remember we were told about a teacher who used her body to shield multiple children from the incoming debris. We were also taught about it again in secondary, even going on school trips and listening to the story of some of the miners.
The coal mining industry in Wales was brutal. My great grandfather was a coal miner, there's a photo of him on a sign near the Mynydd Mawr Woodland park in Tumble. Thank you for sharing Welsh history with the world ❤
I live in Aberfan.there is now a memorial garden where the school was.
No shit he literally said that in the documentary
It's a shame you weren't there to witness it firsthand.... It would have saved the modern world from your lack of intelligence.
Please don't ever have children.
@@vinnyharlem2159He said it during the video while watching. This was said right at the end, he just hadn’t known that it was said yet.
Definitely please do more of these, very interesting. There is a plethora of huge disasters of all kinds from all over the world. Would make for a great series.
Thank you.
I enjoyed your presentation of these disasters. I knew of the first, yet I was still captivated. Thanks
Crazy to see something so close to home with the Aberfan disaster! Love your content.

So glad to hear you covering aberfan! Such a tragic part of welsh history that nobody putside of wales seems to know about
Minning is a hell of a business, huh? The last case reminded me of a similar case that happened in Brazil, 2015, in a town called Mariana. I don't know if it was the exact same type of disaster, but there was a river of slurry that run over several cities, a real horror show and a complete ambiental disaster.
Another terrific video, as they all are. Just a minor point in passing though. Tranmere Rovers FC play their home games at Prenton Park on Merseyside across the border in England, while still close to Wrexham.
These are very interesting. Please do more! A recent disaster you could look into is the Oso mudslide in Washington state. I live 20 miles away and it was a very eerie and devastating site.
This video is awesome. the visuals and editing are amazing! thanks for this video
Love love love your content thank you so much
Ayyy Wellington is a cool site to visit, still have the tunnel and snow sheds to hike. You can also stand on the edge of the grade and look down where the trains were thrown, and it’s not uncommon to find railroad junk strewn around from the ages
Iron Goat trail, the cascade tunnel, the snow shed, all of it. Very cool place!
Definitely interested in this series. Thank you! The Belmont Mine Disaster (Tonopah NV) would also be a good topic.
Man, your videos are getting better and better. This one is especially well made. Great work.
3:10 As a born and bred Spokanite, it is my unfortunate duty to inform you the 'e' is a trap. Spokane is pronounced 'can,' like, "Spo-can we drop the 'e' already?" Not like 'cane.'
Also, Wenatchee rhymes with "patchy."
@@onewayturtles You know, I almost edited my comment to include Wenatchee, but I figured one nitpick was enough and left it up to the Central Washingtonians to chime in on. Good on ya for picking up the slack. ;)
I do sort of feel bad for folks outside the Evergreen State. We have some weird names for most people. Washougal. Asotin. Pend Oreille. Issaquah. Chelan. Puyallup. Snoqualmie. Tukwila. Enumclaw. Wastucna. Hoquiam. Okanagan. Pe Ell. Cle Elum. Toppenish. ...And by 'weird,' I mean cool as heck. Spokane has gotten really onboard with work with the Spokane Tribe to rename landmarks with Salish names. The event hall at the remodeled library, for example, is nxʷyxʷyetkʷ Hall. I love it, I hope we continue naming things people outside the region will have no hope of getting right. We're a modest state-we have to keep ourselves entertained somehow. And what better way to foster unity amidst our oft divided politics than to come together and bitch about how no one says the names right? (◡‿◡✿)

I was 8 when this disaster occurred and I remember clearly my mother crying at the news. I also remember that two young girls were recovered still holding hands together and dying like that....
I remember the Abervan tragedy and i think that it's absolutely atrocious that those responsible weren't imprisoned. Was compensation paid to the families? No amount of money can replace a childs life of course ,but compensation is the least they could do.

I lived in the NW for almost 10 years and never heard of the Tye Avalanche, though I've been through the area many times. I do remember the nearby landslide that buried the town of Oso not far away, ten years ago this month. That was also cause by unusually heavy late winter weather and worsened by logging on the slopes above the town.
