How To make Premium Weed Guards for Crappie Jigs

  • In this video I share how we make weed guards for the Crappie jigs I use specifically for vertical jigging in deep heavy cover. I've caught over 40 Crappie, all on the same jig, in one day, and went home with that same jig still tied to my pole. Definately worth the time to make a few quality jigs. The extra effort pays for itself.
    Thanks for watching

    THANKS!! Grandpa told me if I would listen to people, I would learn something new every day. You just once more proved what he began telling me over seventy years ago. I definitely feel your way is an improvement over all other ways I have seen and used. Ordering the Solarez Epoxy & A Black Light today and will try it your way as soon as they arrive, followed by putting the jigs to the test over the following days.

    Thank you Sir for sharing. I was looking for a way to bend myself a bait keeper and add to my jigs that I tie a weed guard onto just as you. I had not thought about using the same 30 lb test mono for the the bait keeper as well. I will try this. I have found that 30 lb works good for me, especially for my 1/16 oz jigs. Thank you again fir the great idea.

    Now that is the DEAL ! I like that... Solarez is my next purchase and I was thinking 50# until I saw your demonstration. So it's 60# I want ! I'm trying this on a 1/2 oz flipping jig that I put buck tail on the collar of a bullet head jig that has a ring groove for rubber skirt. I needed a way to make it weedless and the rubber skirt might have been a prblem, but with the 60# guard or even if I doubled it using the Solarez UV glue, it should solve my dilemma.

    • @FlintKnapper007
      @FlintKnapper007  ปีที่แล้ว

      if doin this on a 1/2 oz jig.... id consider using 100# clear or heavier.

    Cool video.
    In the past, I've made videos on another channel using a cheap tripod, a smartphone mount for a tripod and a smartphone. This might be helpful for you in the future.
    Also, I was going to say that baking soda sprinkled on super glue causes it to cure almost instantly. It might cost less than UV glue. However, it's just a thought.
    Also, I've seen bait holders on hooks made using a bent piece of a paper clip and heat shrink tubing. This might also be useful for you as well.
    Sincerely,
    Jacob

    It is always handy to be able to Yankee engineer the solution to a problem in a situation with no other options
    But realistically, when you add up all of the time invested in doing this and the cost of materials, you would be way better off to just purchase weedless jigs to start with???

    Excellent, extremely helpful video. Thank you for sharing your Technique. 2 questions, first I notice your weed guard is sticking way out from the hook, do you ever bend it back closer to the hook point? With the guard sticking perpendicular to the hook is it not an obstruction to the hook getting clear into the fish's mouth? Second question, most of the crappie in my Lake are in the 10 to 13 inch range. Should I use a lesser pound line then the 60 lb you recommend for the weed guard to allow it to flex easier with these smaller size fish? Forgive my ignorance. I'm new to all of this. Thank you again for your excellent video.

    • @FlintKnapper007
      @FlintKnapper007  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      no..... i found that closer to the hook causes hangups.... almost verticle.... makes for a stiffer weedguard

    • @FlintKnapper007
      @FlintKnapper007  ปีที่แล้ว

      sorry it took me so long to reply. You will have no issues hooking the fish. this allows you to put your jig where u normally wouldnt.... yes, i bend my weedguards a little to hover just over the hook tip
