UPDATE: I've have cut a new stem for this watch. And now the watch operates and winds perfectly without problems. The S also aligns nicely. The final stem length after filing and cleaning any burrs was 14.52mm. I even used Loctite to secure it this time.
I definitely appreciate these long form videos. They say a fool learns from his own mistakes; the wise learn from the mistakes of others. You are making us wise, and for that i am grateful. Will be starting my first build soon (still selecting and ordering parts), so I'm learning as much as possible before i start.
I love how you, unlike most people who make videos about watch mods/restoration/builds, leave in all the mistakes and the swearing and the frustrations that you encounter. You're not trying to sugarcoat anything. I'm waiting on the parts to do my very first watch repair (swapping out the broken movement) and I KNOW that it's going to a b*tch, especially since I have two left hands.
A great video, well filmed and some good techniques discussed. On the crown and stem I always use Loctite and do fit the stem into the crown as far as it will go. Holding the stem with some pliers and then test fitting the crown before measuring the amount to cut is helpful. I found this out when making the mistake of holding the stem and crown in my fingers and then not screwing the crown as far as it can go. It is difficult to tell if the crown is fully in when holding it with your fingers. The rest of the measuring and filling is much easier if the potential for this mistake is taken out of the equation.
I know it's a small thing, but I love how just that touch of paint on the second hand brought the build together. I think I might have chosen an enamel paint over acrylic (just less possibility of it flaking) but it's crazy how that small detail changed the look.
I'm glad you think so! I would have opted for enamel paint too, but I just used what I had on hand. If necessary, I can always dip it in acetone to remove the acrylic and then re-dip it in some enamel paint in the future.
Use the waste middle section of the 3M dial adhesive ring as opposed to sacrificing the actual dial adhesive. Awesome videos Thanks for taking the time to make them. Well done Sir 👍
I’m currently planning a Samurai dial to SKX case mod myself and this video saved me a big headache! I got an education on chapter ring compatibility and the finished piece looks fantastic.
Wandering around the You Tubes about watches I stumbled upon your channel, so you can be sure that the algorithm is doing its job. I’ve just watched a couple of your videos and I can say that I really enjoy the format and the whole process you put into the builds (caveats included), I find it kind of therapeutic, laidback and fun. I’ll keep digging your channel for more modding goodness (I’m new to this collecting and modding watches so I guess this place is a good starting point). Liked and subbed, keep them coming!
I did this exact mod this morning, except I put on a black date wheel into a titanium skx case. I should not have had coffee before starting, but I finally got it. I absolutely love it. I like that you're not an expert, as I'm far from expert, but still get it done.
Mate that is a real gorgie that mod. I would wear that all day everyday for sure. Looks so awesome I really love the chapter ring and matching seconds hand tip. We'll done mate. And as usual lots of laughs because you make it so funny and entertaining. Just the way you deal with the frustrations of modding is so positive it really is an inspiration. I don't do mods myself but I'm so grateful for you.
Absolutely love the videos- thank you very much. And I’m glad to see where you use alternative materials to keep the cost down. I’d love to make a watch, but dropping $350 or so for a watch is too much for multiple projects. I’d also love to see a video of you gathering parts from EBay and putting together various watches, including Pilot & Flieger watches for variety. Thanks again!
Beautiful mod! I hope my first mod turns out as well! All we really need now is a fully lumed ceramic mm300 style insert! I'm with you on the difference the font makes!
Oh man I thought you quit youtube, thank god you didn't!! Amazing, very detailed and quality video again! Keep up the good work, your channel is gonna blow up.
I watched this video so many times...it is the most beautifull mod ever! Period! it inspired me to do someting simular but with a custom dial....Thnx for inspiring me!
Nice vid Dan and great build too. Keep it all in content wise, it's nice to see everything including the 'oops' moments and how to fix them. Keep it going my friend. :)
Your better than alot of the watch channels out there. Enjoy your content very much and you explain things well. I am sure your subscribers will grow quickly. Keep at it, You have a gift!
Well done👏👏. Personally, I really enjoy the long format style, that you've utilized, in this particular build. I would imagine, that by grinding down and reducing the thickness of the chapter ring, you'd also be reducing the distance between the dial, and the underside of the crystal. As well as, increasing the distance between the top of the rotor, on the back of the movement, and the underside of the crystal, of the exhibition caseback. I'm guessing that you realized this though, hence why you wound up, eventually purchasing and installing, the "SKX designed" chapter ring. I find false advertising, to be thoroughly annoying. I really like the addition, of the knurled crown and bezel, to the build. The application, of the red paint coating, to the tip of the second hand, was sheer genius. Continuity of design, tying the dial, and chapter ring together. The same applies to the dial choice. The texture of the dial pairs nicely, w/ the knurled texture of the bezel and crown. Just a very "smart" looking design aesthetic, I feel. Really looking forward to the next one. Here's wishing you all the best, Steve. Cheers....
I like 👍 this watch ⌚️ better with the black calendar 📅 disc. Most of these higher end Seiko's look great with them. I understand that this watch is a mod, or a build, but its still a real Seiko. Just subbed!! Your friend, Jeff!!
My friend, I suggest you give-up on the dial-dots (adds height to dial, a prob with any hour or GMT hand) and use very small dabs/smears of E6000 or G-S Hypo! Love your builds.
An absolutely great video. Everything very well explained. Just wondering if after doing the mod if the watch will be tested for its water proof/resistance ability. Also I own an SKX-007 myself and would like to have a see through back to replace the original one. Any suggestions how I could get one installed? Thanx and have a great day.
Thanks! I don't have the appropriate tools to test the water resistance unfortunately. As for getting a display case back for your SKX007, you can get one here: www.namokimods.com/en-gb/collections/casebacks/products/skx-sapphire-display-caseback-polished-finish?ref=itsanotherwatchYT&variant=31887590916130 . Its rated for 200M water resistance and has options for either use with an NH36 or 7S26 (since they have different size spacers). If you're SKX007 is stock, make sure you go for the 7S26 (Black Spacer) option. To change your case back, you can get something like this: www.amazon.co.uk/Zacro-Adjustable-Opener-Remover-Watchmaker/dp/B01N4BNKXA/ . There's a tool for holding the case (for better grip) and a tool that will unscrew the case back. Its as simple as unscrewing the old one, keeping the gasket (from the old one) in place and then screwing the display case back down onto it. Naturally you can see me do it in this video, placing the gasket and screwing on the case back, so its fairly simple.
I have the king samurai black waffle dial which looks identical with this. The only way I can use it is using a rubber band. With metal bracelet, hand fatigue is weaving.
My S is perfectly upside down. I am just going to live with it. Did not consider that when installing. Apparently Seiko didn’t either as my case back is also 180 degrees off.
Surely the alignment of the S on the crown, is determined by the wind down thread on the case tube? The length of the winding stem length wouldn't be a factor. Or am I missing something?
Video idea: build a half decent "SKX" using the cheapest parts you can find on Aliexpress. I have seen some cases with crystal and dial for like 60 dollars and have always wondered if they are okay.

The best watch channel on TH-cam. Makes me smarter instead of stupider.

That second hand looks fantastic! Loving the knurled finishes.
Looks absolutely gorgeous, brilliant job on it! And yes, that red second hand tip is exactly the right change.

Gorgeous
Have you considered trying the slim case backs from Namoki Mods? They are awesome and give the watch a nice lower profile on the wrist.
I have! I've got one coming up in the next video. Its gonna be a really good one, so stay tune for that!

Ha ha you people amaze me. Half way through and I already would've thrown it against the wall
