As a contractor myself, I always get asked to do things for people and other contractors. A guy with a skidloader on a jobsite is always in demand, and when possible I try and help out, usually it just pays in reputation, occasionally a few bucks or beer. But that's how u build your company amongst the trades and homeowners. It puts u in front of their eyes in a positive way. Which is the best advertisement there is

always nice when the contracted crew is cooperative and willing to take responsibility for their own decisions... want to get it done fast and easy there is always risk of damage... glad you guys covered your asses and the other crew stepped up and took responsibility

Had one similar where the contractor wanted me to do a favor with my hydro crane and set a steel atv bridge across a fast running dirt walled irrigation canal. I realized when I set up, my outriggers could cause the canal side to collapse. They would have to shut the canal and I would have been liable for all the crops down stream! They offered to pay and sign a waiver I still said No Way. Sometimes you just walk away.

I showed my brother, a sitting Federal Judge in Texas, this, and he said THIS video, if allowed into court, would be more of a problem than a solution. This is what leads to negative adjudications when uneducated people make assumptions and listen to others without the education and knowledge required to make professional opinions without basis.
But, he also said, the school of hard knocks usually teaches a lesson that reminds the learner for a lifetime.
Good luck on your endeavors. good 👍

I'm not a construction lawyer, but I do occasionally represent small contractors when they've been stiffed on payment. it would their lives so much easier if they did a better job communicating clear expectations and limitations with their customers. video is a great way to do that.

I'm sure you already know this, but the term you're looking for is,..."At YOUR direction." You can suggest different ways of doing it, but then have THEM tell you how to do it, and follow their directions as long as it doesn't endanger you or your equipment.

Well, I should clarify. Asking someone else to do a job for you because you re unprepared is my signal to move on. It's not a weight thing, even though I came across like that. The guys weren't prepared, and there's nothing wrong with asking for help, but a good contractor shouldn't have to ask for help, They should be prepared.

If it was me. I would have used a couple chains or straps and lifted it up and then away from the structures.
But being a chimney it might have crumbled.
Although it looked like it stayed together in one piece even after hitting the ground.
Not advice, it's just that the way it was done looked to risky. Even though it worked out.
That looked like pure luck that it didn't hit that sunroom.

Its not a hard job but why in the world would you want to get involved anyway.. BTW just because they are saying they will take the blame does not absolve you from your actions of pulling it down

Why? I was trying to help out another contractor who was less experienced and undermanned to handle it. Favors aren't bad to do-just try to protect yourself..
