I would change from my V8 to the new 2.8 auto, but only because I have a shoulder issue that is making gear changing difficult. I haven’t done so yet because I watched a heap of “V8 killer” reviews when the new 70 series was released then went for a test drive and realised that factory it’s quicker on road and that’s it! That 2.8 is reving its ring out in comparison to the V8 so longevity and reliability is yet to be seen and I’m sitting on the fence hoping my shoulder gets better!
The open gap inside the guards is the same in 200, 300 and prados, they just have a plastic cover hiding it ! I've done 16,000 kms in a 78 2.8, last 8000 constantly towing hybrid van on a trip around Oz. Been off road, low range, dirt, rock, sand tracks, sand dunes, beach hasn't missed a beat. Still stock except for bullbar. Love it
I consider myself lucky owning a 2022 v8 and I bought it to last me and my fam for a long time. When you said it shifts around 4K, I actually had to listen again… I cannot remember that I pushed my v8 ever to 4K rpm’s…how on earth is this new engine going to last??

In 2022 i was talking to a major mining client who was telling me the industry get better results from the hilux/prado motor and box than the v8. They tried the 300 and wont have them (i had one and hated it) The operational costs are way cheaper. So hey presto here we are. The bonnet and guards are designed to be “softer” on pedestrians hence the tinny look. So, i sold my v8 (had 5 of them), and bought…… a hilux to see if incan live with the 2.8/auto and guess what? I can. Buuuuuut Will i ever buy another 70? probably not. You nailed it re under the bonnet- my hilux is tidier. The track issue- ffs a 4 cyl is narrower so return the front to the same. There has been a lot of stories of piston failures in the Hilux & Prado engines over the years. It remains to be seen if Toyota has changed the piston design & whether the 2.8 engine will be able to handle the performance expectations in the long run. Personally, I would stick with the V8 if I had a 70 series. I'm happy with my 200 series.
I read somewhere that was due to the piston design on the underside and was remedied long ago. A lot of those issues could also be traced to either heavy towing and/or tuning, neither of which the old engine excelled at. General advice was not to tune the 3.0.
The piston issues are only present in the 1kd 3.0L hilux motor. They are far too thin along the top of the gudeon pin and crown. The 2.8L doesn't have this issue at all, as it's a completely different design. One thing to note is thee 2.8l has a connecting rod HALF the thickness of the 3.0l motor. Despite this, there hasn't been any notable issues with this either. Just my findings
Dont do that. The extra 40kg over the front is a bad idea and is unnecessary. Stick a LFP in the back, eg a 120AH LFP weighs only 15kg + a couple of kgs for the charge controller and wiring.
Check out one of our other vids on this. The V8 has now been discontinued, only the 2.8L now. At least for a new vehicle. The next year's worth of V8's being delivered have been orders from 2 years ago.
Someone once said that the automatic gearbox was created so everyone could drive a car, unlike the manual gearbox, which was only for those who truly knew how to drive. I have an engineering degree in (ICE), and I’d like to share my opinion. Both engines are marvels of the ICE world, representing the pinnacle of performance. Yes, we can debate minor details, but overall, they are on a similar level in terms of performance. However, my conclusion is that larger engines, such as the V8 in the 70 Series, come from the factory in what could be called an "underperformed" state, while the 2.8-liter engine is already pushed close to its limits. With that in mind, there’s no doubt about which engine will last longer-it’s the V8, 101%. Moreover, if you make slight modifications to the V8, it will outperform the 4-cylinder engine in every aspect. Need some evidence? Just check the RPMs for torque and power measurements between the V8 4.5L and the 4-cylinder 2.8L. If that doesn’t tell you everything you need to know, then I have no further comments. As for those who claim the "almighty 4-cylinder" is superior, I see two possibilities: they are either influenced by suppliers or lack sufficient engineering knowledge. Apologies if this sounds blunt-it’s just my honest opinion. Okay, okay, guys, I’ll reserve a third option: it could just be for those who can’t afford the V8. 😉
Thanks for the video. From Finland where we have salted roads at winter I just cant imagine how bad that bull bar would look, if its rusting all ready at your climate.

Everyone has been deceived by the automatic transmission and different diff ratios - all of the electronic and ergonomic features literally are simple to install into the mighty V8.. But yeah they are not the future one bit whatsoever, they won't be around for long, Toyota has to put a larger more powerful and reliable engine arrangement in these vehicles, the novelty has already worn off for those wanting to buy them and then mine site application will really be the main demand, apart from that its the beginning of the end and can't be argued, doing the exact same stupidity decision that Nissan done releasing the ZD30 into the patrol.

[6:55] Good to know to change every 10,000 KM (I thought every 5000 K) and no Ad Blue, I think it is a good car.
You're welcome! We think it's a good car too. Certainly has a more "car"-like feel
No I definitely wouldn't down grade from my V8!
Any car that alerts me to my speed is a non-starter.
So pretty much majority of any modern new vehicles? haha
Before im slayed by comments i love the 70 series 92 troopie for 8 years loved it but the fact toyota still getting away with that rear wheel track is dog shit and your taking the piss out of your self buying them
This is why this car is 30% cheaper in china
Agreed on the rear wheel track comment especially!! No reason for it NOT to be changed at this point.
Zd30. 2.0
I would never get one. I would rather save my money and by a hilux and I still won’t do that
Small engines with a turbo to give it useable power don't last.
Time will tell. The Hilux and Prado have been decent over the last 9 years. Biggest difference is the number of people that tow with a 70 compared to the Hilux/Prado is significant. So there is that for debate!
expert mechanic 🤣
That's what actually working on these Landcruiser's for over a decade, creating solutions and fixing problems these vehicles have, in addition to getting more power out of them. - PDP Media Team
Yuck. Nearly worse than the 4 cilender in a mustang Just buy a hilux and save some money
Who cares how this rides do a mechanical side by side comparison
Noted!
it's just under powered period.
Technically compared to the V8 from factory, it isn't.
Those kits are soo dauchy 🤦🏻
Which kits?
Looks like Ryan’s car, is it?
Are you referring to the media guy here? - PDP Media Guy haha
I'm getting a 2.8, I want the auto. I do get that the v8 sounds cool but that's all it does, they are
Actually slow af and a bit embarrassing, insofar as they make so much noise and fuss to do a simple thing like go up a step which a hilux does in silence
Plus I'v got a chev 3500 3 times the power of the lc v8, so I don't view it as impressive or tough like most people
Over priced shit box no track correction 2many$$
How is 85K expensive? Its low to mid range mate
@@espkh1549 There is a point there. It is more expensive than when the V8's first rolled out. And it's a smaller engine, besides that, a lot of the vehicle remains the same. We wouldn't consider it low range at this price point, especially in comparison with other 4WDs on the market.
Just a years wage, all good cars have cost this since the 70’s
