I love sparring! One of my favorites things to do in the gym. I like to spar people that are better than me, then I can learn a lot of good tricks and things.
I got my ass kicked today in a sparring match and I’m not going to lie it hurt my pride and or ego. I expected so much more from myself. The guy I went against gave me a nose bleed and said that it’s because if I throw a hook he will throw a hard hit. How should I even feel?

All the tips given in this video are time tested and true. Each and every tip is an echo of what I have heard from my coach and my mentors over the years. Hearing it all in one video is a real treat. Tony Jeffries is articulate and crystal clear in his presentation. If you know what I mean, this could very well be a testament to what he said, "Hit and not be hit". After all, Tony has been there and done it all in boxing.
Thank you for your time this important info 1 practice the basics 2 keeping your eye on your opponent 3 pace yourself hit and not be hit gotcha think about you're defense
I remember visualizing the sparring session for the next day while on bed to sleep. Thinking about that headmovement and counter. Sometimes, while falling sleep, my left arm jerked while in my mind I was throwing a counter jab. I use to do it 3 times a week and miss it a lot. Love this sport.
Phenomenal video as always. I remember my first sparing session I didn't wanna hurt anybody but I really wanted to box so I got very good and defense but had very very poor offense and I jabbed like 99% of the time and landed no power punches in sparing or in a once in a blue moon heavy side spar. Now I feel I have good control my how much power input I have. With tons of light sparing never went home with a headache and learned a lot
Ha! Same here. Only once i sent a sparring partner to the canvas, but it had more to do with technique than power (upper to lower part of solar plexus, almost a mistake) and felt very bad. Fortunately, a close friend of his wanted revenge, so he tried to decapitate me in the next round... but my defense was good. We ended (three of us) as good friends.
Love your videos, Tony. I've been doing Muay Thai for a years, but these videos have helped improved my sparring and my training. Muay Thai in the states incorporates a lot of Western Boxing and your videos are invaluable teaching tools.
I just sparred for the first time , yesterday , all your points are so true , My first opponent was roughly my skill level With my second opponent , I was partnered for fighting a tough experienced opponent , I focused only on attacking , I’m good with a punching bag and speed bag and jab really good , I might have hit him hard because the next hook he hit me on my head I got a nosebleed Been scrolling sparring videos , can’t sleep , sparring and getting hit made me feel so alive
I really wanna thank you from the bottom of my heart Tony ❤ bcs of your videos I'm so much better at boxing right now and also my couch starts to be jealous of you 😄😄 you are a legend Tony 💪💪
All great tips! To me, #3 (sparring partner) is the most relevant. We’ve had some sparring sessions at our gym that have gone sideways because of the first time/novice sparring partners have little control and don’t know how to pull their punches. This is especially troubling when the novice sparring partner is larger and can strike with more force. As the video suggests, it’s best to work with an experienced sparring partner (or even your trainer, if they’re up for it or able) that can help you get comfortable in the ring (breathing, movement, rhythm, etc) and work with you to improve your boxing skills. Thanks for sharing this, Tony!
Sparring is superrrrrr fun. Me and the buddies love practicing and talking on what we can work on collectively. We and our coaches always agree on what we should work on in that session whether is work up close or distance and etc. There is absolutely no ill intention because we gotta take care of each other which a lot of egotistical kids dont get that sparring is to better both of us so we both come out as winners. Every boxer should spar or light spar its extremely essential in my opinion.
Even after 50 fights (especially as i got older) i HATED sparring - was always hard to broach wether to give to much or not enough..without looking soft or like a bully
I domt want to spar but like the idea of aggressive mit holding some how. Granpa said can end up punch drunk and he said guys would almost kill each other. Granpa was asked he said no thanks. Still could move easily in his 80s, suprised the hell out of me.

Hey Tony!! I've got a bit of a sparring dilemma but first let me say I've really been enjoying your videos man! Thanks for putting so much good content out there. I'm 48 and I've been training for 6 years. Got into it just to get fit and feel in love with the art of boxing, now the only way to get better at that art is to do sparring, but I'm running into an internal conflict. In my professional life, I'm a trauma therapist - I help people heal from trauma, and I'm finding myself, in the little bit of sparring I've done, not able to fully commit out of fear of causing harm. I'm not too worried about getting hurt myself - I'm a 245 pound heavyweight with pretty good technique at this point - but I can feel how there's an internal switch I'm not letting myself flip because I have a sense that if I do, I could accidentally end up hurting someone pretty badly. Just curious if you have any thoughts on this.
Hello, good morning sir. I myself am a physician, and I had some problems trying to hurt another person, having helped many before. However, one thing that kept me going was that I am a man, and that I need to be able to protect myself and my family. Either physically, emotionally, or financially. And thus I need to get stronger, which was the reason I went into boxing in the first place. And for the opponent, he's also a guy (I won't fight women), and he also needs to protect himself and his family. And thus, like a lion with his cub, I let go of my fear and I went ahead to spar. Hope that helps.
The more experienced guys will help you. Even when you're tired, they'll still lightly work you and encourage you to keep going. They won't try and take your head off. I sparred the first time a month ago and got tired 30 seconds in, it's no joke. I did 3 months boxing fitness training before hand but when you have punches thrown back and not breathing properly it takes the wind outta you.
man, i cannot emphasize just how true the "pace yourself" tip rings true... i started out doing boxing mostly for weight loss (and it helped tremendously), but eventually began entertaining the idea of someday, maybe in a couple of years, having a couple of amateur fights, mostly just to say i did it- but also because i genuinely have fallen in love with the sport. after several months, i worked my stamina up to being able to do 12 x 3 min rounds (that's coming from barely being able to complete 30-45 secs on mitts at first), but boy oh boy was my lack of conditioning ever exposed when i hopped in the ring a few times to help some other boxers practice their defence- wasn't even a proper "spar", as they weren't hitting me... but still, moving around at fight pace is so much different to working the heavy bag. i still don't discount my ability to do 12 rounds on the bag since many folks couldn't even do that, but that's a walk in the park compared to when you're in the ring with someone even just throwing 30% and not going full speed. moving around with another person, constantly trying to catch them, thinking of your defence/attack strategy, consciously working on breathing, etc. are a whole different ballgame. but circling back to pacing yourself... just as tony says, if you go 100% right off the bat, you'll be ready to tap out just 30-40 seconds in... the pace is absolutely central, and i'd argue most important on the list. thanks for the awesome content as per usual!
Good point for experienced partner. The alternative for me would be choose someone you already know and agree to some light sparring, maybe even agree to slow down your punches. That way you can get used to being hit, and used to dodging actual punches, without getting hurt/being put off.
@@Tony_Jeffries I’m 14 years old and I’m 62 kg.. been doing almost a year of kickboxing and I love your videos they really help me a lot! Love your videos !
I just started boxing with a mate today for a joke but I actually really like it. I am watching a lot of your videos and I am really enjoying them and hopefully they help. Do you have any small tips that are really important and would help me. Also I love the video and all of your others. Keep it up 👍
Came out to California to go to work ... and actually found a gym out this way , I messed with boxing when I was younger and finally now got actual training .. combining that and these videos I’m slowly improving ... appreciate all these videos brotha
This video is so invaluable to me right now. First time full sparring other night I gassed out after one minute everyone was bashing me about silly 😂 Need to relax ,breathe and just remember the basics instead of trying to throw every punch!!
All these tips are more than just tips, these tips will save you getting seriously hurt. The one that stands out to me and what a lot of new fighters do, is they roll or dodge punches and they turn away or there focus isnt on the other fighter. Always keep them eyes locked onto them and their gloves so you know when somethings coming.
Point #3 was spot on. I would rather spar a pro or Olympic medalist like yourself than a novice or a less experienced fighter. They throw some awkward punches and usually they are amped and go all out. A good sparring session is when you take a good shot and acknowledge your opponent then try to return fire at a controlled pace. 🥊👍🇺🇸🇬🇧
Had my first sparing for the first time yesterday against a 16 years old (I'm 37) ...he's been doing it for years, quick and strong. Lol I got hit in the face for the first time yesterday and I was like wtf. I need to overcome the fear of getting hit...guess it will come with time and experience. I already looking forward to the next sparring so I guess I should be happy about my first sparing
Respect for boxing at 37, you are a legend bro, about getting punched accept that, and dont try to give back immediately, you are older, so you gotta be smarter than him, he is 16 so it is not hard for you.Good luck
They way I see nerves is like this. Basically it is a release of adrenaline pumping around your body, so it up to you in your mind wether you determine that to be nervous, fear or excitement all those emotions are triggered by the same thing a rush of adrenaline. So simply decided in your mind It is always excitement have a go it's Changed my life 👊👍 stay sharp
Youre true, yesterday was my first time getting bleeding on nose but i didnt feel it before, when i swipe my nose i saw blood then the mindset changed to cover it, its getting worse because i was not focusing my eyes into opponent. Thanks for the tips
when I spar I'm going to do it with my friend who's trained in martial arts for years and is now training in jiu jitsu, he said anytime I could spar with him so he could help also teach me good technique, just like you're doing on this great channel.
You’re great man! This channel needs to blow up. Was talking about you to a random dude at work... word is spreading! I’m guna start boxing again when can, try have a fight before I’m too old, thanks for the inspiration
Thanks mate had my first spar I’m old boy 58 guy I sparred was really good I was tight nervous and a bit fearful didn’t move well this really helps thanks so much tony
Although a bleeding nose is a sign of lack of control, I like it when my nose bleeds. It's a sign that you actually sparred (but do remember to control).

Sparring is to use the things you learned on a bag. Mitt work should be the think you learn the most tbh
Until you step into the ring for a real fight and all that goes out the window with your adrenaline on overdrive
It's crazy how much more exhausting sparring is from regular training.
Mainly from being to tense and not relaxed enough. Comes with experience though.
Sparring is 70% of training :)

man, i cannot emphasize just how true the "pace yourself" tip rings true... i started out doing boxing mostly for weight loss (and it helped tremendously), but eventually began entertaining the idea of someday, maybe in a couple of years, having a couple of amateur fights, mostly just to say i did it- but also because i genuinely have fallen in love with the sport. after several months, i worked my stamina up to being able to do 12 x 3 min rounds (that's coming from barely being able to complete 30-45 secs on mitts at first), but boy oh boy was my lack of conditioning ever exposed when i hopped in the ring a few times to help some other boxers practice their defence- wasn't even a proper "spar", as they weren't hitting me... but still, moving around at fight pace is so much different to working the heavy bag. i still don't discount my ability to do 12 rounds on the bag since many folks couldn't even do that, but that's a walk in the park compared to when you're in the ring with someone even just throwing 30% and not going full speed. moving around with another person, constantly trying to catch them, thinking of your defence/attack strategy, consciously working on breathing, etc. are a whole different ballgame. but circling back to pacing yourself... just as tony says, if you go 100% right off the bat, you'll be ready to tap out just 30-40 seconds in... the pace is absolutely central, and i'd argue most important on the list. thanks for the awesome content as per usual!
Thanks for this mate
And good luck with it all
sparred for the first time today...now im here haha, thanks for the video
I thought I was the only one! I get more nerves for sparring than I do for competition!
Your channel is the best boxing channel at TH-cam! I really learned so much. Greets from Germany
Thank you so much I'm a kid and going boxing thanks!.
Thanks Tony! Great advice as always!
Good point for experienced partner. The alternative for me would be choose someone you already know and agree to some light sparring, maybe even agree to slow down your punches. That way you can get used to being hit, and used to dodging actual punches, without getting hurt/being put off.
Thank you very much amazing information
You do light or heavy sparring mate?
@@Tony_Jeffries I’m 14 years old and I’m 62 kg.. been doing almost a year of kickboxing and I love your videos they really help me a lot! Love your videos !
Thanks brother
Happy to help mate
An amazing help Tony. Thank you.
Thanks for the great advice on this channel brother! You're a true champion. God bless you. Theuns from South Africa
Thank you Dustin, means a lot.

This video is so invaluable to me right now. First time full sparring other night I gassed out after one minute everyone was bashing me about silly 😂
Need to relax ,breathe and just remember the basics instead of trying to throw every punch!!
Thank you. U make really interesting content which helps me with training. Keep going 🙂
Your channel is awesome, Tony. Wish you opened a boxing gym near me. Keep teaching us how to poonch!
We video the sparring, it´s a good resource to go on and do slowmo to understand where we´re failing! good video mate, saludos desde Mexico!
So grateful that boxing was a part of my military school curriculum. 🙏🏾
It’s easier once you accept you’re gonna get hit, just keep your jaw clinched and breathe out the nose
Top man 👍 thanks for the advice and reassurance
Any time Dan,
So much value in this video
Youre true, yesterday was my first time getting bleeding on nose but i didnt feel it before, when i swipe my nose i saw blood then the mindset changed to cover it, its getting worse because i was not focusing my eyes into opponent. Thanks for the tips
I hope my opponents don't watch your videos cause they are so damn good💯😂

Your videos revolutionize my training! Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge, it helps massively. And please keep making videos!

This guy is full of so much wisdom and I’m grateful for it 🙏🏼
i do boxing thanks for the tips have a good day!:3
Although a bleeding nose is a sign of lack of control, I like it when my nose bleeds. It's a sign that you actually sparred (but do remember to control).
Love this mate! Excellent ❤
Mannnn this video is probably the video I needed I had my first sparring session and i was doing such bad things in terms of turning away from my opponent
Happy to help Ausem, keep it up!
Thanks so much for everything! Had my first light spar today! Was a blast. Round 3/3 tho was gassed.. much to work on :)
