  • A man who decided to make the worst decision of his life and end it on his own along the side of a quiet road, far enough to get the job done but close enough to be found.

    Wow! Thanks for this. I have lived in Cresson most of my life and never heard this information. Over the years, anyone I asked either didn’t know the story or told me something that they “heard” about whose grave is there. Many years ago, I was visiting the Lemon House, and I asked the park ranger if he knew anything about that grave. What he told me was that the man buried there was a transient worker, and he died while working on the road. Finally, I know!
    And thanks to the young man who cared enough to replace the marker.
    I love your vids. Keep up the fantastic work!

      It is a great feeling to know the story and know the truth. Sad that the range felt to give bad information as opposed to just saying, "I don't know". Which is a common theme with many (not all) park rangers and local historians.

    As a child in the 1970’s I remember seeing the white cross on the side of the road. My father told me it was the grave of an unidentified man who had hung himself in a nearby tree. I recently asked him where exactly that grave was located and after searching, I stumbled upon this video. He said it’s been a mystery since he was a young boy. Glad this poor soul’s resting place is being taken care of.

    The echo showing up on radar is from the wind farm. The white blades reflect the radiation back to the radar and it shows up as precipitation.

      Got together with a local "photog" who has been walking the Inclines a LOT for the past few months... he begged me to come out, so I caved :D He actually got me in contact with Joel, the caretaker, and it turned into a much more compassionate episode.

      It is on my list. If you watch my much earlier videos, I do a lot about the old trail starting down at Burnt Cabins and working our way up... touching on the river/creek/ridge/mountain/road/benches/parks/et.al. with the name of "Jack". The idea was to actually do the story on him and the ghost lights. Unfortunately, health got in the way. I need to figure out how to flush out that story with less hiking into the ridges of the mountains.

    I enjoy your videos and dedication to bringing us all on these adventures of local history! I'm glad I stumbled upon this one. I pass this area alot and my grandfather always told me stories of it, but never really knew much more. He always said the gentleman who passed here was a soldier who returned home and found his wife with another. How true that was I never knew, but he was a knowledgeable man so I took everything he told me to heart. Look forward to more videos!

    Thank you Scott for information on that site. I have been by there more times than I can count and was first by there as memory serves, when I was very young [about 7 or 8 or so] when my parents and I were on our way to Altoona, when they commented on it as we passed by. They said only "hey look, there is an unmarked grave" as we continued on by, but never really knew anything more about it until now. Thank you ! I miss my Pa. home !

      Thanks a ton! It really does take a lot of time. I originally thought it would be a cake walk to just go out, take pictures, make speculation and have a 10 minute video made in 20 minutes... but no, I had to take the hard way and do the 20 hours of research before the explores. BUT... it makes for great history recordings.

    • @ODDySEEy
      @ODDySEEy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The original sign said the same exact thing as the current sign. The only difference is that it was in the shape of a Route Sign (a shield) and white. There was also a white cross, which is what the flags were attached to on memorial day.

    Fascinating story. Kess Racks? Could the writer have possibly meant McKees Rocks, an area just north of Pittsburgh, entirely possible if the handwriting was poor or written by someone who's first language was not English. A quick search of Google Maps reveals there does exist an Alpha NJ, just over the state line from Easton, PA. Maybe this gentleman was foreign, especially with the names written inside his wallet, maybe a search on ancenstry.com could lead somewhere? It's really nice that someone takes the time to tend this man's grave. RIP.

    This reminds me of the tombstone next to the road just past poe valley state park. My father told me when I was a child, that allegedly the man had a tree fall on him. He was able to free himself from the predicament, and the stone marks where he succumbed after dragging himself back to the road. It reads "Harry E Kern died here, December 1, 1926. Member of the Catawissa Rod and Gun Club, Catawissa, PA.

      That is an interesting, but sad, story. When I went to PSU we had a fellow student walking along the sidewalk of campus when a tree branch fell and took her away. It is always a hard blow with those completely randomized deaths caused by freak accidents.

    What they did to the Native people was just out right wrong ! That principal must of been a vile evil of a man.

    • @ODDySEEy
      @ODDySEEy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure the motive of that man, yet. But, what I can say is all that you think was wrongly done to the Natives was equally done by the Natives (initially). There are always two sides to stories. Many of my researched stories dig deep into the fact that the Natives initially were hostile and vile people when it came to local farmer settlers. Even when I talk with modern Chiefs of today, they say to me that "all man have sins against all man" and that only the person who remembers what we did can make a world where we no longer see a different race.
