All due respect to Michelle Pfeiffer, Anne Hathaway, and all the others who played Catwoman. But Julie Newmar was the first to portray the feline femme fatale on film, and they couldn’t have done what they did with the role, if it weren’t for her.

This is good content honestly looking back on this show yeah it's campy but example here the lighting is great and has a genuine somber tone almost like a spy show

Campy is all good to me. Pretty much all those classic 60's/70's shows were and we all loved every minute. They don't make them like they used to. Great time to be alive as a kid growing up.

William Dozier (the producer of Batman) actually wanted Suzanne Pleshette to be cast as Catwoman. Apparently, they couldn't agree on a contract/salary so Julie Newmar was cast instead. Miss Newmar said she was called to portray Catwoman on a Friday and flew from NYC to LA to start filming on Monday

Michelle Pfeiffer for me will always be my Catwoman as far as big screen portrayals are concerned but when it comes to iconic villains from the 60s Batman TV show, Julie Newmar will always be the benchmark for all Catwomen especially as she was the first live action portrayal. She was delicously sexy and perfectly evil who you got the impression that she almost enjoyed playing around with Batman for her own personal amusement and had the sassy attitude to match her good looks. I like all the various actresses that played Catwoman . What I liked about this character, she is aways shown as being highly intelligent, very articulate, calculated, highly driven and ruthless when required but not ruthless for the sake of being ruthless. Although the character is a villain, she was very much an anti-villian. But in the end her need to succeed at all costs she lost control of her ambition. The Catwoman character in the Batman series did not hold back that a woman CAN be highly attractive and sexually And be highly intelligent. During this Era, there was an increase in female characters that were very attractive and highly intelligent. These female characters ranged on the levels of how overtly sexual they were . Agent 99 from Get Smarts was more reserved, which makes sense for the show and what the basic plot was. But it still showed that women can have sex appeal AND be highly intelligent. Most of the shows during that Era that were comedy and although being campy , really showcase this type of woman. It did challenge female characters and social normal at the time. Without depicting them as feminists and all the unfortunate negative views of which are attached to that type of stereotype. Because the producers did not go down that road, it reached a larger platform to show that woman can be both attractive and intelligent. The women who had roles albeit in campy shows actually had, I believe, a greater positive impact in changing how woman were view, then shows that had main female characters that were strong feminists. Because it was subtle, it was more easier to see these women and respect them instead of closing off and dividing their audience or worse alienating their audience. I have noticed that today there are too many TV and movies that either over complicate female roles or don't show woman that are intelligent and can also be attractive. Obviously, not all shows follow this model for female characters but many shows do. Sometimes the true trail blazers are subtle and may not be feminists but other women we at first glance don't realize what positive role models they actually are.
