  • Hello!
    This is what I really call big water level drop. Built on a drainage channel, this dam was high and kept decent amount of water. Also tried to film ir from different angles. Let me know what you think about it. Thank you!
    Enjoy :)

    When I was a kid in the Pacific NW we used swim in beaver ponds. With cute little beavers and babies in huge natural areas. This was in the mid 60s. The same and houses were really cool for a bunch of kids.
    They weren't damming water ways. Some of these dams were huge. A few were 75 years or older. With a lot of beaver houses.
    Sadly there all gone. My favorite one is all golf course now.

    That's one way to get rid of stagnant water! In the Rockies (mountains in western USA), beaver ponds in high elevations make for great trout fishing. Of course, they aren't by farms or 'civilized' areas and are, hopefully, still providing good habitats for migrating birds, deer, and other wildlife. Good, thorough job here---and I love it that your son took a hand in the video, lol

    Not sure where this was filmed, but in Canada it's illegal to remove a beaver dam unless it's compromising a roadway, culvert or bridge.... Always start from the top and work your way down, alot easier.

    • @giedriustuma
      @giedriustuma  ปีที่แล้ว

      This was filmed in Lithuania. And it’s legal to remove the beaver dams because of the reasons you mentioned, also any dam which is built on reclamation channel, as in this case.

    Depth of cut more important than width of breach

    • @peggyjean5530
      @peggyjean5530 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Width of breach is as important as depth because it will take the beavers a longer time to rebuild. If you only open a small space the beavers can have it plugged fairly quickly.

    • @rustyiron
      @rustyiron 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@peggyjean5530 The time to remove a repair is proportional to the length of time it took to make the repair.
      My advocating a deep narrow breach is based on experience on similar drainage systems and managing beaver habitat while preventing flooding of property and damage to infrastructure by beavers.
      The definition of width depends on the dam and who is breaching it.
      Judging from the size of the canal and dam construction a breach over 40 cm wide is not needed.
      The advantage of a narrow breach is that you can learn, perhaps over night, if the pond is occupied.
      If it is not repaired you saved yourself a lot of work by not making a wide breach or removing the whole dam.
      In SOME cases when a dam is frequently opened the beaver abandon the pond.
      These canals are part of a field drainage system, a narrow deep breach is easily kept open and the depth of water in the canal low.
      The lower the water level the harder it is for the beaver to rebuild or repair the breach.
      Beaver dams are generally not built that high to start with.
      Beavers make dams higher and longer because of water running over or around their dams.
      Ponds that have had 'overflow' culverts installed are SELDOM built higher.
      There is a lack of maintance on some of the canal systems, the bushes and trees along the banks are material for beaver to build dams with.
