Well it's clearly written with Chester's voice in mind. They are tonally completely different, so it makes sense from a songwriting perspective. I've written songs for other people to sing and of course the demo sounds vocally weird until the actual singer puts down the vocals. Simple as that.

So.. what I mean to say is to appreciate not only the work, but also realize that whatever you are working on right now and maybe uncertain about just remember: This is here is how one of Linkin Park's most successful songs sounded like after Mike already spent a lot of time creating it. What made the song great was two things: Dedication and team-work but the invisible factor is the process behind it. It takes time, effort and persistence! So keep going! Whatever you do! Nothing great has ever been built in just one day and even if you found an example I'm going to tell you it took a lot of training and effort to get to the point where you can build something great in just one day. Nossa ...essas músicas estão me fazendo chorar...
It's the whole thing of "I'm not sure if my voice is prepared for this" combined with "this isn't even the final product but I still need some framework for the vocals"... I feel that; more-so on the first part but I still feel that. I really found myself in Mike's shoes listening to this.
What is really precious in that record is that it allows to track down the full history of creating Breaking The Habit. Lots of years before LP released the instrumental demo of the song, the demo was called Drawing (released on one of LPU discs), and the initial version of Breaking The Habit was, suprisingly, a pure breakbeat, even breakcore track, that resembled more of Aphex Twin rather than Linkin Park. Original demo was overloaded with breaks, glitches, noises etc., and it worked great as an electronic instrumental track, but there was no room for the vocals in the arrangement. In this demo (that one - with Mike's demo vocals) we can already hear as the guys partially disassembled the "Drawing" demo, removing most of the complex synthy, breaky, glitchy parts, to give some space for the vocals, but in the breakdown we're still hearing the original breakbeat drums. And in the final version all of the breaks that were left from the Drawing and that are present in this demo were just pushed back in the mix, working along with the groove, without stealing all the attention of the listener. But what bothers me the most is that - in an interview to Kerrang magazine, dedicated to the release of Meteora, Chester told that Mike came with all the lyrics, and Chester referred to them as "something I always wanted to write, but I never could". So in that interview (and couple of more of that era) Chester referred to Breaking The Habit as to Mike's song, written about the dark stuff Chester told him about himself and about the way Chester felt. But in here - in Mike's demo - we hear completely different lyrics. Yes, there are some lines, that made it to the final version (like "...memories consume..." or "I don't know what's worth fighting for..."), but they are placed in completely different places and they work in here in a completely different context. As the result it turns out, that... As for me - it seems like Mike was writing a song about overcoming the darkness inside. But when Chester came in to the process - he obviously reworked the lyrics, that received a completely different context. Like... while original Mike's demo was about overcoming, the final version of Breaking The Habit became a song about writing a suicide note (literally). And seems like Chester did not wanted to tell the audience and even to the band, to his mates, his friends, about what Breaking The Habit in fact meant for him, that's why he always told that he didn't do anything to the lyrics, that all the lyrics were done by Mike. So, looking to the sequence "Drawing - Mike's vocal demo - Breaking The Habit", it turns out for me, that... that in late 90s early 2000s Chester was already to put an end to all of it, and to... you know what I mean - but managed to cope with it and to hide it from the others. But in some moment he couldn't coupe with it anymore. You know what I mean. I don't want to speak it out loud. So in that context, Breaking The Habit itself feels like Chester's desperate call for help, rather than just a great song. And that makes Breaking The Habit much more emotionally loaded than it was interpeted in 2003-2004. Conclusion: Talinda was right - depression doesn't have a face or a mood. And someone's suicidal thoughts can wave around a person for years, and even the closest ones may be unaware of it. So the conclusion is - take care of each others. Take care for real. Depression is a much more dangerous thing than we can expect. And if you feel something resembling to suicidal thoughts, when you feel that there's something wrong inside of you, inside of your mind, your soul - share it with people near to you, don't hide it. Do not hide it, even if you think you're strong enough to overcome depression - yes, you may be strong, but depression is a thing that always can outsmart you, and strike back right when you expect the least. Don't hide your feelings and take care of each other. Peace.
"Original demo was overloaded with breaks, glitches, noises etc." - It always sounded to me that Mike was just freestyling with a bunch of effects on the Drawing demo near the end. Probably with a Kaoss Pad or something.
"As for me - it seems like Mike was writing a song about overcoming the darkness inside" - Also I'm pretty sure that Mike wrote the song about his one friends who had a drug addiction, way before he met Chester. Can't remember which interview it was.
@@theremnants6655 Mike talked about BTH lyrics in Zach Sang's interview (Amazon Music interview). I remember him talking about how he was abandon by one of his friends out of the blue.
Some parts of this are so sick. The additional sound effect in the chorus is really intruiging, and the drums in the end (like in the Drawing demo) start to get complex to the point of collapse. Also, I think this song can be considered drum n bass, as crazy as that may sound.
I love this Demo because it shows you don't have to be a great singer to be a great songwriter. Obviously Mike is way improved now and really knows how to use his voice, but it's so cool to hear the instruments and the melody, and the way Mike structured it, and how putting those things into Chester's hands created absolute magic.
The fun thing about this video is that although the genius of this music is already here, we realize that the spark brought by an iconic voice transforms it in an explosion of emotions.
So many demo's by every band in existence where the singer is just recording an idea and not trying that would sound like this that we will never hear ❤❤
What I love is how we are all let in here and there to see how things come together. You get a really different feel for the song in this version. I would love to be a fly on the wall to see how everything is coming.
So, I heard that Mike was writing this song for years, but the lyrics differ so much from the final version. I guess it makes more sense now what Chester said about it reminding him of his alcoholism(cleaning broken glass).
Thank you, LP, thank you, Mike for sharing it. It`s so priceless to realise that you are allowing us to be a part of the process of creating songs that we all listen and love now. YOu are very brave and strong.
Aw this is not supposed to be released this is just an idea for the actual track hate that people won’t get that Mike is extremely talented and he wrote this to be sang by Chester this is a prototype.

Here you can see the fake fans, of course this is just a demo, it isn't mixed, edited or anything and mike is great at singing, you have thousands of proofs like invisible from one more light or no roads left from minutes to midnight, he's not just the "rapper".
Yeah he's clearly trying to sing like Chester in it as a reference point. He doesn't sing like this normally in the proper released stuff. 'Sorry For Now' is a good example.

So cool to hear the demo versus the final product! So glad they pushed through and trusted the process to put out one of my favorite LP songs 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
more demo pls, this is so interesting to listen 🥺
There are more demos of songs like somewhere i belong and others on their channel
Mike said this song was about leaving a toxic relationship. Chester added and altered the lyrics to be more personal about addiction
Obviously Mike is way improved now and really knows how to use his voice, but it's so cool to hear the instruments and the melody, and the way Mike structured it, and how putting those things into Chester's hands created absolute magic.
takes a lot of guts to release this :D respect and much lovego berserk
The fun thing about this video is that although the genius of this music is already here, we realize that the spark brought by an iconic voice transforms it in an explosion of emotions.
Where it all started for what blossomed into one of the best songs of all time!
I cried listen to this!!! Mike is a GENIUS!!
Now I can't stop thinking that Chester heard lot of LP songs this way 🤣🤣
So many demo's by every band in existence where the singer is just recording an idea and not trying that would sound like this that we will never hear ❤❤
The mastermind of my favorite song. Thank you so much mike for sharing how music is created ❤
Vdd
Just so everyone knows, this was Mike basically figuring out the melody of the song, the melody of the verses and chorus
The fact Mike wrote the song for Chester and finally listening to him singing it just tears my heart 💔💔
Thank you, LP, thank you, Mike for sharing it. It`s so priceless to realise that you are allowing us to be a part of the process of creating songs that we all listen and love now. YOu are very brave and strong.
Mike you're a legend 🙌 👏 ❤️ xx
Sometimes you just have to sing. Love you Mike
I love how RAW this is
Mike is Awesome!!! R.I.P Chester..
Aw this is not supposed to be released this is just an idea for the actual track hate that people won’t get that Mike is extremely talented and he wrote this to be sang by Chester this is a prototype.
Amazing Mike
OMG!!!!! Me encanto!!!!
Gonna tell my kids Mike's version of breaking the habit was the only version that lp dropped
Don't do that😂
You monster! 🤣
i got you nephews
slipped into the wrong timeline
Just stare him dead in the face and tell him this is what helped cope with my mental illness
Really interesting to hear what this could have been and how the lyrics have changed
Mike voice is cute in this song 😊
Just a demo and i love mike in it
I now understand why the song ends the way it does. This version makes the intent more overt. It's supposed to 'break' apart.
I guess, Mike wrote this song for Chester. These highs need some skills in singing))
I want to thank guys who are doing this - sharing with us their music.
I Love your work Shinoda
It's interesting to see how the lyrics were changed from the demos
Won't go into my listening rotation, but cool to get that insight into the process. Also puts into perspective how good Chester is
Mike ❤ why is this so amazing ! This is so crazy good ? This hits me different in the feels !
You guys are leyends
Here you can see the fake fans, of course this is just a demo, it isn't mixed, edited or anything and mike is great at singing, you have thousands of proofs like invisible from one more light or no roads left from minutes to midnight, he's not just the "rapper".
"No Roads left", really strong Mike vocals
No Roads Left is entirely auto tuned lol
@@MrDwightSchrute yeah that is applied most likely, but it still displays strong vocals
Yeah he's clearly trying to sing like Chester in it as a reference point. He doesn't sing like this normally in the proper released stuff. 'Sorry For Now' is a good example.
@@MrDwightSchrute not even close
So raw, love it!
I want to hear more of Mike singing to be honest
If you're looking for a list, some of my favourite songs Mike sings on are:
Burning In The Skies [LP]
So Far Away - 1998 [LP]
Roads Untraveled [LP]
P5hng Me A*wy - Live In Texas (the reverse psychology's failing miserably part) [LP]
fine [Mike Solo]
Waiting for the End [LP]
Sorry for Now [LP]
No Roads Left [LP]
Post Traumatic [Mike Solo Album]
Iridescent [LP]
@@SylvereNazaire Yeah I would agree with that list. 'Sorry for Now', 'Iridescent', 'So Far Away' and 'No Roads Left' are the best
@@SylvereNazaire I would also add 'Invisible' 'Looking for an answer' 'Blackout' 'Place to start' 'In my head'
No Roads Left is his best one!
The outro of Blackout also have a great vibes.
In between, Hands held high, Debris (The chorus), Robot Boy, Jornada del muerto
So this is the song mike made for Chester, i am not criying is the ninja cuting onions 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Honestly got a good laugh out of this 😂. I love the song overall, Mike did a great job just getting the rough outline seeing as this demo was made before chester even joined and the fact Mike had everything pretty well planned is astonishing. R.i.p chester, we will never forget you! ❤
Ahh yes, the REAL Breaking The Habit!
this sounds so beautiful

Im looking for this comment😂, thank you❤
awesome ❤ great peace of history
The voice It so soft and sweet Mike good job ❤
Tbh, Mike sounds like Chester from 0:42
it's where baritone (mike) and high tenor (chester) vocal ranges overlap
OMFG FIRST VIEW ON A LINKIN PARK VIDEO! MY LIFE IS COMPLETE
SO ITS MINE :D
This is how I felt when I caught Mike Shinoda's water bottle at the end of a Linkin Park show lol
Finally they added this masterpiece to TH-cam
This proves how important the producer and audio engineer are.
Still, you can tell.
