I thought petunias were going to be tough to grow but they did absolutely beautiful! I put my in my raised beds just for color and in my greenstalks, they were beautiful in my greenstalks. Gonna do again! Good luck on the season!!
The dollartree seeds are from Ferry Morse company sold in the big box stores. I did the math comparison and they are 1/2 the cost for same amount as ferry Morse seeds. Hope that helps.
Thank you so much for introducing me to freeheirloom seeds. I donated a lil more than their asking and it was totally worth it. The 15 seeds packets came with instructions for each one which is great for a first time seed starter.
You can use your cinnamon basil as part of a flower arrangement. It smells so good! I had a giant one that grew outside my old garden's fence, and wow! Every time you would pass by it, the most fragrant smell would permeate the air. So, I started cutting it and using it my floral arrangements. And I loved growing strawberry watermelon! I had them growing everywhere...gave some to neighbors, family, it was a crazy good producer!
Wow! Fantastic seed haul. I’ve grown Cherokee carbon tomatoes. They are beautiful & very productive slicer tomatoes. I’ve also grown listadade grandia eggplant, I gotta say I’m not a big fan. They’re a bit too seedy for me. I prefer ping tung which is a long Japanese variety. Very productive, tasty & not as much seeds as listadade. I look forward to seeing how your garden grows this season.🌱😊
This is a great start. I may try the spreadsheet as I was going to write out all of my seeds, sowing info and dates by hands. My only concern is that zone 8a GA isn’t the same as zone 8a WA. But maybe being able to put in last frost date would help to be more accurate than simply knowing your zone. I guess we’ll see. Fingers crossed. Thanks for sharing your video. You’re appreciated.
I purchased the calendar but I’m unable to edit on excel. I should’ve asked before I purchased but are we able to edit on sheets ? Unfortunately, I’m not signing up for a monthly subscription to excel when I have Sheets and Numbers available to me for free. I’m bummed out at this time 😢. I’ve spent 2 hours fiddling. I can open it on Sheets and Numbers but the cells aren’t showing up in the seed start and planting schedule sections. I’m sure you’re busy, but would you be able to trouble shoot or does any viewer reading this know how to help? Thanks.
We are in East Tennessee zone 7b. The Cherokee Carbon performs very well for us and has great flavor. . Even in the heat, rain and wind. Others that do well for us are Pineapple, Hillbilly, and Thornburn's Terra Cotta. The best cherry tomato here is the SunGold. Every cherry tomato that we have grown here seems to grow well but, the flavor of SunGold is so good..
My first year garden I grew only dollar tree seeds and I had good success then. Next two years I tried petunias and only had one germinate. It was disappointing. The zinnias and marigolds grew fine. sell the same seeds every year unfortunately.
Johnny's is more of a market farmer supplier, with feet in both commercial and retail, so they are geared towards bulk orders. The high cost seeds you have are probably PVP or patented seed and they cost more for seed companies to sell or carry.
I highly recommend MI Gardener. They charge only $1.99 per packet and shipping is free after spending only $20. Their customer service is AMAZING! I get buying hybrids from Johnny’s, but several of the seeds you mentioned in your Johnny’s haul could have been bought at MI Gardener for only $1.99, and at least twice a year, they sell for only $1. There germination rate has also been very high for me.
Great seed haul! Anaheim peppers are actually very versatile. We roast them and use in salsa a lot. Can't go wrong! It's going to be a fantastic garden ❤
I have Jade, calima, and buerre de roquencourt bush beans this year. I want to do a golden crookneck squash plant surrounded by bush beans. I love listening to you explain the different varieties you're choosing! The Socrates cucumber sounds interesting! I'm also going to plant Cayenne pepper seeds along with ajvarski pepper. I'm overwintering some jalapeño and Jimmy Nardello pepper plants from last year.
@AGardenersJourneyHomestead they were very nice to grow and I enjoyed the sweetness of the ones I got! It was my first time growing peppers from seed last year, so they got to a slow start. I'm hoping to get more pepper production this year.
Let me tell you something about that cube of butter squash! It's my favorite thing to grow EVER. They are beautiful and delicious. Very productive. I got the seeds from Botanical Interests years ago, and they can be hard to find.
I love this video! So I just got my order in the mail from Baker Creek and the 1 thing I am super excited about growing is the Silver Yamato Watermelon. Mrs. H from Homestead Heart talks about how good those watermelons are, so I am planning on trying it out... I CAN'T WAIT!! I've had the red/pink, yellow and the orange watermelons, so I hope this white one is good and sweet.
I enjoyed this video. I have a page of notes. Thank you for all the details of your tried and true varieties, Barbara. I received a delivery of seeds today from the free seed site you shared in one of your previous videos. If anyone was wondering, it is legit. Did you know that American Seed Co. and Ferry-Morse are owned by the same company? I went to grab a bag of soil from my yard yesterday, and it was frozen! I will have to wait a few days more to get some seeds started once things thaw out here.
Love your seed haul! I will have to try Urban Farmer seeds. Territorial it’s the shipping too for me, although I have some items in the cart! I too believe you can never have enough seeds. I’m relatively a new gardener, as this will be my third season, but I have a ton of seeds. My recent Dollar Tree seed haul was 196 packets. There are over 30 seeds in the beefsteak packets. The beans are far less but still a great buy for the price. Your videos are great! I love how down to earth you are. Wishing you continued success….
I love a seed haul! That's crazy about the Baker Creek order. My goto are Baker Creek, Botanical Interests & MI Gardener but I have a small yard. Thanks for reminding me of the Ajvarski pepper, must order. I am VERY interested in the Red Ember. I have never ordered from Johnny's but, like Territorial I was put off by the shipping $. An idea might be a video on profiles on individual cultivers (taste, bounty, growth) 2025 will be our most abundant plentiful harvest yet! 🙏
The secret to getting what you want from MIgardener is to purchase during their yearly seed launch haul, which is usually right after Thanksgiving. If you're on Facebook, they always announce the date on there. They are also considering offering bulk seeds. They are my favorite seed company due to price and high germination rate. I try very hard to NOT purchase from Baker Creek due to poor germination rate several times. I heard thaf they source their seeds worldwide, which might be the reason for the poor germination rate. I've pretty much given up on Baker Creek. I never really understood the attraction.
They also lied about their purple tomato, claiming it was an heirloom-it was actually a gmo. I’m not anti-gmo, but they make that their whole identity. They also invited Cliven Bundy, a white supremacist, to their planting festival in 2017. Just FYI.
Barbara! I loved this video girl! Great haul. Ive not bought seeds from dollar tree, but ill check them out this weekend for sure. I am curious about thise purple hull peas. In a previous video you mentioned how youlike those better than black eyed peas. Or maybe on a comment. Anyway, how do you grow those? I want to do those this summer, but dont know the basics of planting, growing, etc. Guess i need to do some research.
Glad you enjoyed it! Definitely check out Dollar Tree seeds. And for the purple hull peas-you grow beside a trellis -they are vining. I like them better than blackeyes because they have a milder taste.
I bought pelleted onion seeds from Johnny’s. They are not germinating….like at all. Interesting though I had old onion non pelleted seeds from MIGardner and they ALL germinated despite being old. Gonna reach out to Johnny customer service
@ they’re new😂 I started pelleted salanova lettuce and flower seeds from Johnny’s and the lettuce ones sprouted in a day. Flowers will take 2 to 3 weeks. So I think its just those onion seeds 😒
@ 95%. I reposed some in Jiffy seed starting mix to see if that makes a difference. I had used my good potting soil the first time around. It was the Bridger onion. They say those can be overwintered in the north……
FYI, if you make a mistake with a Baker Creek order, just use their "contact us" email form and reference the order in question, and request a cancellation so you can reorder. I had to do that myself and it ended up not being an issue.
Got it! I feel like a member of the secret service, I’m about to get all the inside secrets to growing, prepping and cooking I’m so excited. Thank you so much !!!
No luck with cucumbers. Do you amend your soil differently with cucumbers? Petunias took a long time to get started. Tried it once. But they do come back now in the garden, zone 5 Canada.
@@AGardenersJourneyHomesteadthe cucumbers first of all kept getting attacked by insects and squirrels.
