    It's great Paul isn't it!? I've had gig 1 for about 10 months now. It's amazing, but the main issue is the router not being able to provide those speeds and range. For the meantime, virgin gave me 2 wifi pods for free, but I'm looking for forward to their WiFi 6 router (hub 5) which should be released in 2022

    • @TheTechGiantYouTube
      @TheTechGiantYouTube  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes I mentioned about it not being able to do over 1gig,but like you said,the Hub 5 should be out soon.

      I bought an ASUS Wi-Fi 6 router and ran the hub 4 on modem mode connected to it. Far better than the Virgin hub 4 if you want to maximise your speeds and get far better range.

    • @AsR3DaS
      @AsR3DaS 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The wifi pods are garbage, I was part of the test group for them. Shows as a 5ghz connection but the pod itself only connects to your hub at 2.4ghz so can never get a true speed. Best option is to always use the Hub as a modem with your own better router in place.

    • @mrsweete9065
      @mrsweete9065 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AsR3DaS I had the new WiFi Pod sent to me, I spent 40 minutes to a 2nd line engineer trying everything but we concluded for absolute certain that the pods made things worse, before phoning I even followed the manual of waiting a few days, using on a socket on its own for less interference and positioning about midway but constantly I got less than half the speed than I would if I connected all the way to the superhub.. very odd and I also dislike any of the "smart channel" optimisation, always seems to do more bad than good.

    Our home's connection has been bottlenecking our speeds across two different ISPs. We're on Sky at the minute, and while we get zero packet loss and low pings, we never exceed 25mbps down, and we often get around 5mbps up.
    Virgin is nearly done adding our home to their network though, when I heard they were working on our area I became very excited. When our Sky contract ends, I'm definitely going to consider switching, as I crave faster speeds, and the ability to use a third-party router.
    Thanks for this very informative video!

Now having to decide whether to go with Virgin for tv as well or have Sky Q (or Glass). As someone who's never been with Virgin, the prospect of mixing providers is daunting. Virgin Media have brilliant broadband and phone, the phone has never gone wrong and the broadband has only been an issue a couple of times. Thats the good bit. Customer service is absolute s**t, every time and I do mean every time you talk to them to resolve something, like an upgrade or something they cock up every time. It look 6 months to resolve the last issue. Just changed the wifes phone to O2 from Virgin and they are upgrading the broadband from the 600mbs to the 1000, so we will see how that goes when the new kit turns up on Tuesday.

    • @3rdDwarf
      @3rdDwarf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@billdoodson4232 Yeah, have heard the customer service is really bad. Ended up going all in with the Volt 2 bundle as getting Sky TV and Virgin broadband separately was a lot more expensive. Had some trouble explaining what I wanted over the phone due to language barriers as they're customer service reps seem to be based abroad (order 1 gig package, but they called back a week later informing me that they will do a free upgrade to 1 gig for me from whatever mbps they had put me on 🥴) Getting it hooked up next week (after a 2 week delay), so I'll see how it turns out 😬

      @@3rdDwarf after 1 month how do you find virgin internet. Is it a reliable connection?

    • @3rdDwarf
      @3rdDwarf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@petecod Yes really happy, no issues with the connection and amazing speeds. Can especially tell when downloading games. Used to take hours for updates and downloads; I think the longest I've waited with Virgin was around 20 mins.
      The TV is hard to get used to ie: channels have all moved (movies were 301 now 401, sports were 401 now 501 etc), no scrolling through favourites and no easy way of seeing what's being recorded, but I guess this will all come in time. Saying that I now have all the movies, sports and many other channels I never had before on a great deal 👍
      Overall very impressed with it all.

Also worth mentioning that on the hub 4, the fan is at the bottom so keeping the hub on thick carpet could affect its cooling capability.

    Really wish i could get virgin broadband but they refuse to as it would cost too much to bring the cable to the house. Maybe something i fund in years to come as a few grand and as speeds develop i don't want to be left behind. One time virgin agreed to but once they found out the cost (day before set up) they cancelled it all and almost lost phone number and had no broadband (they also paid out our contract at the time so that was aligned to end as we got connected). The prices virgin offer for full tv and broadband packages are very competitive. With preloading its made me needing these speeds less necessary and i can always download overnight. However with game streaming i would definitely need gigabit. Could test game streaming as a video as through gamepass you can actually stream games. We currently have around 65mbps bt broadband which for most stuff is just enough but that's about it.

    The virgin media engineer who came out to see why my newly installed hub 4 (1gb download) was only getting under 500mb on wi fi. He explained that almost nobody will get 1gb until the hub 5 is fully distributed. He didn't recommend it though as there's loads of teething problems ie drop outs etc. So Virgin are knowingly rolling out contracts that they know they cannot meet terms on. Shoddy.

    • @TheTechGiantYouTube
      @TheTechGiantYouTube  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What speeds are you getting when wired?

    • @Jacklevics
      @Jacklevics 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s not shoddy at all. Speeds aren’t guaranteed through WiFi. That would just be impractical to guarantee. They’re guaranteed through wired.
      If you’re getting black spots then if you ring up you can get up to 3 WIFI pods (WIFI intelligent link) included in your G1 package.
      I’m getting about 500mbps upstairs wireless (just installed a pod that’s improved signals greatly). But Ethernet connection gives me over 1000.
      The terms are minimum speeds are about 546mbps minimum download speed guaranteed to the property and if it drops below that 3 days in a row you’re eligible for auto comp….and can leave without penalty after 30 days if they can’t fix it.

    • @FouTarnished
      @FouTarnished 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm on the hub 4 and getting 944mbps so pretty much a gbps I think that virgin engineer was covering his own back more than likely

    • @Jacklevics
      @Jacklevics 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FouTarnished The Gig1 minimum guaranteed speed is about 565mbps, if I remember right. So you’d be getting well over what you’d be guaranteed at a tiny bit under the gig. Mine is consistently around the 1140 mark.
      Virgin agents use SamKnows Realspeed to run line tests and speed tests to the property, too. So it’s worth us doing that too as we’ll then see our line activity too if something may not be right. Other than that it tests the line speed and the speed to your device simultaneously.
      To be honest though, Virgin aren’t really selling Gig1 at the moment or upgrading due to the huge shortages of Hub 4s.

    I considered the Volt package as my contract with 3 was ending and I have a Virgin hub 4 for my broadband but 02 contracts are for three years and to renew my contract with 3 was for two yet the price for a new phone was very similar per month. That meant another £200 for the same new phone if I switched. A no brainer really.
    350mbps as I have with Virgin is more than enough.
    You do get to the situation where your Internet speed is faster than the equipment you are using like my xbox 1x or my new phone. The problem that really needs sorting is WiFi. Not enough range or strength. It's still the weakest link in Internet usage.
