    Also I’m just so pleased you’re enjoying 4x5! Above all else that’s my hope. I think something you’ve revealed really well is that there is no one “best” camera. Different folks have different needs, and those needs change with time. Glad you enjoyed building the camera of course, but I’m way more excited that you’re loving large format ☺️

    The first time I ever used a 4x5 was in art school during photo 101 in like 2012… I instantly fell in love and then was heartbroken that I could never afford one. I’m so excited that someone has created a 3D printed version and I can’t wait to get my hands on it!!
    I’ve been in a photography ‘artists block’ for quite a few years and this might just be the camera to get me out of that slump.

    I’ve been debating selling my intrepid mk iv to buy a standard camera, because I found I like my Cambo monorail more. Only downside is, it’s heavy as shit. Thinking the lighter monorail style of the standard may be the move.
    Thanks for putting up a review. I’ve been waiting for someone to do one! You killed it and just subscribed to see what you put out in the future. May even have to do my own review in the future.

    This is really cool, and it's simple & lightweight I can appreciate. I have a Toyo 45G monorail camera and I love the thing, but it is a tank. There is a company that makes a camera backpack big enough for it(F.64 Large) but by the time I put the camera in the pack,rails, lens, etc - and the attach the film holder pouches, and my light meter, filters, etc - it is probably 25+ pounds in the backpack which is probably 3 lbs or more by itself. I may have to pick one of these up for when I travel out of state/country - would make it much easier and I have 3d printers. Also, 4x5 is so much fun - so keep shooting it!

    “camera meant for photos vs camera meant fun” is an interesting way of looking at it. i feel like it depends on the context. if you’re recording memories and serious subjects definitely that’s a camera meant for photos but a camera meant for just shooting on a walk is a fun camera. it also depends on what is available to you financially or skill wise.
    tl;dr it is subjective

    • @LBCRPhotography

      @@LBCRPhotography high praise? Just me expressing gratitude for the joy you brought me watching this.
      Re measures - the Toyo VX125 is a field capable technical camera… it’s relatively light weight (for a monorail) and still very rigid, and has every movement geared and measured. Totally overkill for
      - most situations
      - most neuro-typical and cognitively unimpaired photographers (alas I’m not)
      And with prices starting at USD2k before tripod and head, that’s kinda a bit much for a “hey I think I might like to try 4x5” 😂

      Interesting! I like the intrepid cameras. The biggest difference is the focusing. I think the the Standard camera is easier to move around in a studio environment and find focus. The intrepid has that one knob that you have to twist forever just to get focus. The rail system makes it easy to just slide the elements forward or backward to find focus, especially with a moving subject.

      @davidedley2931 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LBCRPhotography yep that's why when I first saw his video that had this camera I looked it up and liked what I had seen. Focussing is a problem with this camera. Makes it nearly unusable for more serious applications. Would've been okay for me, being into LF pinhole photography (no focussing needed ;-)), but it is missing some important features (like back standard tilt, which is much more important than it might look on first glance). Still an interesting camera with some room for improvement.

    So the thing that I always feel the need to point out to people with 3d printed cameras is, you cannot 3d print precise mechanical parts like shutters. That means that all "3d printed cameras", at least that I'm aware of, rely on cannibalizing pieces from existing cameras, and are usually built around lenses from cameras like the Mamiya RB67, which has the shutter mechanism in the lens. These 3d printed cameras are actually 3d printed camera _bodies_. The more popular 3d printed bodies get, the more difficult it's going to be to get lenses for legit RB67 cameras, which sucks if that's your camera system of choice.

      I believe a majority of rail cameras and view cameras use lenses mounted to a front mounting board. These lenses are still being made, and I don't believe it takes away from other camera lenses.
      Can you share an example of this. My Toyo 4x5 field camera uses a Schnider Copal lens.

    @4:00 you don't need a ratchet, just hold the key between your pointer and middle finger and use your thumb to spin it.

    • @LBCRPhotography
      @LBCRPhotography  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s not a ratchet. They’re needle nose pliers. And they were pretty useful during the build.

      @@Broken_Orbital oooooooooooh. Yes that’s true. You don’t need a ratchet! I think that my video is proof enough that you don’t need a ratchet. What I failed to express is that my hands got tired from using my fingers to twist the hex key. The racket would have made it a little faster and would have kept my hands from cramping. Sorry I didn’t understand your original comment.

    This is nothing, a few months ago I printed a 5X7 field camera at home. It wasn't cheap mainly due to the bellows that I bought, but it is a working camera with interchangable lenses. It took two months though as I could only print in my spare time and some parts took nearly 36 hours to print. Enjoy the camera.

    • @LBCRPhotography
      @LBCRPhotography  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hahaha. That’s impressive! I admit, effectively using a 3D printer is a learned skill that I do not possess. Maybe I’ll try again one day.

      You can get a Sinar P used for 389.00 and it has focusing knob. I made the mistake of getting an intrepid 8x10 .. You can't even load the film without knocking the whole camera out of focus

    • @LBCRPhotography
      @LBCRPhotography  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Delphisteve oh yeah! The Sinar P is a Great camera. But it’s an absolute TANK. Super heavy. And you can’t travel with unless you wanna take a huge briefcase everywhere. Considering that the Sinar p and the Standard 4X5 are about the same price. I would say that the Standard is a better option for (me personally and) anyone thinking about getting into Large format photography.
      But based on your comment about intrepid. I’m assuming that you prefer a heavier camera so that it stays in focus while you’re loading the film? I suppose that’s a good point to make. Totally valid.
