  • Feeling lost? I turned 40 recently, and it's got me thinking about the big lessons I learned in my 30s and how they’ve changed my life for the better. My 30s were DEFINITELY my most transformative decade so far. I hope my experiences & what I’ve learned along the way can be helpful to you, especially if you're a creative woman, artist, maker, empath, recovering perfectionist or highly sensitive person.

    💖 ABOUT MALLORY 👩🏻‍🎤
Hi! I'm Mallory Whitfield. I live in New Orleans, Louisiana, and I’m a marketing mentor & small business coach for high-achieving, multi passionate creative weirdos.
I started my first handmade business way back in 2004, and along the way, I taught myself all about digital marketing and how to run a business. I learned marketing the hard way, making a LOT of mistakes along the way. In 2014, I switched to a full-time career in digital marketing. Since then, I've worked with hundreds of artists, creative entrepreneurs, and small businesses, teaching workshops on SEO, e-commerce, blogging, social media & email marketing at events like Craftcation and New Orleans Entrepreneur Week. As Adjunct Professor at Tulane University's School of Professional Advancement, I taught & developed classes on Digital Media Principles & Strategy and Creating Digital Content.

I’m 34? 35? I’ve definitely experienced some of these same things. I’m currently juggling a divorce, a new relationship, my son and my job. It’s a lot!? I’m definitely feeling burnt out. I’ve been finding it interesting though that I’m at a point right now where I can’t/ don’t even want to build any friendships: I’m trying to give myself grace that it’s ok to feel this way

Yes, try to give yourself grace. It IS a lot that you're juggling right now.
I've found that we have different seasons in life -- we can only focus on so much at once, and our priorities at different times may shift and change. And between everything you described it makes a lot of sense that you don't currently have the space to build new friendships on top of all of that. It IS okay to feel that way. 🩷

Thank you for this video. TH-cam randomly recommended it to me. I also turned 40 recently and it's been bit of a crisis because I feel like I'm very far from where I would have liked to be at 40. Seems that I have to check that self compassion book 😅 Otherwise I have learned some similar lessons about boundaries, and that it's actually OK to quit. I'd also add to that: don't make any big life decisions out of desperation. If you desperately need to get out of somewhere, dont execute that by jumping into something that you're not quite sure of either. And even if worrying doesn't always help it's still worth it to count the costs before taking a risk.

Yes, definitely check out Kristin Neff's Self-Compassion!
And this: "don't make any big life decisions out of desperation" -- YES! So true! I've found that when I'm in a negative headspace or just not feeling my best, that my decision making / judgement is not as strong or aligned with my truest needs & desires as when I can center myself and give myself more spaciousness to tap into what I truly need in that moment. Decisions that are rushed or made from desperation often create more trouble for us than waiting a bit in the discomfort to see what new opportunities might arise.

thank you again for making internet a more soft place! well.. what can I say, I spent all my 30s on destructive/stagnant/wrong relationships while I was letting my job eating me, yay! Probably at around 40 I realized that was the exact same pattern that I was perpetrating at work and at relationships. Getting lost in the process, not connecting to my own reality and needs, not respecting myself, not reading the signals. Until i did...
So fast forward to today, I got rid of toxic relationships and dead-end jobs and I moved away from a society that was way too different from what I needed.
That was after spending all my savings in therapy! God bless that money!!

I'm so glad to hear you were able to put those toxic relationships & dead-end jobs behind you. A good therapist is worth their weight in gold, it's so worth it!
